“This afternoon is fine, doctor. After all, you’re around now in case anything bad happens.” He did make the tone light, and while he was sure that it was so, the presence of the doc there was a bit of an ace in the hole for him. Just in case, even though he didn’t think it was an issue. Even at the height of his recovery there when it had persistent bleeding nothing was fast there.

Not much further ahead the group walked into a clearing. There were a couple of large logs, meant to be sat on, and a large cooler full of ice, beer, sodas and water. “Yay! Time for a refreshing break!” Sage did a little happy dance as she made her way over to the ice chest. Even though she knew the course had been the easiest for her because of her size and lack of a pack to carry, she was still eager to have a cold one and sit down.

Ben sighed as soon as he saw the logs. Seeing the cooler of refreshments sent a wave of relief that his thirst would be quenched. Ben reached in with curiosity to a soda bottle Ben lifted it up “you know I’ve never had one of these before.”

Dagen moved into the clearing. It felt cooler here but that could just be his imagination on what he might expect. He plucked out a water and ran it over his forehead before opening it. He had thought of the beer and dismissed it. He had not taken to beer that well, preferring the harder drinks. “Never? You were never a kid?” Dagen asked. Finding a spot to sit he rested, his free hand sliding over a line of the log that still held a trace of bark on it.

“You don’t have to drink a soda just because I’m here.” Marius picked up a beer for himself. “Hydrate with alcohol. It does a body good.” All statements that his wife, the doctor would likely disagree with, but there were advantages to being in a crowd. She was less likely to disagree with him in public… or at least he hoped so.

Dagen smiled. It all came down to taste. Things may be replicated but they held essentially the texture, smell, and taste but the components of it were what an individual needed. In short things were not nearly as ‘unhealthy’ as the real thing. Sometimes being an engineer kind of ruined the magic, and while most would know about it so too most would conveniently forget that bit of trivia.

From where she sat on one of the logs, Sage lifted her bottle of beer in a silent toast to Cal. This was his program and everyone was off duty, so they could have whatever they wanted from the cooler. She rarely drank beer, but it just sound good that day—cold and bubbly.

Marius was quite thirsty, but he rarely hydrated during workouts… which probably was really bad overall. He drank before he started to work out and then liked pushing through to the end without a stop and then did all his protein and liquid replenishment at the conclusion. He thought even drink breaks would disrupt the aerobic nature of the workout with an unnecessary pause.

Ben shook his head to Dagen “I grew up in a very isolated wooded mountainous village on Earth.. With our people we just lived off the land on Earth as others have done generations ago. We use similar tools to build. We use similar cooking techniques as they did before. We travel to other villages either by horse or walk.”

“What got you out of the hills then?” he asked. “It’s a long way from perpetual camping off grid to a starship.” He smiled. “It’s not easy to walk to.”
- Dagen

“Seeing all the shuttles in the air flying past the mountains. It took years for the village elders to approve my request to even apply for the Academy.” Ben added.

Trill society was very family oriented and clan driven, but even that seemed huge to him when hearing about such approval. “What did they have to do with you?” he asked. He did not realize that there were places on earth that were so governed individually like on Trill.

Sage had finished her beer and was trying to quietly burp into her hand so as not to call attention to herself. It was nice to see the men relaxing their barriers with each other and sharing personal information. It was healthy and she felt good at how naturally the camaraderie had happened.
