After a nice talk with The Chief Engineer and a small tour of Main Engineering, perhaps some shenanigans, Magnus made his way to the Security Offices. He was very interested in this meeting as he himself had spent a good while of his career as Security Chief on the Celtic before making First Officer. He straightened out his jacket, chekced his hair and pressed the chime to the office.

“Commander, come in!” Thomas said, exhibiting much more cheer than he did on a daily basis. “Welcome to my converted supply cupboard, since the men who designed this bucket of bolts somehow forgot to include a dedicated security office. This is a hack job we’ve put together since leaving Black Rock.”

OOC: The iron is that I’m slandering myself here…

COS

Magnus smiled as he looked around the small office “Next time we’re drydocked why don’t we have them slap together some real offices for you to work with” He walked in “The Captain asked me to take some time to get to know the Senior Staff, guess you could call this my surprise inspection. Tell me a little about the Security Status on the ship, just generalities.”

Thomas shrugged. “This works well enough, and is at least in the place the designer said the Security offices should be, if he had remembered to include them. I called and asked before we took possession.

“Security-wise, things are OK. Those of us that came from the old Genny are getting used to the new facilities and slightly bigger crew, the newbies are learning all the in-jokes, and so far nobody’s murdered anybody, so that’s always good…

“Sorry, I forgot to ask if you wanted something to drink?”

COS

“Iced water please” Magnus placed his hands behind his back as he continued his assessment of the small room.

Thomas retrieved a pitcher of ice water from the replicator, and two glasses, pouring one for each of them before sliding one across his desk to the XO.

“I suppose this will be an odd Command Staff change for the Genesis, two Former Security Chiefs and Soldiers Commanding a Scientific exploratory vessel” He mused,

Thomas shrugged. “I think it’s a great idea. Plenty of starships on exploratory missions have been lost because the command staff got too excited about a potential new discovery and didn’t exercise a prudent amount of caution. You two are highly unlikely to make that particular mistake, at least.”

“Tell me about yourself Lieutenant, I like to know those I’ll be working with”

“Well, I’m not the stereotypical knuckle-dragging Security guard type,” Thomas said. “I’m an investigator, I like to look at problems from all angles before I make a decision or a judgment call. I have been since I was a kid. My dad worked in Security’s investigative branch, and he started teaching me cop work pretty much since I could toddle. I questioned so many things as I kid they started calling me ‘Doubting Thomas.’ I started out in CID out of the academy, then after three years got a promotion and an offer to go to space on the old Genny and took it. Then, I accidentally on purpose blew it up, and here we are.”

He spread his arms wide to indicate the space they were in, before taking a sip of his own water.

Magnus took a sip then placed the glass with care on the table. “Don’t sell yourself, short Lieutenant, I read how your actions saved an entire colony and your crew. Not just the one but two Starship crews, That’s plenty impressive.” He stated with a smile “Your father is Conor McGregor right?” He asked not waiting for an answer “That was some name to live up to within CID wasn’t it?”

“Part of the reason I left,” Thomas admitted. “Plenty of people there still remember him, not to mention one of my brothers is a Commander there. Hard to develop your own sense of self if you’re constantly being compared to others.”

“Good thinking, same reason I didn’t join the Marines, grew up with mostly Marines and Chefs visiting, getting into the Academy was a gift from the gods” The Icelander laughed a little “What’s the ship battle readiness status? I know that science vessels often tend to slack a bit on tactical drills.” He asked.
