“Yes, let’s do this.” she said walking out into the living room.
- Reia
They emerged into the main room to the smell of bacon. The first thing that Dagen noticed was that their clothes - well, his. Reia didn’t start with much - had been folded and put on the console. Reia’s robe was nowhere to be seen but her panties were on the top of the pile. His shoes were tucked under the console. He noticed that other things had been shifted an organized; Dagen was classically a messy and Reia was, thankfully, not a neat freak, which meant that there was usually something about that could be set straight. Mother had apparently done so and was, at that moment looking at the shelves that Reia had had moved in. His dad was at the table hunched over two long square plates of .. bacon. Single strips laid out in a row that he was systematically working at.
He noticed them first. “There you are. I like your replicator. So many choices. Testing your top twenty chosen bacon flavors of those on your ship.”
“Oh don’t go on about your bacon, Shel, we’re here to see them,” his mother said, turning and heading to Reia. “Finally we get to see you, with Dagen hoarding you away like some kind of crown jewel.” She glanced away from Reia to Dagen and gave him a mock stern look.”
Dagen moved over closer to his father, who, true to form picked up one of the half pieces. “Try this,” he said passing it to him. “We were dropped off and heard your ship was here. We didn’t know that but your mother charged onto a shuttle, brow beat the pilot and practically hijacked it to get us here. I expect to be arrested soon.”
“Oh don’t you start. The pilot was very nice and accommodating. We just dropped your names and ranks and ..”
“.. threatened courts martial if he didn’t fly us up ..”
“.. and he was fine with flying us in. And look at you. You look so lovely in that dress. Subspace does not do you justice. It always makes me look like I’ve put on kilos.” Dagen chewed on the bacon. His mother could hold the conversation for the entire party.
Dagen et al ..Reia smiled politely and took in the flood of conversation even though they’d had a light breakfast earlier, the smell of bacon, and her nerves, caused her stomach to growl audibly.
Laughing, she reached up with her right hand to brush a stray lock of hair away from her shoulder. This caused her leather bracelet to slide down her slender forearm revealing Aunt Clara’s gift.
“You must be famished. Evidently Dagen doesn’t feed you enough,” she said with light scorn and a glance at her son, then a quick look at the bracelet. Dagen, evidently was now bent over the bacon with his father quietly listing the flavor of each as they broke off a piece and ate them one after the other. He did look up at his mother’s remark.
“Reia has quite the appetite,” he said, then quickly looked down.“Well I’m glad you enjoy our vast repertoire of bacon. I find it quite entertaining myself to tell you the truth.” Reia said moving to the replicator for more coffee.
His father said, “The replicator at home doesn’t have many. It, uh ..”
“It keeps breaking and losing it’s memory and can’t seem to handle much,” his mother replied, following Reia to their replicator.
“Mother, you can just speak to it. You don’t have to use any of the display to touch it,” Dagen added.
“Oh tut tut, you know knows so much. It doesn’t recognize my voice.”Stopping, she glanced at Dagen’s mother.
“Where would you put those extra kilos anyway? I just don’t see it.”
- Reia
“I’d hoped for some of those on the cruise. The food was just lovely. But you, look, you’ve got a small stain on your dress. Let’s get you into your room and fix that up. We’ll get that off in a jiffy.”
- Dagen et alReia looked down at her immaculate black dress but just couldn’t see a stain.
“I… Um… Really?” she stammered.
Perhaps Dagen’s mother was trying to get her alone for some reason but, what in the 7 Hells could it be?
“Yeah, I guess I spilled coffee on it or something. Dagen? Be careful of that Klingon bacon, remember what it did last time? Okay, let’s go.” she said with a sigh of resignation.
- Reia
As the door slid closed, Dagen’s mother turned and took Reia’s hands. “Oh you look fine, dear. They will be at that bacon for a while. It’s the litmus test for replicators. How many flavors of bacon can be made. Honestly I don’t understand it one bit. The infernal things never work for me anyway.” Her head shook imperceptibly as though it was a common event that was beyond her understanding. She looked at Reia then looked quickly at the room. It was less than pristine but she looked back at Reia. “You’ve done a miracle. I’d nag Dags to clean his room. Best he could manage was reworking it from post apocalyptic to natural disaster.”
“But look at you. Welcome to the family, the nuthouse that it is.” She looked down at their still clasped hands. “I see you’ve met Clara.”
- Dagen’s Mother …Reia relaxed a bit and laughed.
“Oh yes, Clara is quite the character. Very expressive and natural in her ways.” she said glancing around the room wondering if there was anything left out from last night or, perhaps, the night before.
“We all have our gifts,” she replied with a wave of a wrist, which she then brought over to tap a the band. “Clara’s greatest gift is living in her own little world. But to be fair we all got that honestly with our mother.”
