Valleea smiled sadly and nodded in understanding. But she purposefully kept herself from thinking about the ring of astonishing beauty that had been turned into nothing more than motes of dust. “It seems a lot of people lost something of importance. It’s easy to say they are just object, but that negates the emotional connection and memories it triggers.”

“Can you find a copy in a database, maybe on Trill? I’m sure someone could help you track one down. You’d be amazed at what might be in an archive somewhere,” Valeea said thoughtfully.

Niniane’s smile was back quickly, so easy to come, but not always from the heart. This time it was.
“Maybe. Though not on paper, but surely digital.” she wiped some drops from her face and looked at her hands.

“But a digital image can be replicated as paper. It might not be the original one, but you’d still have something you could hold in your hands,” Valleea said encouragingly.

“Oh, dear, look, I’m all wrinkly. We should continue our chat outside of the water if we don’t want to dissolve.” she said and gave a bright laugh.
“Or maybe you want some alone time? We could meet for dinner tomorrow… or breakfast. I think we’re on the same shift currently.”

Truth be told, Valleea enjoyed the time she spent with Niniane and was looking forward to another chance to spend some time together. “I probably have to do a double shift tomorrow since Ensign Hardy is ill, but I can book my break at dinnertime and we can meet. Just please don’t be angry if I’m much later than planned or have to cancel outright. A lot of the time it’s out of my control.” Valleea wasn’t used to having friends and when she did socialize it tended to be with her fellow medical staff. Intellectually, a crew understood that her schedule was at the mercy of the needs of the crew, but from her observations over the years when faced with the actual reality, some had a hard time with the unpredictable nature of the medical profession.
