Tom had been walking around the ship. As he passed the security office, he decided to do a system check and log review. He was sitting at the COS’ desk, screens of data rapidly scrolling by as he read.
- Tom, IntSec
Bump
Vanessa strolled into the security department and stood at the door taking in all the officers. She was here for a purpose but a very specific one. She needed someone with the right build, demeanor, and can do kinda attitude she had at her last assignment. Back home she would have strolled into the fifth precinct and asked Officer Dempsey to help however she was a long way from SoBo. Her eyes settled on one individual. The man wasn’t a towering giant or looked like he could crush your skull like a grape but he did have the intense stare thing going for him as he read the console.
Due to his size, Vanessa knew the man wasn’t the security chief even though he was sitting at the desk. Lt. Commander Thomas MacGregor was a mountain of a man at well over six feet with the bulk to match. In the long run however it didn’t matter. Vanessa needed a body, not the chief of security this time. Moving up the desk she cleared her throat hoping to gain the man’s attention.
Vanessa Slade CNS
Multiple screens were scrolling rapidly, much to quickly for most people to make out what was on a page let alone read it. Tom glanced up as Vanessa cleared her throat.
“Doctor Slade.” he said as if he were familiar with who she was, “If you need Commander McGregor I can call him for you.”
Tom was in the black on black uniform of Internal Security that was often confused for the charcoal on black of Intelligence. He was completely unremarkable in appearance, someone one could follow into a crowd only to have Tom disappear before their eyes though his eyes did have that look of someone that could look into a person and know them.
- Tom, IntSec
“Nah,” she waved her hand. “I was looking to have someone help me out with a problem back home. If you are not busy and want to, you will be perfect. It’s just Vanessa or Slade by the way,” she extended her hand. “I never went for my psychiatric degree.”
“I know.” Tom replied standing and taking her hand, “I was erring on the side of ego.”
“Well then you should have said something more like man Vanessa you are the bomb,” she replied inverting her hands so her palms faced each other and snapped them down towards her body. “You are right. You are always right. Anyone that doubts anything you say needs to see a therapist.” Looking back at Tom she smiled. “That would have blown up my ego. Beeeewwwwmmmm,” she drew her hands out from her head as if it had just exploded making a wide-eyed expression.
When he took her hand, his grip was firm but not too heavy.
“Anyway, I have two boys back home that need to be put back on the straight and narrow. Normally I would just call up Dempsey from the precinct back home but he is busy. If you got an hour, I could use your scary black ensemble,” she twirled a finger at his uniform, “and stern expression to remind these boys that knocking over the corner deli for a bag of chips is not the career path they want to go. I would do it myself but…they aren’t scared of me. You, however,” she let out a laugh, “you could so play the bad cop and get the boys back on the right track. They are good kids. Little rotten and rough but good kids. So are you free for an hour? If not its no problem. I can try to wrestle up a security officer.”
Vanessa Slade counselor
“Well Vanessa, my name is Tom. I don’t expect you to remember that.”
“Pfft I am great with names. I mean how can I be the bomb as a therapist when I can’t remember something as simple as your name,” she waved him off as if he were crazy.
Tom closed the scrolling data on the screens.
“I have time. We can go to my office or another location if you prefer. How badly do you want to scare them to get an Internal Security operative involved?” Tom replied with a laugh.
- Tom, IntSec
“Oh, we can do it here. It will seem more authentic that way,” she said looking around the office. “I mean you both are named Tom so even if they catch the stuff on the walls it won’t mess us up.” Suddenly her face twisted up into a scowl as several colorful metaphors bubbled to her lips as she threw up her hands and rolled her eyes. “Gimme one second. Don’t go anywhere. I need to go grab my personal communicator PaDD. I left it in my office. I’m not sure how the skipper is about pro bono work but you can never be careful. Be right back,” she drummed her knuckles on the desk and walked out the door.
