IC: As they made their way down the tunnel, they would find about fifty feet in the tunnel widened and increased in height. The officers would not have to crawl but could walk upright although the ceiling was only about 6 feet high. Really tall individuals would have to watch their head as they walked but again most could be upright. The walls of the tunnel however were no longer earthen walls of packed mud. Instead, they appeared to be filled with some sort of residue. It was hard and had the appearance of bone. Scanning it with the tricorder would show that it was made of osseous tissue. The tissue was not smooth but had holes spaced consistently every three feet. They would also find the tissue was not solid but had a hollow core under each of the holes. It was as if there were small cocoons of sorts however right now the cocoons were empty. Inside some of the cocoons, there were trace amounts of a gel-like substance.GM Kate
Standing was better than crawling by any standard but the low ceiling had Dagen self-consciously ducking or with head hunched a bit when his hair brushed along it. He kept his eyes on the monitor and his knuckles rapped along this change with the tunnel walls. It sounded hollow and reminded him of a hard crusty candy .. brittle I think someone had described it as once. But it was bleached like bone and showed a certain order to it. “Looks like something one would see with insects rather than big rats,” he offered. He glanced inside one of the holes as they shuffled by. Looking to Reia he shrugged. He was hardly a biologist. As an engineer he saw order and creativity. While it could be instinctive it could also be more.
Dagen, CEIf by passing by one of the holes he peered into, if any of the gel like substance happened to touch Dagen’s skin, or anyone else’s, they would feel their skin go instantly numb. It would remind one of an analgesic to take away pain on contact and create the sensation of one’s limb going to sleep.
There was that gel inside that made it just look goopy and ikk inside. Dagen satisfied himself with rapping at the outside. He rather remembered a caution that his mother - no, Thrace’s mother, Thor’s second host, saying to not put his fingers where they shouldn’t go. Not that that hindered Thrace, though Dagen was not compelled to touch. He wasn’t sure Thrace would have either. Granted Thrace never was off Trill. He’d likely never be caught dead in what looked like rodent catacombs anyway.
Reia peeked into one of the holes and made a face. Glancing back at Dagen she shook her head.
“I think I’d like to steer clear horror movies for the next two weeks love. Maybe some good old fashioned nature documentaries? Or even those engineering films you’ve been wanting to show me.”
- Reia, CIO/Comms
“Like the wildest nature trails in the Federation?” Dagen said with a smile, “or do you mean the ‘extra credit’ engineering films,” he added with a wink.
Magnus perked up “I have a great documentary on the life and history of the Canadian Goose I highly recommend” He said in a hushed tone, he was unusually nervous as he was experienced at fighting other sapients, not hordes.
XO
“Or that too,” Dagen said.
Tom tapped the material and used a bullet from one of the extra magazines to scratch at the surface. He was testing the hardness of the material to determine if the material was hard enough for him to bounce shots off of if needed.
The substance was extremely strong reminding one of concrete but the gel like substance had the viscosity of oil. It was extremely slippery if rubbed between one’s fingers. It also had a numbing effect. If it got on one’s skin it would create the sensation of one’s limb falling asleep.
“”Makes me wish I had my TR-116 rifle right now.” Tom said to no-one in particular, his voice dead calm.
Tom was hyper focused taking into account the positions of the team members he could see and hear as well as the environment they were in.
- Tom, IntSec
On the upside, he thought, they wouldn’t fit into those pouches, whole anyway. With a small sigh he shuffled along with the others. Right now there was distinctly little to see, making rather more glances to Reia than was necessary. Give him a machine to work on, he thought, even though he did find this scarily exciting. It was like being IN one of those horror movies, running to the climax. Or so he hoped it would be a good one.
- Dagen, CE“Does anyone else feel like they should be getting a notification about reaching a checkpoint in their HUD?” Thomas asked quietly. “Or hearing any ominous music?”
COS
Tom shook his head.
“I always turn the background music off in my games, it’s too distracting if the soundtrack is good.”
- Tom, IntSec
“That is just it,” Dagen said. “I’m not hearing anything. Nothing like the sound of rushing creatures swarming toward you like we heard in and under the lab.” He checked the calibration on the scanner he was given. It wasn’t one of ‘his’ - his being Fleet issue - but it was up to now coming up with just showing them in the area. He did what all engineers and wanna be engineers had done for centuries when he didn’t think it might be working right - he gave it a couple of taps near the display, the modern version of kicking the back thruster.
