The Kriosian smiled and carefully pulled the needle off a set of dark pink threads she had been using to create an elaborate little round flower with petal layers in a reverse gradient . “That it is.” She laid out the piece, which was encased in a metal frame and turned it so Marishka could see it better. The light grey silk fabric had a scene slowly being created and it looked like the beginnings of some sort of meadow with wildflowers. The background had some blue and green hills that had been outlined but not yet filled in. The colours were vibrant and were built up in layers.

“It’s a very old art form that they used to do in large form, much like a tapestry. Some of them would take years. My mother taught me, though I sort of hated it really. But I found once I hit medical school that it was indeed very good for my fine motor control.”

“Have you played the piano long?” Valleea asked.

Marishka poured from the bottle of Champagne.

“I believe I was six when I started lessons, and eight when I took up the harp. Whatever you’re trying to make certainly looks lovely. It probably helps mentally as well. You know? I guess we all need that one thing.” she said.

“Some more than most,” Valleea muttered before she looked up at Marishka. “Sorry, it’s been a rough patch lately, so yes, I agree that it helps with many things, inculding those in your head. I wish it helped a bit more, but…” She shrugged as she picked up the frame carefully. Setting it in front of her, she rethreaded the strands and gently nestled the needle between a couple sections of the fabric.

Her fingers traced the silky threads already stitched and considered them thoughtfully for a moment. “It’s a memory I have from when I was a child, of a place on my home world my parents once took me to. It’s very pretty,” Valleea said with a soft smile.

“What brought you here tonight?”
