The men traveled down a long turbo going what could be assumed hundreds of feet below the surface. The doors opened into a room that resembled a command center except instead of metal walls, the space was drilled out of rock that resembled granite. Chairs and consoles dotted three of the four walls in the space. Along one wall however, was a large viewscreen. It ran from the floor to the ceiling in a huge pane of glass. Looking out the window one could see a vast cavern made of the same granite-like substance. While it was easy to look out the viewscreen, the view was slightly hazy from the shielding covering the space.

In the cavern, one could see slight distortions if they knew what to look for. The distortions were not noticeable to any probably without a security or military background. They would most closely resemble camo netting over weapons placements, foxholes, vehicles, and supplies.

Magnus half jogged after the General to keep up “Huh” He said as he looked through the cavern, it was a sight he hadn’t seen in over twenty years. “Auxiliary command outpost” He mused “I’m assuming that from here there are multiple avenues of escape,” He said looking at the vehicles. It was clever to have a second command station under and away from the main installation, made strategic sense.

Thomas tried not to shudder. Call him a pessimist, but he didn’t like being underground facing a ravenous hoard that lived underground. Seemed like playing on the home field of the enemy, which was almost as bad an idea as going up against a Sicilian when death is on the line.

“I think it’s more likely the upstairs was the auxiliary, and this is the main staging area for a strike on the subterranean lair of the Volians,” Thomas said.

Magnus considered “I agree with this being the main staging area but don’t you think it makes more sense to have the command post above ground?” He asked conversationally, he was genuinely asking for the man’s opinion.

“You are correct about it being a staging area. You are wrong about the command post top side. How are we to fight an underground enemy when we can’t see what they do below our feet?” Lago had no reason to hold back any truth or information. “We have fought the Volian’s for as long as we could remember. We are not taking the fight to them. This whole area is protected by our shielding. The Volian’s come here from time to time but their underground network is vast. The scientists were playing with the shield weapons we were developing. It awoke the Volian’s before their cycle but that does not mean we can not use a mistake to our advantage. Since we can not attack, we will try a rescue mission. Not all those that come into contact with the Volian’s die immediately. We will try to save them tonight. Do you want to come or stay here behind the safety of the shielding?”
