Thomas slowly made his way over to one of the aux science consoles, looking at the data the Genny had recorded on the system itself… specifically the composition of the planets, moons and asteroids. He wanted to see if his supposition about a lack of dilithium was borne out by the facts.

Pallas was a yellow sun system. There were seven planets in total with the fourth and the fifth planets having signs of sentient life existing. The sixth planet was a gas giant and the seventh planet had a cold icy atmosphere. The third planet showed an environment that would possibly have dilithium. However, sensors were not detecting any large deposits of the crystal. Uranium and plutonium are present in all the planets, with the highest concentration of uranium in the fourth planet, explaining their use in experimental spaceships. Most other nuclear resources are in trace amounts. There were also quite a large concentration of other radioactive elements found in the first planet but due to the high temperatures on the planet, access to these elements was nil. Duranium could be found in the fifth planet as well as the last (seventh) planet. There were signs of expeditions in the seventh planet but again environmental conditions restricted access.

Thomas perked up a little. So a maybe on dilithium, though on a planet that had not really been explored by the natives, and a yes to duranium, even on a planet with a decent population, though it had either yet to be discovered or its true abilities not realized.

Still, it’s information that could lead to at least a trading relationship with the Pallas government in the future. The Federation could always use a new source of such an important metal.

“It looks like they do have some duranium deposits, though they may not know what to do with it yet,” he said to the Bridge at large. “Possibly dilithium, though the computer’s not sure on that one.”

COS, playing science officer now :)

“Always could use duranium and dilithum. So they might have something worth trading for. ” Marius had learned that people were suspicious of someone who would give away things and ask for nothing.

Dagen looked at the result of the scans. That would be tricky too. They wouldn’t want to give them the idea we only wanted their resources. But that was what diplomats were for in working out deals that made everyone happy. First contacts. Nerve wracking but not unlike a war. It was always harder after the battle to sort things out. He was getting hungry. Looking around he saw that things were fairly calm.

=^= Sandwich. Bajoran kel-butter and … marmalade. =^= A Bolian had initiated him to this mix on OP42. It looked horrible but the tastes were, to him, exquisite. At least for a sandwich. Making his way back he set the plate down on the top of the console and scanned the logs. It was about this time in any kind of mission that things tended to go wrong.

Then the sensors detected a small craft that originated from the planet, travelling at Warp 1 from the main planet towards the Merry. There were four life signs on board. The craft had two projectile weapons but it could not hurt the Genesis.

“Commander a small craft had just left the planet and is headed to the Merrimack. Two projectile weapons aboard. I recommend moving closer using our shields as a bubble to protect the ship along with the away team.”

Calvin looked at the screen for a moment. “Go to yellow alert. This may be a scheduled visit for them. And find out a way to disrupt their warp fields… without firing on them.”

Dagen nodded. Disrupting a warp field on the sly was not something that was easy to do. The ship could do it themselves via their computer, and they could run into internal issues with their emitters. The fact that they had a small craft that was warp capable was impressive. Even into the Kirk era - the era of Thor’s first host - they didn’t have shuttles warp capable. Anything he thought of was more overt than covert, and even the idea of hacking their computers would in time be detected. That could certainly not be good diplomatically. It was likely nothing and they were being a little paranoid. But, that said, he bent to the task. “Sir, we might be able to hack their computers and put in a bug to mess with their propulsion. That is more science than engineering, though. I’d need help on that. Anything else that I can think of would be more .. overt and obvious.”

“Raise the Merry on Comms.”

When that was done, =^=This is commander Marius, We’ve detected a speed of light craft coming from your homeworld on an intercept course. Please advise.=^=

Thomas looked at the craft. Some sort of shuttle, clearly. If it was from the Pallas homeworld, probably a team of diplomats to take over the First Contact from Clogtho and the military.

And as lightly armed as it was, it was about as dangerous to the Genny as a micro-meteor.

The voice over the other end sounded surprised. =/\=This is the Merry. Yes, we are expecting a delegation from our home planet. Thank you. We are expecting it between 3 and 4 hours. Thank you for informing us that they are on their way.=/\=

They didn’t know that it was on its way? They must not be looking. Inwardly he shrugged and added the small craft onto the main view screen as it crept its way toward the ‘Merry’. As a thought he said, “Sir, just in case any missiles get fired, shall we have phasers on standby for pinpoint targeting?”

OOC: Actually, I posted their response to show that the sensitivity of their sensors (they call them ‘detectors’). They were able to detect the Genesis quite a way off but they were not able to detect the small craft nearer to their position. Why? :)