Five minutes later Vanessa arrived back in the security chief’s office but the spring in her step fell flat seeing a strange man sitting at MacGregor’s desk. Drumming her knuckles on the side of the door Vanessa cleared her throat.
“Hey do you have a second,” she asked the man. “I need some help with something. So back in my previous assignment, I used to do some pro bono work with the local kids. Anyway, I have two boys back home that need to be put back on the straight and narrow. Normally I would just call up Dempsey from the precinct back home but he is busy. If you got an hour, I could really use that stern expression and scary black ensemble,” she twirled a finger at his uniform, “you got going to get the boys back on the paved path away from juvie hall.” Vanessa stopped what soon the security department would realize was not a one time speech and stared at Tom drinking in every detail about the man.
“Excuse me do I know you,” Vanessa asked walking up to the desk. Letting out a laugh she took a seat across from the man at the desk. “Kinda having a moment of deja vu here but I never forget a name and yet you looks so familiar.” It was clear by the expression on Vanessa’s face she had no clue who the man was but the situation she had just replayed out was almost verbatim for the one she had met him in.
Vanessa (entering ground hogs day) Slade
Tom shook his head.
“No, you don’t know me but I’ve heard of Vanessa ‘Tha Bomb’ Slade.” Tom replied with a smile.
“I am glad my reputation proceeds me,” she let out a laugh. “And you are?”
“Tom Jarvis, Internal Security operative.” Tom replied.
The screens were blank as he had been waiting for her inevitable return to the scene she had no idea she’d been in before. If they were lucky she would have had her personal PaDD in hand.
“So, do you want an ominous message to the boys? A live chat?”
- Tom, IntSec
“Absolutely.” Propping the PaDD up on the desk, she looked at Tom. “Okay so you don’t have to say anything really. Just keep that scary thing you have going on. Got it?”
Vanessa let out a deep breath as the screen connected to the call. Two young boys, that looked to be just below the teen range, filled the screen. The background behind them looked sterile as if they were in a hospital or school-type setting. “Joey…Frankie, what are you doing,” Vanessa immediately started before they could say anything.
Joey slumped in his seat some as he stared directly at Tom. “Dempsey quit? Who is Lurch there next to you?”
Vanessa Slade
Tom tapped his access code into the security desks interface. He did a quick cross reference and used facial and voice recognition to identify the boys and pull full dossiers on them.
Tom looked at Vanessa. “I’ll have everything I need in approximately seven minutes.”
- Tom, IntSec
Her eyes widened slightly and darted a side glance at Tom. “You know the point is to scare them straight. Not get them into more trouble…right “. Maybe she should have went over the plan more with Tom however if the people back home took enough time to call her, maybe they needed a former approach.
“Dude…Vanessa…they are just dih” Joey started before she snapped her fingers in rapid succession.
“You know I don’t like that talk. If you talk intelligently people treat you like you are intelligent.” Right now she was the definition of a pot calling a kettle black. Vanessa could swear like a sailor on leave but she also knew when not to.
“Fine they are being dorks. We didna do anyting,” Frankie barked throwing his hands down like he was a thug.
Vanessa slade.
OOC. Have fun with the rap sheet if you want -Kate
When the files arrived, Tom saw all the usual traits of misbehaved kids. Petty theft, vandalism, harassment, misdemeanor assault.
Vanessa could see that the IntSec dossier contained much more than their juvenile criminal record. It had medical treatments, doctor’s visits, schools and attendance. Anything that could be considered public or official information was there.
Her eyes widened slightly and she bit her lip. This wasn’t exactly on the record but it seemed Tom had access to every record for the boys minus their Chitter and Space book accounts. As the files flew up the screen she had to stifle a small laugh. Nope there they are plus their BikBox accounts. Many Tom you are one thorough guy.
Tom scrolled rapidly through the two dossiers and looked up at Vanessa, “They’re well on their way to careers as forced labor detainees. It’s a shame, they both show potential in their school evaluations. Strong aptitudes in the sciences, medical, and security. It would be a potential loss to society but,” Tom leaned forward with a smile that though it looked friendly, something about it made people uncomfortable, “Infrastructure Corps always welcomes additional resource laborers.”
