“Parents are always so hard to please,” Valleea said with a sigh before finishing off her glass. She eyed the bottle for a moment, thought about the potential consequences and decided she’d deal with them. She poured another glass. She just wouldn’t be able to be on call tonight, it was as simple as that.
Picking up the glass, Valleea eyed the colour of the liquid as the lounge lights moved through it. “They had my life pretty much planned out. I was going to get a good education and join a respected profession, then I’d marry very well in a way befitting someone of my social station. We’d have children and then repeat the pattern and pass all the expectations of centuries of nobility onto them. No care about whether they wanted any of it, or even cared.” She peered beyond the glass at Marishka. “It was amazing they even let me study off-world, away from their control. My goodness, I mean what would they do with a daughter with a mind of their own? Appalling thought, that.”

Marishka took another look at the woman across the table. She hadn’t quite realized she was sitting with a noble woman. Perhaps she should study people’s files a little more carefully but that would take all the fun out of getting to know them.
“I believe they call your daring escape ‘breaking the wheel’ or something like that. I believe a lot of parents like to relive their lives through their children’s. My father must be enjoying his right now. My brother K’Ton is doing quite well. As for my mother, I doubt she’ll ever have another child which is probably just as well. Do you have any siblings?” Marishka asked.

The Kriosian shook her head. “No, which is why I think they take my errant ways so poorly.I’ve embarrassed them to all of Kriosian society Marishka. We’re related, if distantly, to the first Monarch. First, I tried to bypass their wishes for a suitable husband by choosing A Valtese man of lower societal standing, and then when that all fell through I joined Starfleet. Even if I could go home, I’m pretty sure I couldn’t go anywhere on the planet without someone gossiping about me.” She tried to sound stoic, but the underlying sadness was there. As much as she didn’t want to, she missed home and no amount of amazing places she could visit could change that feeling. And at the moment she felt content to down that feeling slightly in the alcohol they were drinking.

Marishka smiled again.
“Oh let them gossip. What is is about suffering slings and arrows or something? The only way you are going to be anything in this life is by being true to yourself. You probably saw that from an early age. I’m sorry no-one else from your family saw it with you.” she said thinking of Olena.