“I think Dagen may have actually learned to tidy up a considerable amount before he met me. We only had one serious conversation about it, after I moved in, and that was in regards tot he shelves in the living room. I leave his disasters and engineering schematics alone if he doesn’t cross my line of, well, more clean things. I think it kind of works most of the time.”
- Reia
Mother raised a brow and looked skeptical. “Closets are wonderful things and one that Dags constantly used to stuff his things when he needed to sweep the room. Beware closets. Open them from the side.” Evidently there were memories associated with that. “Now, let’s talk important girl things. Where have you honeymooned? Is he treating you well? Let’s see your ring. This ship is such a step up from the old station he was living and working those years ago.”
- Dagen’s motherReia wondered if all in-laws had the ability to fluster one so. She knew that Dagen’s mother didn’t mean to but Reia couldn’t help but be a little embarrassed by the whole thing.
“Well… Um… Honeymoon? No, not yet. We have some time scheduled for it though. Here, let me show you the brochure…”
“Scheduled,” she tut tutted. “If I get to see your Captain I’ll give him an encouraging word to send you off with his blessing. You two need a good time away from the normal. Dags is good at the now. Always was. But doesn’t think past next month.” She lowered her voice conspiratorially and finished with a small nod. “Gets it from his father.”
Reia quickly walked to her small bureau and fumbled for a moment with a stack of paperwork before finding the beautiful 2D brochure for a specific resort on Risa. While there she also checked the status on the repair ticket for their quarters. Apparently they had moved to 25th down the line. She simply sent a screen shot to Dagen with the caption Really Dagen?!?. Turning back, she presented the brochure to her mother-in-law.
“I’m certain, once we finally get there, we’re absolutely going to love this place.”
She presented the paperwork, and her ring, for inspection.
“That looks very nice. You will get out and see some of it I hope.” She sighed in what could only be an exaggerated fashion. “I didn’t get out to see very much on ours. We were .. busy, you know.” She tapped Reia’s ring hand, her gaze now on the ring. “We meant to. Just didn’t happen that much. I put it down to a good bit of stamina on the part of us sisters.”
“As for how he treats me… You and your husband must have a wonderful marriage because Dagen treats me like a princess. Can’t you tell?”
“Of course, as he should,” Dagen’s mother said resolutely. “Now, tell me about your wedding. I’ve seen some holos of course but give me all the details,” she continued.
Reia was not about to explain all the other ways she allowed Dagen to treat her.
- Reia
Meanwhile .. in the other room, the bacon had nearly been decimated when Dagen received the note. He frowned a little. What was with her? 25 was good. Did she not know that that was practically at the top? “Work?” his father asked, interrupting.
“Not really.” Dagen said. “Reia. Told her that I’d get a crew on to the air filtration here.”
“Uh huh,” he said, knowingly. “And not fast enough?”
His brow furrowed. “I guess not. It’s at 25 on the list.” He rubbed his brow, looking at the few remaining strips of bacon. “We average over 300 in a day of routine maintenance.
“25 still looks bad. Optics, son.”
He sighed. “Yeah, I guess.”
His father tapped the band. “We have one of those. Horrific things. Well, fun. But hardly a toy.”
“What is it? Aunt Clara sent it this morning before you came.”
The only response was a chuckle.
“Dad?”
“Reia has one?” Dagen nodded. “It’s a neuralink device. What you feel she feels. What she feels you feel. At least in the pleasure centers of the brain and body.” He looked at it then reached out and turned his wrist up to view the underside of the band. “Here .. is the intensity level. Need to start slow and for ancestor’s sake don’t get addicted to it. Oh ..”
“What?”
“It’s at max. See this?” He laughed suddenly. “No wonder you didn’t hear the calls.”
“Uhhh .. about that .. “
DagenReia was feeling a bit more relaxed by this time and she proceeded to explain to her Mother-In-Law how she surprised Dagen at the promotion ceremony with the impromptu proposal and wedding. That the Captain was so wonderful to let them take over the day like that.
Dagen’s mother gave appropriate ooohs and tuts and other sounds through the tale. “Oh my. How splendid a story! All I can say is you are going to fit into the family quite well with your spontaneous ideas like that. How memorable! And such a good sport your Captain is.”
“As far as stamina goes yes, we’ve both got that well in hand. I was quite certain he would have me beat in that arena but I guess that’s where my Orion side comes in a little handy. It also plays into my metabolism which means I’m absolutely starving. Do you mind if we go join the husbands for second breakfast or something?” she asked putting the brochure away.
- Reia
“Doe he continue with his exercises? That .. that thing he does. With the sticks on his feet, and shooting. I’ve never understood it and it worried me sick he’d run into a tree or go off a cliff doing it. He was so into it when he was young but for a while he put it aside. To be honest I thought he was looking a bit paunchy before coming onto this ship.” She looked her up and down. “Something to eat would be splendid. And we mustn’t let you waste away. Do they have restaurants on this ship? Or do we have to go across to that station there?”
