Thomas saw a blib suddenly blinking on his workstation, notifying him that the Captain was requesting his presence in his ready room.

Thomas dashed off a quick reply that he was on his way, then rose and headed for the Ready Room, pushing the chime to request entry shortly thereafter.

When they were alone, Julien got up to stand in front of Thomas. He was uncharacteristically in civilian clothes. He gave a sad smile to Tom. “I have to tell you something. I’ve resigned from active duty. I need to be with La’kia when she gives birth to my daughter, and that can only happen on Earth. I’ve come to tell you that.” he said, his mismatched green eyes looked happy and sad at the same time.

Thomas was silent for a moment, but Julien’s announcement did not induce him to adopt a shocked expression.

“That’s… surprising,” he eventually admitted. “Understandable, but surprising. What do you plan to do after the birth?” he asked, moving to sit and motioning for Julien to do the same.

“Can I get you a drink?”

Julien sat down and shook his head. “Better not, thank you. And I don’t know, I haven’t thought that far to be honest. This is the hardest thing I’ve ever had to do, and I had to do a lot.” he said. “Zaharan mothers need a lot of support the first three months while the baby is still bonded to them physically. I might stay on Zahara… as you know La’kia is the Ambassador to Starfleet of her people, she’s a busy woman, so I can watch after the kids.” he said with a beaten undertone.

“Well, diplomacy does work both ways,” Thomas pointed out. “Perhaps you can become a medical attache, after all, you’re very well acquainted with the Zaharan physiology.”

He grabbed a ginger ale for himself from the replicator and took a sip.

“You certainly have much more to offer than simple house-husband,” he said.

Julien smiled and brought his glass to Thomas’ glass with a cling. “I sure hope so, but nevertheless, I can’t see myself staying on Zahara forever. It’s just not the kind of culture I feel comfortable with and they are all smaller than me by the way.” he said and chuckled.