- Dagen, EngReia couldn’t help but smile when she saw what degen was doing. There had been many technical taps along the way in their marriage. Mostly, devices in their quarters that had misbehaved would be met with the solid thwack, desired behavior achieved.
“I’m not hearing anything either. That could mean one of two things in my opinion. Either, there is nothing to hear and I really don’t believe that. The other thing, which I believe is more likely, is that we’d better really be preparing for something terrible.”
- Reia, CIO/Comms
Dagen looked behind and ahead. “Anyone getting anything?” he asked. His wasn’t the only device that they had. The corridor was faintly claustrophobic what with the alien ‘architecture’ if one could call it that. It looked like some kind of either pod for larvae or their habitation den. Either way it seemed nobody was home. Maybe we should have brought a pie along. Mother always said bringing a pie or cookies helped out the ‘meet the neighbors’. Perhaps he should put that into a suggestion for first contact scenarios. After a quick scan replicate a batch of good old fashioned cookies.
- Dagen, CETom looked back over his shoulder.
“We might be the pie or cookies. Anyone consider that the Volians might still be out foraging and might be coming back soon to find us, strangers, standing in the middle of their home?” Tom asked sounding a little nervous.
- Tom, IntSec
Dagen lifted a brow at that and turned to Tom. “I’m probably a cookie. A bit too crunchy I think for a pie. It’s being too nutty. Comes with being an engineer.” The thought of being either did not sit well with him. He had, on away missions, rather relied on an escape clause like the transporter but that was not available for them what with the mineral in the ground preventing it. No technological bolt hole this time. He checked his scanner ahead for life signs that were not Volian.
Reia always thought of herself as a slightly above average woman on the bravery scale, if such a scale existed, but this mission was definitely trying her patience on that front. She looked around again and did another scan with her instruments. Cookies, pie, no thank you. She didn’t want to be either one.
“Well, my introductory chemistry teacher did once call me a tart. I don’t think that’s what he had in mind though.”
- Reia, CIO/Comms
Thomas suppressed a snicker at the comment.
“What flavor I wonder .. ” Dagen murmured so that she could hear and, when she looked, gave Reia a wink.
- Dagen, CEReia merely gave Dagen a look and licked her lips. He knew damn well the flavor was mango.
During the pause in the banter, a small moaning like sound could be hear. It was not a moan of pain but more of someone waking up from a sleep. The sound was about 30 meter ahead of the group.
GM Kate
“Ah crap,” Thomas muttered, hopefully quiet enough to not be picked up on comms.
“Hopefully they didn’t leave behind a guard to deal with that.”
COS
Dagen stopped short at hearing that sound. It sounded strangely like his father rising from an after work nap. But echoey and far away. That was some ‘waking’ as he consulted his scanner and got nothing inside of 25 meters. “Somebody’s not quiet,” he murmured.
- Dagen, CETom began a tactical advance towards the sound. He hoped that none of the cloaked guards were in his line of movement or fire.
- Tom, IntSec
Reia heard the noise and begin doing something similar to what Tom was doing. Security came in many forms and she was one of them. She had wondered if something like this was going to be happening sooner or later. What had happened to everybody these creatures had taken? They were somewhere, here was as good a place as any.
- Reia, CIO/Comms
Thomas reluctantly advanced along with Tom and Reia, unable to suppress the bad feeling he had about this.
COS
As they moved down the corridor, the sound increased slightly in volume but not that much. It was louder grunts and moans as if someone was gagged.
GM Kate
“Don’t like this, don’t like this at all,” Thomas muttered. “We’re gonna get there, remove the gag, the guy will go pale and shaky and stammer out ‘Behind you!’ and bam! Giant monster Volian, fangs bared, ready to try out a tasty new snack.”
