“Well, I’m not the stereotypical knuckle-dragging Security guard type,” Thomas said. “I’m an investigator, I like to look at problems from all angles before I make a decision or a judgment call. I have been since I was a kid. My dad worked in Security’s investigative branch, and he started teaching me cop work pretty much since I could toddle. I questioned so many things as I kid they started calling me ‘Doubting Thomas.’ I started out in CID out of the academy, then after three years got a promotion and an offer to go to space on the old Genny and took it. Then, I accidentally on purpose blew it up, and here we are.”

He spread his arms wide to indicate the space they were in, before taking a sip of his own water.

Magnus took a sip then placed the glass with care on the table. “Don’t sell yourself, short Lieutenant, I read how your actions saved an entire colony and your crew. Not just the one but two Starship crews, That’s plenty impressive.” He stated with a smile “Your father is Conor McGregor right?” He asked not waiting for an answer “That was some name to live up to within CID wasn’t it?”

“Part of the reason I left,” Thomas admitted. “Plenty of people there still remember him, not to mention one of my brothers is a Commander there. Hard to develop your own sense of self if you’re constantly being compared to others.”

“Good thinking, same reason I didn’t join the Marines, grew up with mostly Marines and Chefs visiting, getting into the Academy was a gift from the gods” The Icelander laughed a little “What’s the ship battle readiness status? I know that science vessels often tend to slack a bit on tactical drills.” He asked.

“It’s fair. We haven’t run a full-scale drill on the new ship, but in the last simulation we ran before leaving Black Rock everyone was in position within 90 seconds. That’s just security stations though. For the tactical side, you’ll want to talk to Lt. Park. He’s our tactical officer,” Thomas said.

“Yes we’ve met, talented young man, a little unpolished but I see potential in him.” Magnus said “I suppose since I’m here” He opened his jacket and pulled out a small PaDD and placed it on the Security Chief’s desk “This is my checklist of personal armaments I brought over. A single type two Starfleet Phaser” The file noted it was a twenty-year-old now discontinued model from the 70’s. “A single standard Klingon Disruptor and a Romulan disruptor aswell. I brought my own weapons locker that I keep in my quarters and a small holographic display. I also have a Dominion Plasma Rifle but I had it gutted so it’s just the shell” He smiled slightly “I also have a ceremonial sword, a forged replica of a 9th century what you would call a Viking sword.” The list said as much. “The energy signatures of each weapon, including the Plasma rifle are on there but I only ever use them for fun”

Thomas accepted the PaDD with a simple raised eyebrow. “And what constitutes ‘fun’, Commander?” he asked. That was a serious loadout.

Magnus chuckled “Target practice, blowing up the occasional watermelon in the holodeck. Starfleet weaponry is more like an extremely versatile toolset, Disruptor weapons are created for the simple purpose of killing their targets, barbaric for sure but I find the simplicity interesting. Also, they make fun explosions and if you can’t turn a weapon of horror into a tool of entertainment then what is the point of it all.”

“Hmm,” Thomas mused. “I suppose. If China could take excess artillery pieces and create fireworks, I guess using 24th Century weapons to destroy innocent fruits is a sort of logical progression. Less hands-on than using a giant mallet, but I suppose it’s easier to keep yourself out of the blast radius that way.”

Magnus smiled and nodded at the Security Chiefs reasoning.

He paused to take another sip of his water. “Why the sword though? Cultural connection?”

“Quite so, it’s a replica made by a Klingon Master Swordsmith as a gift to my family. It’s based on a sword that has been in my family for Generations. According to legend, it was given to my ancestor sometime in the tenth century by Knútur the Great a Norse King of Denmark, Norway, and England for some brave deed during the wars at those times. My ancestor was the son of a farmer who was kidnapped into slavery as a young man from the shores of Iceland. When he finally got his freedom and became a Viking he ended up in the English wars, he retired with a wife in a farm in Iceland and died at the respectable age of 62. He was the last soldier in my family for over twelve-hundred years.” Magnus regaled the short version of the story he learned as a child.

“It has had its uses over the years. Sometimes during diplomatic events, they have strict weapon policies. A ceremonial sword is often allowed and some cultures find the act agreeable. Seeing as it’s Klingon Craftsmanship made from alien metals it’s not as brittle as the old Scandinavian steel. It’s a surprisingly competent weapon, I’ve used in a handful of combat encounters, and perhaps a few duels in my day”.

Thomas nodded. “My family has an ancient claymore - the great sword, not the anti-personnel explosive - hanging on a wall in my father’s office. I was never interested in it as anything other than a decorative piece. Honestly, I can’t even remember which Highlander leader it’s supposed to have belonged to,” he offered. “My close-quarters combat skills are more focused on hand-to-hand, but I’m qualified on blades if you want to spar on the holodeck sometime.”

Magnus raised his hands and laughed “No it’s the same for me, I prefer hand-to-hand QCB over melee, but a blade is handy every now and then. But I might take you up on that sparring session, I spent the last two years teaching boots at the Academy how to grapple-toss and throw punches. An adult opponent would be a nice change of pace”
