Subject: Annual Physical – Let’s Make It Easy

Commander,

It’s that time again—annual physical. I’d like to get you in tomorrow morning at 0830. We’ll start with the standard baseline scans and work our way through the checklist. Unless you’ve been experimenting with new ways to test inertial dampeners from inside the engine room, it should take no more than twenty minutes.

No lectures, no lectures disguised as friendly conversation—just clear data and a clean bill of health if you’ve earned it.

Let me know if that time works.

Admittedly Dagen had missed this in his mail, buried amongst a myriad of other notices. When he saw it later in the evening he laughed. He had seen more doctors in his, and Thor’s tenure than Commander Edelu would have had opportunity for. He replied back with a touch to confirm the appointment.

And .. at 8:28 Dagen arrived at Sickbay.

Having seen him prior, Dagen had no trouble picking him out from the other staff present, few as there were at the time in the main area. “Doctor,” he said, realizing he could have several heads turn at that intro.

Edelu looked up from the diagnostic console at the sound of his name. One brow rose the faintest degree, but he did not glance toward the other staff—his attention stayed fixed on the officer who had arrived with his characteristic punctuality.

“Commander Thor,” he acknowledged, his voice carrying the steady cadence of ritual. He gestured toward the biobed already prepped with a sterile field and an active diagnostic panel. “Right on time. My colleagues in Starfleet Medical would insist on congratulating you for it. I’ll simply note it makes my morning easier.”

Crossing to retrieve a tricorder from the tray, he keyed it to Thor’s profile with a flick of his thumb. “Shoes off the deck, shoulders square. We’ll start with the baseline scans—nothing dramatic, just confirmation that all the parts you brought in with you are still arranged as expected.”

The words carried no inflection of humor, but there was a quiet gleam in his eyes that suggested he was not entirely without it.

“Consider it a legacy of the good old days when I had batteries of testing at the symbiot commission. Physicals and I were best buds for some years,” he said, hopping up to sit on the edge of the bio bed. He squared the shoulders as best he could; Dagen had a bit of a slouch. “I hope I’m all here,” he said. “I would have a terrible time trying to find anything left behind in my quarters.”

OOC: Baseline would show things in synch. He has put on a bit of weight over his usual logged weight. Any deeper scan would (assuming this was after the last mission) show there was a slight tear in the tissue around his old injury where he had been impaled .. just under the sternum and just over the sac that contained Thor. Records would show that the tissue had been difficult to heal and with the tumbling and falling and such that they did that there had been a tear internally. Not like he was going to fall apart but Dagen likely would have noticed something there not quite right .. Gene

The tricorder hummed softly as Edelu drew it along Dagen Thor’s frame, the display feeding back the familiar tapestry of symbiont and host. The readings settled into synchronicity almost immediately, a reassuringly steady pattern. He allowed his shoulders to ease half a fraction, though his face remained composed.

“Baseline integration intact,” he noted aloud, more for the record than for Dagen’s benefit. “Host and symbiont reading in harmony. Cardiopulmonary function nominal.”

Harmony. Dagen almost laughed to disrupt the scan. Thor was mischievous. Lightly shocking his bladder when he was potentially sleeping in and being late for class. After joining he was never late for class.

A faint line appeared between his brows as he shifted the scan’s depth, sweeping over the abdomen and sternum. There it was: tissue strain around the site of the old injury. Not catastrophic, but not something to ignore either. He keyed a silent marker on the console to flag it for review.

His gaze flicked back up to Dagen, steady and unhurried. “You’ve gained a few kilograms since your last record. Not yet enough to warrant a dietician’s sermon, but worth noting for the logs.” He angled the tricorder slightly, recalibrating for clarity. “And here,” he tapped once against the display, “I’m seeing stress in the tissue just beneath the sternum. Old injury site. Did you notice anything unusual during the last mission—fatigue, tightness, loss of breath?”

“Metabolism slowing, doc? I am getting older but don’t think I’m eating more,” he asked. He knew he’d gained some but had not put a lot of thought to it.

For the other question he thought for a moment. Then another. The whole mission was a flop. He shook his head. “No, nothing like that, at least not for most of it. I had a fall. Some meters but landed on something not hard. I felt something here,” he said, pointing to around the wound region. “After that there was a tightness. A spark of pain but then nothing really noticed after that. I did have other things that needed my attention. My knee got battered in the fall and some scuffs and we had rather feared being eaten so had other things to think about at the time.” He paused. “I have noticed a kind of .. heat there? And a feeling like a muscle strain if I move at certain angles. That is what got me coming here.”
- Dagen

His voice carried no censure, only the even weight of clinical interest. The question hung in the quiet of Sickbay, his dark eyes resting on Thor with the same focus he gave any patient under his care.