COS, genre-savvy
Vanessa felt her head throbbing as if waking from a hangover. Her body numbs and her limbs thick as if everything had fallen asleep due to lack of circulation. The space was deathly quiet unlike the last time she remembered being awake. There were no sounds of chaos or destruction. The screams of those being attacked were eerily silenced. Opening her eyes, Vanessa blinked rapidly trying to clear the darkness from her vision. Opening her mouth, Vanessa attempted to call out to anyone but was abruptly halted. A thick gum like substance held her mouth closed. Instantly, she felt a wave of panic coursing through her body. Vanessa worked her jaw until it ached trying to break the gum like bond covering it. She could only hear her voice in her head. The ambient sound was grunts and moans that seemed to echo around her.
Vanessa Slade CNS / GM Kate
The sound of the grunts was only about ten feet from their current spot which any tricorder or sensor would lead the team to about two dozen life signs. Half of the life signs were strong and indicating increased respiration and heart rate. The other half were weak and hard to get a reading on as if they were slowly ceasing. The moaning and groaning was getting louder but still unintelligible. The space was pitch black and the only light in the space was from the security and science teams illumination devices.
Arriving into the space the teams would see the same plaster - cement like pods they found previously only these pods were filled with occupants. Some of the pods had holes punched into them where a thick oozing gel leaked. Shining a source of illumination at the top of the pods, the security and science teams would be able to make out the pale blue skin tones of Beltrans. They would also be able to see the glimpse to two skin tones that were not Beltran but that of the Genesis Captain and counselor. Over the heads of every occupant in one of the pods was a thick gum like substance. It was grayish in color and was especially thick around the eyes, ears, and mouth. The gum like substance appeared to be working as a blindfold and gag for those in the pods.
While the plaster-cement of the pods and gum like substance was hard, it would be able to be removed by someone banging or pounding on it from the outside. If one could start a crack of the pod, it would be able to be pulled away with some effort.
GM Kate
Years of service in the corp gave Calvin an edge. He had honed his skills of waking from unconsciousness without the burst of panic most people felt. Most people reacted violently when they returned to consciousness. They thrashed and screamed desperate to gain some measure of control in an uncontrollable situation. Instead, Calvin used the surprise of regaining consciousness to his advantage. He did not react but slowly let his senses tell him everything they could about the predicament he was facing. Calvin was bound, gagged, and blindfolded however he could hear muffled groans very close to him. Calvin was bound but it was as if his body was encased in a thick glue versus security binders. Wiggling his fingers, Calvin found his limbs could move as if he was swimming through quicksand. Calvin kept the movements small. There was no point to expend his energy now. There would be time later to come out swinging.
Instead of struggling to free himself, Calvin kept the panic down running mental drills. He replayed the last memory he had which was fighting off the Volians and trying to save Vanessa. He remembered seeing her pulled away before his world went black. While he had no basis to believe that the muffled gags were his counselor, it was a possible assumption that they might be in the same space. Vanessa did not have his training. It would stand to reason that the muffled vocalizations were coming from the lost member of his crew.
Marius CO
“Not good,” Dagen murmured as he moved directly toward the ‘pod’ where the Captain was at. Frowning he tried to see what he could do. The others behind had the security training and would help or defend. How could he break in? He had the tricorder in hand but little else. Oh a weapon but it was unknown. He could as easily burn a hole through this .. cocoon. With little thought he brought back his old days .. now two decades past .. of when he trained in MMA and, using the butt of his hand thrust it against where he thought a piece of the cocoon was thinner in the hope to open a crack to get a hand hold.
- dagen, CE“I agree,” Thomas said. “Get them out, I’ve got your six.”
His face was stony as he turned to cover the retrieval, raising his weapon to a ready position.
COS
If and when the teams hit the cocoon it would start to crack and chip away. It would require a significant force but with each blow, the cocoon would start to chip away like plaster from a wall. The greater the force of impact, the more the cracks would spread out in a web like pattern further weakening the entire structure. Given enough blows, the cocoon would effectively shatter. It is worthy to note however that the gel like substance they found in the prior cocoons would be in these cocoons but in a larger quantity. If it got on the skin when breaking open the cocoon, it would make the affected area numb and give the sensation of muscles that were asleep. One could move but it would be as difficult as trying to walk on ones leg when their leg had fallen asleep.
GM Kate
Tom pulled a knife from his boot and began striking the hard exterior of a cocoon with the pommel chipping away at it.
