Ensign Kylie Brecker stepped into main engineering. She stepped out of the doorway and looked around, taking in the sights of her new assignment. The 5‘9 human woman had short to long auburn hair that was frosted as white as one could get with a darker baseline hair. Her hair was very short in the back, but proceeded to get longer in an aline style haircut. Her hazel eyes gleamed slightly as she looked around at the equipment people had, the stations, the machinery. Honestly the woman looked just a little star struck as she just stood there and openly gawked for a few minutes. Once she came to her senses she asked a few of the personnel around where the CE’s office was. One of the other Ensigns pointed towards one of the ladders towards the aft. After she heard the NE explain that it was one deck up and headed to the right of the ladder then she nodded and thanked the NE before she headed back towards the ladder itself. She climbed the ladder and followed the instructions before moving and standing infront of the door. The Ensign took in a breath, steadied herself then reached up and pressed the call button on the door.

The door swished open to meet a mess. Parts of various tools, an ODN recoupler and quantum flux regulator were strewn across the desk intermixed with a few PaDDs and a nearly buried tricorder. A small figurine of an Academy class ship was among the mess as was a desk plaque that said ‘Chief Engineers Never Die - They Just Slow to Impulse’. The figure at the desk had in one hand a small plasma welder that one might use for finer soldering work and in the other what appeared to be a sandwich that was just disappearing under the welding helmet. The single cyclops like eye of the helmet glanced up, then in a mimicry of exaggerated puzzlement tipped imperceptibly to one side.

Kylie took a look around the room slowly taking in the lived in look. As she eyed the plaque she gave a warm smile understanding the meaning though she thought it applied to many more in the field. She blinked at the figure and watched them for a moment just as curious.

A muffled, “Ensign … ” came out from behind the mask, then the sandwich that was placed on a plate equally mixed amongst the mess. A spotted hand lifted the mask to reveal not a young face, but a pale looking one sporting a five o’clock shadow. Dark eyes peered at her. “I’m sorry,” he said, standing and taking off the helmet to reveal some salt and pepper hair that looked like it had rebelled against any kind of order and won. Reaching out his hand to shake hers in greeting, he continued. “I’m Thor. I remember new crew assignments.” He looked momentarily sheepish. “Are you early or am I late? Either way, welcome aboard.”
- Dagen, CE

She eyed the pips on his collar once he lifted the mask. “Lieutenant Commander.” She said back slightly gruff. When he appologized she looked puzzled a look of confusion crossing her face. But yet she still reached out and took his hand firmly. She had good grip stregnth and wasn’t giving him a dainty hand shake. She gave his hand a firm grip. And shook once before breaking contact.

‘Nice grip’, he thought. Didn’t quite match his wife’s half Orion grip when she meant business, but still good.

She gave him a smile. “A pleasure to meet you Lt. Com. Thor. I am as you said a newly assigned to thr USS Genesis, as I hate to admit it I am fresh out of the academy. But I’m not as green around the gills as you might think. I am Ensign Kylie Brecker.” She explained to him and gave a nod at the end. At his question she couldnt help but give a small snicker unexpectedly. Her hand flew up to cover her mouth, as her look quickly changed. “I’m sorry sir… I wasn’t laughing at you… I dont know why I found that funny.” She seemed embarrassed and worried he may be upset. “But as your the boss… I’ll say I’m deffinatly early more than likely.... probably....”

There was a small wince at the rank she gave. He understood that it was ingrained in the DNA of Academy grads about rank. He remembered those times well in his trial by fire on the Draco many years before. “Early it is,” he said, “and please, Chief works. Saying ranks sounds too much like about to be getting a scolding from your mother when she says your whole name out loud.”

“Kylie nodded and gave him a small smile. “I can understand sir… Chief.”

He moved around and cleared some things off of the only other chair in the room. “At ease and have a seat,” he said with a gesture as paraphernalia clattered onto the already burdened desktop. “First, your preference - Ensign, Ensign Brecker, or Kylie while we are in informal work routines?” He settled into the other chair that was behind the desk and swung it in her direction. “And two questions, why are you not so ‘green’, and if you could go waist deep into any systems on the ship what would you first dive into?”
- Dagen, CE

She took a seat at his request and looked thoughtful. “Kylie will be fine Sir. I’m more use to it than anything.” She smoothed out her lap placing her hand in it to keep them idle. “I was born on an Antares Class Freighter called The Dioportha. A ship that was sold off into private hands after the Federation declaired they had no use for her service anymore. My father was… is… what constitutes as the Chief Engineer here. A generational ship… other than the captain and XO there was no real command structire. Pwoplw just tended to listen to those two, or the most experienced. I’ve been tinkering and learning systems since I was a little tot.” She explained giving a soft smile, though her tone was a practiced neutral, her eyes mist just a little, Kylie wiped them then cleared her throat. “As for your second question....” She paused and thought about it a moment. “I’m a real grease monkey, so I’ll go waist deep into any system as it were. But I have come to know propulsion and warp systems best. Seconded by phazer and shield systems....” she took a breath and seemed to reign herself in a bit.