- Dagen’s motherDagen’s mother’s question gave Reia a stellar idea.
“I think we should make a day of it, go to the station, and live it up. Make the boys show us off or something. What do you think Dags?” Reia asked coming into the living room with a beaming smile, “How about we go to the station and see if you and my wonderful new father-in-law can discover if they have any new adventures in bacon for you?”
- Reia
Dagen blinked, then looked at his dad, then looked out the thin window to see the sprawling station they were docked to. Dagen had visited their power plant. He scratched his head to give him time to think. If it was OP42 he would know all the shops. But this? This was a mostly unknown.
“Sounds like an adventure!” he said. Truly he did like adventures. When he was with his father it was normally out in the bush. With mom, well, it was entirely in the court of what appliance he needed to fix. Note to self. No places that have electronics within touching distance.
“Let me check on the queue for the filters,” he said, stalling. Pulling out his PaDD he quickly tapped out to Bat and Angel. =^= Quick. Need interesting places on the Station to see and eat =^= As a secondary glance he checked the queue. It was at 19. Getting there in good time. Nodding, he typed out more. =^= Deeg, Sebastian, look after the PM lists today. Parents made a surprise visit. Will be on the station. =^=
While he sent that off he had a reply from Angel.
=^= Food establishments:
The Grotto – excellent vegetarian dishes and drinks
Sammies – Terran run. Pasta very nice
The Grease Monkey – Iotian establishment. Specializes in ‘street’ food. Ask for Jimmy.
Deltan – Classy. Upscale. Try to get Manuel as a waiter. He will try pushing tequila.
Blue Spirit – Andorian run. Seafood, Sushi =^=Bat replied ..
=^= They have a great tropical garden on Deck 5. Lots of walking and seating. They say it’s not holo but you have to wonder. Part live petting zoo. Arcade on Deck 8. Fast Eddies. Deeg and I swear by it. Don’t race with Angel. She says they are illogical, but she plays to win. Space museum on Deck 10. Totally holo but you can choose the theme of what you want to learn about. Deck 4 has an art gallery. =^=Dagen sent his thanks over. Who knew Angel was big on restaurants and Bat on games? Well, he could see that part. “Lots to see.” He scratched his head. Maybe they could grab some food at one of those places and then take it to the garden to eat. He showed the three the food options. “What do you think?”
Dagen
Reia used this chance to cuddle up to Dagen and look over the food options. For some reason, a long walk appealed to her.
Dagen noted that while dad had told him about the wrist band and the level it was at, whether by omission or by bacon, he had not actually said ‘how’ to change the power level of it. As such as Reia slid in close and he felt that soft heat that always seemed like such a miracle of nature to him, he caught that tickle at the back of his mind that was not pheromones so much as likely a mix of that and the band. For the moment he pushed it to the back, as insistent as it was. Dagen was also cognizant of the filters and his wife’s pheromones. A walk would do them well. Perhaps they could find a little recess somewhere and .. no, Dagen, mind on task. No, Dagen, Reia is not the task. Perhaps the dessert.
“Well it all looks interesting. You know I love my sushi. I don’t know. Is it too early in the morning for a good steak? I seem to remember burning extra calories last night.” she said mischievously forgetting fro a moment that her in-laws were there.
- Reia
To Dagen steak was always better than raw fish no matter how well presented. ‘And this morning’, he nearly inserted in there. Flushing slightly, he caught a half smile from his father and his mother who was innocently looking at what was on the shelves but he knew she was paying utter attention. He squeezed her knee. “So then,” he said, loud enough for everyone to hear. “Seems like we’re looking at either upper or lower crust for this. The Monkey or the Deltan may fit most tastes.” The trouble was he knew his mother would go with the Monkey and his father shoot for the Deltan. Both seemed fine to him. He was about to suggest the Monkey when he glanced at his wife’s cleavage, er, nice dress. “Deltan?”
Dagen
Reia wondered why Dagen didn’t suggest something with massive pieces of protein on platters. That did fit her tastes sometimes as well.
“If that’s the consensus then sure, Deltan it is.”
She leaned in and brushed Dagen’s cheek with her lips before walking to her in-laws and proceeding to explain a few items on the shelves that she had carefully curated.
“This is about the only thing I really cared about taking from my quarters when moving in. See, that’s a picture of my Gram and Gramps. They raised me after I was about three. And that’s my graduation picture. Wow, I don’t remember half the people there.”
Pausing, she purposefully skipped over the only picture of her with her mother. She would be glad to discuss that subject at length another time. In the center of the middle shelf was a large wedding picture.
“And, of course, this is your handsome son.”
