When the shuttle entered the Merry and the doors opened, the Merry began to use various methods to scan the Genesis. They were using gamma rays and x-rays, ultraviolet and infrared spectrums. Their technology were not very advanced and they were only to scan the Genesis only when the Genesis stopped and was at this close range.
GMThere had yet to be a report in regard to the ‘low’ tech scanning methods. Even if he did know it was occurring Marius would not begrudge them a little peek. He certainly would be curious if the positions were reversed and he certainly was planning on doing a far better job on the Merry than Merry was doing on them.
XO
Dagen was looking at the XO and wondering what it was that the man was thinking. Everything was going fine so far, he thought. Casually he looked at the ships in the area. Their communications systems were fairly low tech. They could easily piggy back onto them to see what kinds of chatter was happening between the Merry and their home world. That was not a friendly thing to do, though, and could be frowned upon. Still, he looked at the communication ‘levels’ that were happening. If anything was going to go South the comms chatter would spike. He flagged the system to alert him if that did happen.
Otherwise if they got too nosy they could activate force fields on the shuttle. That wouldn’t stop scans but would mess with the readings.
-Dagen, CEThomas was monitoring the commbadge as the Captain greeted the alien Admiral. So far, it looked like things were going swimmingly.
COS
“Keep the ships on tactical. They might reveal their intentions by their ship movements.” They had to know the Genesis had the advantage they would be defensive and cautious and try to maximize any advantage they thought they had.
XO
The Merry began to focus their scans on the Genesis’s warp engine.
GM
Dagen’s panel bleeped. He smiled. ‘Took them long enough,’ he said quietly. He’d have been all over them a lot sooner were he there. “Sir, they’ve got eyes on our engines. They’re just scanning right now. ” His fingers moved on the console, doing a screen on screen on the main viewer. The main screen had the area of space with their ships on them with a small info-bubble of speed, direction and status. The small screen had the Merry on it.
What could they tell from their scans? They weren’t precisely the most advanced sensors. They could likely bring it down to a ‘rough’ idea of the propulsion style. Were they to join the Federation they could gain more information simply by being allied. But they didn’t know that and like him, wanted to know more about this strange ship that came a knocking.
- DagenThe Pallasian sensors took quite a while to finish what they wanted to see. Then they moved to the deflector shield.
GM
“Get readings on their sensors, I want a way to jam them completely. Be a nice surprise if we want to play rough. As long as they aren’t getting enough to reproduce our tech, we can let them look a little. If they get too nosey we might have to fill their sensors with a little static.”
xO
“They’re changing focus. Moving on to have a peek at the shields. I wonder if they even know what it is - emitters on the hull. Not a lot of signage to read to say ‘hey, here there be pretty nifty shield tech’.” He let the one console stay where it was and swung to the next one in line. Activating it he tapped away for several moments. “Isolating their sensor tech in our scans.” A paused, waiting for the data to come up. “I would wager that we could foil them by activating shields. And really mess with them with the multiphasic shields. If it is basic radar we could likely simply emit a counter wave pattern to nullify their own waves. I’d say that with our sensors and computer speed we could scan any modulations they had and adjust ours accordingly to keep ahead of them. Just thinking aloud there though, sir. Will know better when I get specific results.”
- Dagen, CE“Shall I raise shields?”
Park, BO Tactical/Security
“We’re here to be friendly… it would be unfriendly to raise the shields without provocation…” Marius didn’t like giving anyone a tactical advantage, but he had his ‘orders’ do be … well… himself. “So lets be friendly.”
Their sensors were only able to retrieve what the structure was but they had no special sensors to determine substances or elements instantaneously. Of course, by calculation, they could guess the material of some of the components, but they weren’t expert enough to determine the materials that they had never encountered before. The only problem is that the Genesis had no way of knowing yet, what materials they have already discovered or invented.
GM
“Pretty basic sensor package there, sir,” Dagen replied after a time. It was kinda nice not having some alien roll in and suck out all their computer data in a nanosecond. “Wouldn’t hurt for them to have a look as it stands. If we energize shields they will know for certain what the emitters do. We can keep them guessing by not activating much. ” He looked to the screen at the ships there. He wasn’t thinking in the line of a battle as much as imagining what it would be like to be on one of them. To them that was the height of their tech. To Dagen it was flying by the seat of their pants. Inwardly he felt that must be terribly exciting.
- Dagen, CE“Well, we can deduce that they haven’t discovered duranium yet, based on the composition of their hulls,” Thomas said. “Have our scans got an idea of the mineral composition of the system?”
For instance, if there wasn’t a dilithium deposit anywhere in the system, that could explain their lack of a “modern” warp core; they wouldn’t have thought to use something they didn’t know existed to catalyze a matter/antimatter reaction, after all.
COS
Marius growled a little… “I’ve had enough of this… lets give them a little interference burst - an inverse wave to their scanners… a couple of seconds… kind of like a ‘my eyes are up here’ message when someone’s looking down your blouse.”
XO
“Two seconds inverse waves Aye Sir!” Ben inputed the correct information to the computer on his station. Ben discretely sent a message to Dagen station “Dagen what does that mean? I’ve not heard that term before”
Park
Dagen sent back the frequency of the wave pattern with a small stutter as if to ‘wink’ at them as they did it over to Park. Just in case Ben was meaning the second he sent a message back, ‘Means it’s okay to look at us - just not to look too long at the assets’.
He thought that the supposition of the duranium and dilithium was sound, though what they had was a matter of three hundred years of advances on top of other advances before it. They were just starting out. Still, if one had the building blocks they could do a lot. If they were in time able to join the Federation then they would be able to ‘trade up’ as it were.
- Dagen, CEIt took about 45 seconds to elapse before the scans were shut off on the Pallasian side. It was probable they did not really know what the inverse wave meant and took them that long to figure out that the wave was sent intentionally from the Genesis.
GM
Marius shook his head. Different races had different means of communication. There were some races that would be offended that they let them scan their ship for so long. Taking it as an insult that the Federation wasn’t more concerned about their prying eyes. As with many first contacts you never knew what was going to be the wrong thing to do or say. Hence why Marius was more than happy that Julien went instead of him.
Marius.
“I think that they figured out we figured that they were taking a peek,” Dagen said, examining the results and what the ship was doing, or , in this case, not doing. Dagen let out a small grin. “Sir, we could play a game with them to show them no hard feelings with the sensors. We could use Morse code with their alphabet and use their own radar wavelengths to send the pulses to them, then after that, communicate with words.” Knowing that the XO was not precisely a ‘fun’ guy on shift, he didn’t think it would go far, but couldn’t hurt to try.
- Dagen, CE
Thomas slowly made his way over to one of the aux science consoles, looking at the data the Genny had recorded on the system itself… specifically the composition of the planets, moons and asteroids. He wanted to see if his supposition about a lack of dilithium was borne out by the facts.
