Moving to a small elevator in the wall, the men were transported down to the floor of the large cavern. The General looked at the Federation officers. “We had a report that one of our shuttles went down. It was carrying some of your people. I do not know who and we can not contract anyone however, I am willing to travel to that destination after we secure the science station. I am not a monster. We are not deplorable people. Our system worked for centuries but many of us want change. Will you help us?”

Well, now it was a rescue mission. That was certainly something he could get on board with.

A coup was something of a different story.

Magnus nodded to the General “That would be most appreciated General” His first instinct was to head out directly to rescue his people but he had no practical experience with the horde, no communications with the Genesis and no logistical support without the army. He did a quick assessment of the numbers and ran a few simulations in his mind on overtaking one of their shuttles through force and he didn’t like his odds, with the Captain and a dozen of McGregor’s best and their own weapons maybe but using unfamiliar gear in their home turf was to their disadvantage, he’d reconsider once they were topside. He didn’t directly answer the general’s request for help since he wasn’t entirely sure what to make of the man.

The teams split into several groups so that each group could ride in one of the four jeep like military vehicles. The tunnels they were traveling down were wide enough for a two by two formation. After about a ten minute ride, the Federation officers, if they had tricorders on them, would start to get long range readings of energy signatures that were Federation. They all seemed to be grouped together but it was unclear if they were moving or held together in a cluster.

“If this is that Security Liaison that met us at the landing platform, I might let the Volians have him,” Thomas said to Magnus.

Magnus gave the security chief a grim smile “Now, now, Commander. We save them first then decide if they annoy us enough to toss them overboard” He still used naval terms despite them being in a ground vehicle.

The closer then grew to the readings the Federation officer would notice two things. The first was that the group seemed to be moving towards a larger mass of life signs. The second was that the second larger mass of life signs was the Volians. There was a chance that comms might be working but one would have to try them to see. The timetable to rendezvous with the group on the sensors was going to be close. At the rate the Federation group was moving towards the Volians, it would take top speeds to reach them before they encountered the Beltrans mortal enemy. The larger problem was the group of Federation officers seemed to be moving away from the direction the military was heading. It would take a conversation with General Lagos of the Beltran army to change the course of the current military expedition.

The advanced comms system of the military allowed for person to person communication within a limited area. Unfortunately, the cave system they were in was causing a lot of interference. The message being received by the intended party might not be exactly like the message being sent however it was recieved.

“Keep trying, assume they don’t receive it until we get a reply.”

Thomas nodded, =/\=This Lt. Commander Thomas McGregor to any planet-side Federation personnel. If you hear me, stop moving. Stay where you are, we’re coming for you. Please respond.=/\=

Magnus leaned towards the General “Sir, is it possible to adjust our heading to reach our people before they run headfirst into the Volians?” there was a respectful urgency in his tone.

“Your people are not my concern nor my objective. The science facility can not fall. If your people have chosen to venture about on their own that is not my concern. They should be more disciplined at following orders.” Lago’s tone was firm and unwavering.

Magnus’s lips turned into a thin line but before he could speak another officer spoke.

After several tense moments, a Beltran officer cleared their throat. “Sir long range scans are indicating that the science facilities shielding has been breached in the main control complex.” Tapping a few buttons, an image was sent to the screens of the vehicle for all to see. In the middle of the facility there appeared to be a hole several meters long that ended in a large shaft like structure. A logical assumption would be the Volians had tunneled up underneath the shielding to breach the facility. The life signs were minimal in the science facility however where was a large life sign of about 20 individuals in the shaft like structure moving away from it. There was a better than not chance that the life signs were Beltran science officers and possibly Federation officers but the scans could not differentiate the biology of the group.

“Sir if these people might be the last of our scientists not sequestered in the palace. I am not sure we could afford to lose an entire generation of people?” The Beltran officer had real concern in his voice.

Lago looked at Tom and Magnus. He could ill afford to send his resources to a rescue mission for some alien officers when his own people were in jeopardy.

Magnus had a neutral expression on his face “General right now you have the resources to assist both groups, when we leave the cave system we are currently in it’s more than likely we’ll be able to get into contact with my travelling group, at that point I will have them redirect their efforts closer to where our convoy is headed, at that point only a portion needs to be redirected to pick them up. At the same time we can get into contact with our people at the instillation and give directives” He’d let the comment about not following orders slide, not mentioning their failure to mention the potential for this incident or the fact that it was one of their shuttles that crashed, both were unimportant and contentious statements.

Lago did not like the idea of splitting up. That never worked in one’s favor. Just as he was about to reply a messaged appeared to come through the Starfleet officers comm badges.

=^= Genesis this is Thor, Reia and Tom are with me. We were sucked into an underground passage underneath the science facility. Something else is down here. Can you give us direction with sensors to where we should go? Team extraction would be .. good. =^=

“Your people can not be beamed out. The magnetic storm around us blocks all beaming technology.” Letting our a Beltran growl, Lago knew ther was nothing they could do. The message stated that there were three people but the lie signs showed far more. That meant the Beltrans were there too. “Change course. Head for the life signs.” Looking at Magnus he responded, “call your people. Tell them we are on our way.”

There....just a faint reading, but it was enough. =^= Thor, no exit confirmed. So find cover if you can. Stay out of sight until I can find a way out for you guys. I just need....a little time. I will use my tricorder to ping your comms and triangulate your position and then scan the area for any alternative routes, but I need you to hold position.=^=

The message coming through their comms was from the CSO and indicated at least part of their crew was in communication range with one another.

Magnus gave the General a nod followed by giving the Security Chief a wave commanding him to make the call.

=/\=Thor, Almikraz, this is McGregor. The XO and I are with a Beltran military unit en route to your position. Hold position if possible,=/\= Thomas said, instantly tapping his comm.

“So if they’re under the science facility, that likely means that it was evacuated, right?” he asked.
