Snip
Dagen’s head swiveled at the glassy clang and clatter and the sound of it skittering and landing somewhere. He imagined some repair was going to be needed on that unit, but it was Reia’s jerky, abrupt, and very angry motions that got his attention. What? What did he miss here? What was going on? How had this gone South like this? He glanced over to the console. And he was trying to fix one of her issues for her. In Thor’s lifetimes this was .. apparently new, even if Lin was female and could be emotional too. About to say something, Reia got to it first.“If you’ll remember, I’m half Orion. Those pheromones that get your heart pumping also make my body temperature hotter than the average Human’s and definitely hotter then you, my dear Trill husband. And if you can’t even listen when I’m trying to talk to you, don’t even bother trying to find us some lovely little planet hot, cold, or otherwise. I wanted to know why this was important to you but I guess it’s not. I’m going to bed, screw the environmental controls.”
- Reia
Yeah, like that is hard to forget, he thought regarding the half Orion part. And both parts were stomping to their room and passing like a storm front. He didn’t remember that question, or hearing it. He had been focused on fixing one problem. As she disappeared, he scratched at the back of his neck. Now he had two. Dagen had, since his leave of absence with Starfleet, gotten a bit of a checkered past and sticky problems, but this one was not a quick fix. The environmental controls were the easier of the two.
He let out a sigh. The environmental thing was bugging him, moreso that he didn’t notice it and that it was big for Reia. This conversation was bugging him as it had been, in his imagination, a simple talk, and it was anything but. Shoving off the chair he felt not unlike a knight about to face the dragon, not forgetting that most said knights, became the next bbq. Slowly moving to their room he tried to formulate what to say. A great deal did come to mind, but what ..
As he came into the room, he stopped just inside. “Reia, I’m .. I’m sorry.” That was about as far as his thinking went
DagenBy the time Dagen had stepped into the doorway Reia had slipped out of her robe and into bed. She had taken one of the journals her grandmother had sent her and began writing in it as she did in times of frustration or stress. Dagen’s voice did, however, cut through all of that. Sighing, she set the old style journal and pen back on the night stand.
Ohhh .. the journal. Was it that bad? Dagen thought to himself. That usually didn’t come out unless there was big time things happening in her, and he winced, knowing that he was the cause of this one.
“I think I am too but it would help if we both knew what we were sorry for.” she said patting the bed beside her.
- Reia
He didn’t ignore the gesture, the olive branch, as he had heard many Terrans say and moved over and slowly sat. “I’m guessing I was pushy.” He paused. “I think this is exciting. I .. I guess I let that trample all over you.” He let out a soft, if long, sigh and reached out to cover her hand with his. The warmth was not alien, like he feared it might be in these heated moments, but familiar. He was still bothered yes, but the sensation of the touch brought to his, not mind, but inner being, that they were a unit. Separate but not separate. And that this was not beyond hope. The fight, or the issue.
- DagenReia turned her hand and interlaced her fingers with Dagen’s. She was surprised that she hadn’t realized his point of view before now.
“Oh sweetheart, we grew up so differently. Home was always a secretive place for me. My grandparents thought they were keeping me safe and close but I have a little too much of my mother’s, and maybe my father’s, wanderlust so, as soon as I knew I could apply for the academy, I did. The thought of seeing the same stars night after night had lost all appeal by the time I was about ten or eleven. I can’t promise you that will change so I don’t know if it’s fair of me to plan this pretty little house on some pretty little planet with you.”
Dagen had trouble imagining that. The stars were nice to see - different ones. But home was home and the stars a stable thing. He looked at her fingers about his and nodded in that direction. “This is what I see or feel when I think of home. A stability and an anchor. Trill are different.” Well, everyone and every race they’ve met was different, and that was his intent in tone rather than implying that as a negative thing. “Family is big with Trill. Our ancestors are revered. Some have gods. We don’t. Trill look to our ancestors and that is a .. a, um, familial tie that is big.” He nodded to a small shelf on their wall. On it was his grandfather’s ring that Reia knew he adored. Maybe by saying that he was perhaps hoping for a place on Trill but that would be unfair. Maybe they were trapped in this difference that was not manageable.
Reia paused for a few seconds trying to figure out what to say next and slowly began to smile.
Oh no, he thought, what did she have up her sleeve .. admittedly a rather sheer and short sleeve ..
“So instead of investing in a piece of property I wonder if your parents would invest in a ship for us. Just sail away intot he stars together. I am sorry for throwing the PaDDs around though, the table didn’t deserve that.” she said giving Dagen’s hand a squeeze.
- Reia
He shrugged at the table. Easily replicated if need be as was anything on board. “A .. ship.” By his expression that came as a surprise. Now he did have a hobby ship in the bay - an ancient century old shuttle. But a ship? The cost would be .. what would they get? Any Fleet ship would be too big and needing crew. Anything civilian would be limited, perhaps. His mind went ‘bing’ and he winced at the thought. “There is something that might work,” he said slowly. “A mobile home. There are .. space parks on worlds. Broad landing pads where said ships would park.”
Dagen
Reia had mentioned the idea of a ship in hope to change the conversation to something light but had Dagen really hit upon the solution? The words sounded lovely but she wasn’t quite picturing it.
“Um… Wow! That’s one of the most interesting ideas I’ve heard in a while. I’m not saying that it’s not a good one. It definitely had merit. I think you’re going to have to show me what you’re talking about because I’m kind of having a hard time picturing it.” she said with a slight laugh.
Shifting positions slightly, she leaned her warm body up against Dagen’s.
“So you and I have different ideas on what, physically, a home should be. I think we both agree that you are my home and I am yours and we should probably work this situation out before we retire. So tomorrow morning, show me a space park.”
- Reia