- Tom, IntSec
Dagen got as far as making some cracks. He could put his fingers in and then give a pull but the oozy gel like stuff didn’t bode well. He had already gotten on the tip of the middle finger on his right hand and it was beginning to feel numb. “Anyone have some gloves? This goo is not friendly,” he asked as he wiped at his fingertip on his trousers and looked at it. “Making my finger end numb,” he said. “Don’t touch it.” He glanced inside at the captain and counselor and wondered if they were numb from it by being immersed in it. He knew he was being perhaps biased in his freeing ‘his’ own people first but his general loyalties right now were quite polarized after all he had seen from them.
- Dagen, CECalvin could feel the banging due to the small vibrations of the gel around his body although he could not tell what or who was causing them. The most logical assumption was that it was the Volian’s releasing him but for what. He only let that thought occupy his mind for a fleeting second. He needed to find a way not to be someone’s dinner. The small shifting of the gel against his body let him count the rhythm of the blows. Calvin focused the only sense he could on the blows trying to mentally time when he was free. Not being able to hear or see anything, Calvin would have to bide his time. The second he was free of the cocoon, he would come out swinging.
Reia surveyed the scene once more. She had a plan, and this would make her feel so good after all she had been through on this planet. She approached a cocoon and unleashed a very strong, obviously practiced, spinning back kick against it.
- Reia, CIO/Comms
OOC: Fixing a split.
Dagen saw Reia’s move and shook his head. “Show off,” he said to her with a wink and a wonder at just why he hadn’t thought of something similar to do. Perhaps he was just that bit more frustrated and in a small panic at seeing the Captain stuck behind that wall of .. resin? With gloves he attacked it with more fervor trying to pull away chunks of the wall.
- Dagen, CEVanessa felt the thud of her surroundings and then the sensation of falling forward. With the thick gum like band covering her mouth, ears, and eyes, she was highly disoriented and starting to panic. In a sense it was like being in a sensory deprivation tank with the nightmare of how she got there. Her mind became chaotic with the thought of not being able to defend herself from those that had taken her and placed her here. Impacting the ground, Vanessa tried to push herself up but the muscles in her arms and legs were frozen. Vanessa opened her mouth to scream out for help but the thick gum like band stiffled any sound except for a huffing like sound. If these things were going to eat her, she was going to make them choke on every bite.
Vanessa Slade CNS
When the Genesis officers were removed from the cocoons, the gum like bands over their eyes, ears, and nose would be blocking out those senses. If the individuals wearing them were calm and still, the bands could be cut away by a sharp knife or blade; however, with as close as the bands were fitted, it would be almost a surgical precision to remove them but it could be done.
GM Kate
Calvin Marius CO
Tom worked as best he could to keep the numbing gel off of his skin as she tried to ease Calvin out of the cocoon and avoid injuries to both of them.
Tom, put on his dress gloves started working to remove the gum keeping them blind, deaf, and mute if Calvin would allow him to do so.
“Stay calm and still sir, I’m trying to felgacarb off of you.” he said as he began carefully cutting a slit in the gum covering Calvin’s mouth to facilitate some communication.
Tom might not have been much for unarmed impact fighting but he was an expert at pressure points and his mastery of blades and ballistic weapons was hard to beat.
- Tom, IntSec
With the numbing sensation all over his body from the gel, everything felt like a gross motor movement. His skin lacked the sensitivity for anything fine motor. The feeling was gone, but as much as you numbed the senses, the body might not feel pain, but it could feel pressure.
So the knife on his face did not feel like a precision instrument but more like the pressure from something blunt like a club or a million small feet trampling over his face. Calvin was not squeamish with critters however the idea of the feet belong to Calvin eating critters put a different spin on things. He did everything in his power not to move at all. Easier because he didn’t really feel pain, harder because his imagination was far worse than most anything that would really happen, but a passive perhaps unconscious foe was an advantage he wanted to make use of not that he could defeat one of these things in hand to hand combat even with surprise, but a chance was a chance.
Marius CO
Reya smiled maniacally and gave Dagen a thumbs up. This seemed to be working so she figured, why not just continue? Sighing, she continued her destruction of that particular cocoon with one blazing kick after another. As long as that continued without harm to herself, she would just keep doing it.
- Reia, CIO/Comms
