Vanessa sat in the large conference room waiting for everyone to arrive. She had stopped by sickbay as ordered. Her results were that she was fit for duty, however, that did not mean the results from their scans were not interesting.

Calvin entered the conference room wearing an expression that was far from neutral. The anger on his face was evident and justified. His crew had been kidnapped. The man responsible felt zero remorse. After reporting back to Starfleet command, Calvin’s mood only deteriorated. Taking a seat at the table next to Vanessa he picked up a PaDD and sent the information he had obtained in the last hour for the crew to read on the large wall PaDD.

The information read like a novel about their experiences. A history of individuals, who were removed from their lives, and transported to various locations. Some of these individuals returned home but more than half were bodies that were found after being reported missing to the security division of Starfleet. All were Starfleet officers. Those that were taken had been gone for a minimum of weeks but typically a few months before they were released or their bodies found.

Medically the scans would show the crew of the Genesis were all healthy however, the scans of those taken by Ric were vastly different. It would be easy to assume that if the XO had not found them, Calvin and those taken might not have survived.

Calvin had sent this information to those involved before the meeting for them to digest and discuss when they arrived.

“How are you feeling,” Vanessa asked the Captain. The question was innocent enough however the meaning was deeper. The incident was a far cry from his six months undergoing the psychological cruelty of the Cardassian secret police but the basic elements were there as a psychological hostage: difficulty with reality versus fantasy, being held at an oppressor’s whim, and loss of time. It was unsettling for her and it was only a posh hologram with polite people and lush surroundings. No one had tried to twist her mind for secrets she was duty-bound to keep. No one had leveraged the ending of her pain by forcing Vanessa to name another to take her place. It was an apples to oranges comparison and yet it was still fruit.

“Fine and you.” The irritation in his voice was clear. Calvin had spent enough time answering those questions from numerous counselors to know they expected more than a one-turn conversation. Glancing over at Vanessa, he let out a small sigh of resignation.

“I am scheduling a debrief with the officers involved. I don’t think it needs to be mandatory but I at least plan on offering the option.”

Reia walked in and slipped into a chair a little down the table from where Calvin and Vanessa were. The last few days had been so confusing but she felt like she finally had a handle on it. She waited patiently not wanted to interrupt anybody’s conversation. Truth be told, she was tired in a way she had never been before. Her own bed sounded and would probably feel absolutely wonderful.

Magnus entered a few minutes later, he was reading a PaDD as he sat down in his usual seat, he looked at Reia and then the Captain “I’ve written up my report for your review” He said his tone wholly professional “I included recommendations for new protocols to deal with advanced transporter capabilities” he placed the PaDD on the table and looked at his commanding officer, the man looked more tired than he’d seen him in years.

XO

Thomas was the last to arrive.

“Sirs, Mr. Roc is as secure as we can make him, pending transfer to a different vessel or facility,” he reported.

COS

Tom came in and, before sitting down, set a black box with a red band on it in front of marius. It had a biometric reader on top of it, supposedly for the captain’s thumbprint.

“The box contains the full Internal Security dossier on Mr. Roc. View it at your leisure, it will require your thumbprint to open. Opening the box will indicate your acceptance of responsibility for the classified data within.”

Tom then sat down in an empty seat and waited for the meeting to begin.

Reia smiled sweetly at all the assembled people. She didn’t expect her next words to be taken very seriously, but the mood did need a bit of lightning.

“Request 5 minutes alone with Mr Roc, and no cameras please.”

She was the chief intelligence officer after all, so who knows her request might actually be given some weight.

  • Reia, CIO/Comms

Magnus blinked at the Lieutenant who just entered the room and blinked for a moment at not recognising him, he presumed who he was because of his own notes but that feeling of discomfort always felt fresh every new time he saw the man. He shook himself and looked at Reia and his grin returned for the first time since entering “Towel and a bucket of water?” He asked unseriously.
