Menn walked and sputtered out nervous questions and comments as they headed to Captain Marius’ office. Beth however was far more quiet and reserved in her verbal bantering. The ship was on yellow alert so the people that passed the team bringing the guests to Calvin moved about quickly and with little bantering.

As Beth and Menn walked into Calvin’s ready room, the two wore very different expressions. Menn looked concerned and worried while Beth seemed to be oddly relaxed.

Calvin was not sitting in the room as he typically was for meetings like this. Instead he stood with his hands clasped behind his back in a pose reminiscent of a parade rest looking out the window.

He waited until he heard the pneumatic door swish close before commenting, “sit rep” to the officers that had brought Beth and Menn to the room. Calvin had been rather busy the past quarter of an hour but not too busy to know one of his own people were in sickbay.

“The Lesscoo have surrounded your ship. I suggest you comply,” Beth stated drawing a look from Menn. “In fact if my tour has taught me anything it is that you can not interfere so it would be most beneficial for you to move your ship and let us figure out our own path.”

“Captain,” Menn looked at Calvin with an expression of horror. “You..you can’t leave us helpless against the Lesscoo. They will enslave and kill,”

“Oh yes he can and yes he has to. Don’t you Captain? Interfering is against your precious code if I understand your Prime Directive.”

Beth

“Sounds like a clear threat.” came Tom’s voice from a dark corner. He was looking at Beth.

“I honestly thought you’d wait to tip your hand or, at least, do a better job at concealing your involvement with the Lesscoo. I guess it’s true for all races. Courage breeds foolishness. I suppose they promised not to enslave you with the others. Likely they even told you you’d be allowed to rule over a portion of the planet.”

“Which would be any different than if we joined your Federation? Tell me would you set up outposts, fleets, garrisons? How would that be any different,” Beth asked not really caring about his answer.

Tom’s gaze was piercing and he was obviously anything but friendly.

“Perhaps you’re a Lesscoo mole surgically altered to appear as a Messi. A long term agent.”

“Is he serious,” Beth looked at Calvin. “Can you actually do that? If so how can I be sure you are who you say you are?”

Beth

“It’s been done with medical technology far less advanced than yours.” Tom replied, “So the same question can be asked of you.”

Tom turned to to Marius.

“She’s right that we can’t interfere with the internal politics and development of the Messi planet but, she’s overlooked something. She has threatened the Genesis with the Lesscoo, an overtly hostile warp capable stellar race. She has forced our involuntary involvement with the Lesscoo into a conflict state. The prime directive does not apply to the Lesscoo and we can take any actions we deem necessary against the Lesscoo in our own defense. It’s just happenstance that defending ourselves will also defend the Messi.”

Tom had played political games before in the course of his career. This was just another in his long history though his experiences were mostly internal to the Federation.

“I have not threatened you. Your ship is far superior is it not?” Her comment was slightly sarcastic. “You can just scoot on out of the way and leave us to our own choices?”

Beth

Tom gave Beth a withering glare.

“It’s not about being inferior or superior, it’s about intent. Just because you cannot hurt someone doesn’t mean they can’t take action to defend themselves from you if they feel the need.”

Tom turned to Calvin to get his take on the situation.

  “Choices,” Calvin said in a lethal but calm tone. “Seems you are fine making choices for an entire planet and a Federation? So why do you think I can not do the same?”