- Tom, IntSec
“Yo yo dude whatcha runnin’ your mouth ‘bout,” Frankie groaned but sat up a bit straighter.
Joey gave his friend a side glance and avoided looking at the man next to Vanessa. “Slade, what’s he talkin’ about. I ain’t going to Chuckie’s place.”
“Suffork County Jail,” she translated to Tom. “It is in Charlestown.” Turning her attention back to the boys on the screen, she crossed her arms and raised an eyebrow. “Don’t look at me. You got youhself into this. Why the hell did you think it was a good idea to knawck off Bahnaby’s faw a couple of candy bahs and a watah gun?” The longer she talked to the kids, the more her accent began to slip into words.
“Because it is watah day at school tomawrow and we ain’t got the money,” Joey crossed his hands over his chest avoiding her eye contact. It was not an excuse any normal adult would have accepted and both boys knew it the way they squirmed and fidgeted in the chairs. “Betcha youh friend is gawnna be one of those guys that says we shouldn’t play with watah guns anyway.” The ways their eyes darted about however said they did wonder the answer. It was so easy being an adult and passing out the rules. It sucked being someone that had to play by them.
Joey and Frankie
OOC: I’m guessing the accent is patois, if I’m wrong I can always edit it.
OOC: It is supposed to be from Boston but don’t delete anything. I think the post reads really well. I hope you are liking it. :) Kate
OOC: Yes I am. I hope you’re finding it interesting as well.
Tom shook his head.
“No bredda it nuh bout playing wid di wata guns it ow yuh get dem. Stealing dem a waah likkle ting now but bad habits form easy an eventually lead tuh prison or death eff yuh nuh change early.”
Tom scrolled back a bit in the dossiers. “Wah else yuh ave here? A likkle bullying sum harassment sum vandalism, forgery, unauthorized use of a vehicle? Di momentary rush worth risking becoming a pariah or worse?”
- Tom, IntSec
“Yo Vanessa he just called us a pariah,” Joey wrinkled up his forehead. “Why he gets to use bad words an’ not us?”
Vanessa tried not to laugh at the comment. Giving Tom a side glance she waited for him to explain the word making a small hand gesture to bring the vocabulary down.
Tom shook his head.
“No no man a praiah a waah outcast People yuh steal from eventually ketch di drift an word wi get round.”
“Well he asked you a question,” she leaned back and crossed her arms.
“Because it’s not faih. People don’t know what it’s like not to have stuff and then they think they ah helping just giving us stuff. I don’t want people to know I dawnt got stuff. So if I steal it no one knows I didn’t have it,” Joey replied looking at Tom as if his argument for being arrested was valid. “Youh ah in Stahfleet and you ah wearin’ black. Youh look like youh ah ready to steal something.”
Joey and Frankie
“Life isn’t fair an neitha di universe, dat nuh mean yuh get fi try fi even yuh adds at di expense of othas.”
Tom leaned into the screen and dropped the patois, the expression on his face changed to a chilling seriousness and the gaze he fixed on the boys was piercing and cold.
“You have potential, your school records show it. You have time to change, to better yourselves and your lives.”
Tom leaned back a bit and gestured to his uniform.
“As for my uniform being black, I’m internal security. My job is investigation and apprehension of those that are or could become a threat to the Federation. On the in between times, we can take care of smaller issues such as this one right here. As an IntSec officer have a much broader reach and deeper authority than security and police forces.”
Tom looked up at Vanessa and winked out of view of the boys as he tapped a short command and a screen overlay, that the boys would see on their side as well, began scrolling showing footage caught by security cameras and drones of the boys shenanigans.
“We understand boyish mischief but, when boyish mischief starts looking like criminal habit, we start paying attention.” Tom said as the overlay continued to scroll, “And based on how long it goes for, and how severe it gets determines who comes knocking.”