Dagen whistled. “Antares Class. That’s quite the relic. When was she commissioned?” he asked. That little freighter had been in commission for 200 years give or take and had gone through several design adjustments, principally to their engineering in attempts to keep up with the economic times. The design had not changed much for it when one looked at it, though. “Quite the work horses, those ships. Did it start as a generational ship and then get upgraded but still family owned?” In those ships propulsion was the big thing and likely ‘the’ thing that would give the most trouble’. “Must have been hard to tear yourself from that to go to Starfleet. What did you major in?” What she said was principally major ship systems so fairly well schooled. He’d keep her in mind if they had any ‘old’ tech to look at.
- Dagen, CE

Kylie looked thoughtful for a moment. “Sometime early 23rd century. Approximately 2210 or so. I’m sure the record may be in Starfleets Logs.” She nodded and smiled. “She may be old. But indeed she is reliable. It started as a ship in service to Starfleet… after it’s tour of duty when the technology was outdated it was still in good working conditions, so I would imagine it was sold off and fell into the hands of a entrepreneur that wanted to get started as a cargo hauler between nearby star systems.. I’m not entirely sure if the original owners were the ones that made it a generational ship, or if it went through a series of sells and buys.” Kylie sat up a bit straighter, and crossed her legs, one over the other at the knee. “Yes and no. I didn’t have much attachment to those on the ship. The only person I was close to was my father. I hated to leave him. But I think that he understands my desire for new experiences, and to see how far things have come, maybe one day if I’m lucky I’ll be able to innovate and make my own designs.” She smiled at the thought before her face returned to a netural look. “I majored in Mechanical Engineering… it may seem a little obsolete at least as far as mechanical movement… but it did help field my understanding for warp theory. The energy yeilds are higher, and more explosive consequences… but some of the principles are the same.”

“That would make a neat converted passenger liner. Small touring vessel, like an old yacht or something,” Dagen mused thinking of what that could be shifted into. Something where its slower speed and quaintness mixed with historicity would come in handy. He watched as she fidgeted at her sitting and nodded at her talking about her father. “As much as so much we do is pressing at a glassy display there is an awful lot of things underneath it that needs that ‘mechanical engineering’ to see that what we are pressing works. It’s one thing to know what to command at the display and another to know how to fix what is underneath and where that cabling goes to.” He smiled. “Keeps things from going up in a big bang.” He watched her fiddle and fuss. Was that nervous energy to get going or just nervous in the interview?

Kylie fiddled her hands in her lap some more, she subconciounsly adjusted her uniform. “If I may ask Chief, what about you?”

“You mean after nearly flunking out of first year Academy?” he said with a chuckle. Not need here to mention about his emotional trials of getting bumped out of both the Trill Commission tests and from the Trill Olympic team, both of which he worked for years on just before his entry to the Academy, he thought. “I was a bit of a poster boy, or so I thought in my opinion. I couldn’t wait to get out and away from home. I moved from a cadet to a sitting chief engineer on the Academy ship for a while. Bounced to the Draco for a time.” He paused and looked past Kylie, thinking. “Those were my golden years. After that I had an unexpected injury that laid me up for a time. I took an XO spot on the Atlantis but that was short lived. I was not suited there and my injury acted up again so I took a long sabbatical. Had a contract civilian engineering spot on OP42 in there before returning to Starfleet where I was stationed at Mars taking upgrade classes and helping with the engineering construction of this ship.” His knuckles rapped the top of the cluttered desk. From what he said there was a lot more to it in the tale but that was very much the quick overview.

Kylie looked rather surprised as he asked his first question. “Really now? Hunh.” She didn’t say anything further as he listed off the things that he had done. She listened quietly, her face would occasionally shift expressions, through various ones of shock, intrigue, and settling back to a neutral expression. She nodded at a few points, to show that she was intensively listening. Once he was done with his overview she said “Well, if we needed someone who knew the ends and outs that would be someone who helped put it together.” She gave a small chuckle at her own corny little joke.

“I did, eventually, join with a symbiot named Thor. I’m the fourth host. The first was a scientist in Starfleet in the Kirk era and saw a number of ships of yours about then. The second was a poet who never had much interest in leaving Trill. He was a bit of a strange one. The last was a woman who was an exobiologist. While she was civilian she did a lot of interaction with Starfleet simply because of her profession and Starfleet’s mandates.” He shrugged. “Quite the mix of personalities and experiences.” He gave a lopsided grin. “Do I pass?”
- Dagen, CE

“I have heard of the symbiote Trill bond… but I don’t necessarily understand it. I think I remember something about it being a great honor… if it works then it works.” She gives him a warm smile and then nods. “I would say so Chief, with honors.”
