Julien had stood up upon the Admiral’s answer, clasping both hands behind his back, but Riley could feel his excitement and at the same time also some doubt.

He nodded to all their comments, all very valid considerations and took the time to think on it for a few seconds.

=^= Thank you Admiral, we’re happy to accept your invitation. We’ll just need some time to get our shuttle ready and then we’ll fly over. =^= he said, then made the ‘cut-the-line’ sign to Marishka and she could see a flash of boyish excitment in his eye.

Sensors showed that there was movement in the Merry. At the same time, the sensors also indicated the most possible place for the runabout to enter the Admiral’s ship. There was a large space at the bottom of the ship and there were equipment to remove air and reintroduce an atmosphere into the space. There was a door in the front of the ship.

“All right, we’ll do this to the book ladies and gentleman. Lieutenants Dekker, Brennan, Michaels and Marishka, you’re with me. Cmdr. Marius, you have the bridge. We’ll take the runabout and if anything should go awry, Lt. McGregor, you’ll take the Normandy out with Ensign Aevin for additional firepower from a different trajectory. They won’t know we have another ship here with superior firepower.”

Thomas nodded, looking at the helmsman. ‘Well, he can fly it, I’ll operate the weapons systems,’ he thought. He’d talk to Dagen about getting the fighter put on hot standby once the Captain left the Bridge.

He walked over to Marius and locked eyes with him. “This is a peaceful first contact mission until we have a definite proof of it being anything else, is that clear Commander?” he asked in a kind voice.

“Crystal.” He rubbed his hand over the back over the Captain’s chair, waiting until Julien left the bridge before he would sit in it.

Leaving the ex-COS and the COS in charge made Julien feel a tad bit apprehensive, he knew Calvin too well. This would be the first situation where his XO had to be peaceful and diplomatic. He looked pointedly over at Dagen, who was the most level-headed senior officer left behind. “I rely on you to keep us safe and make this one for the history books of peaceful first contact.” he said.

OOC: I’m hurt, Jules! Thomas is very level-headed!
OOC: I know, but it will be the first time that two (ex) COS are in charge of the ship :)

“We’ll keep an eye out, Captain,” Dagen said. It wasn’t exactly a ‘mission’ for an engineer but he still felt a little left out. It would have been amazing to be in a ship as technologically low as theirs and to get a peek at their drives. How did they have their set up? Still, it was a first contact, not an engineering field trip and anything like that could come at another time and another encounter. In the meantime he would work with the security group to get a comprehensive make on their ships and abilities and to anticipate potential issues.
- Dagen, CE

Riley felt the thrill of excitement move up his spine. He’d expected to be part of the away team. It was standard procedure to have the ship’s counselor, especially if he was an empath, on such a mission, but nothing was certain with Julien. The Captain liked to think outside the box and it was never a given how he would approach a situation.

He looked toward David, trying to search out the man’s reaction. He’d felt an apprehensiveness from him earlier and now Julien was pulling him more deeply into contact with this mysterious race. He wanted to know if it piqued the man’s anxiety.

Dekker, CNS

David was certainly anxious, but it would be difficult to tell exactly what was causing it. David’s eyes met Riley’s and his lips curled up into somewhat of a playful smile. That alone would make his lover want to get inside his head even more.

Sage smiled at hearing her name for the away team, then looked over at Calvin. He’d behave himself, she knew that, so why all the concern from Julien? She had every faith in her husband—besides, he wouldn’t blow up the Merry with her on it. Right? Right. She stepped closer and lay a hand on his shoulder, gave it silent squeeze and headed for the turbolift.

The sensors showed that there was a large space for smaller craft on the top of the Merry. As there was no forcefield like the entrances to Starfleet shuttle bays, there was a mechanism to open up the top and then closing. There were mechanisms to drain air from the space as well as reintroduce a breathable atmosphere into the closed chamber.
GM
“Remember the Captain is half metal… so if things go sideways, hide behind him.” Marius said with a slight chuckle, it was mostly a joke.. mostly.

Marius

As he walked past and overheard Marius’ comment, David rolled his eyes. What a louse. He was glad Julien was leaving him behind.

IC: As the designated Away Team headed off the bridge, Thomas cleared his throat.

“Captain, may I advise sending at least two Security officers with you to guard the shuttle?” he asked. Between Marishka and the Captain, he was sure the delegation itself didn’t need any extra defense, but the shuttle was a different story. It would help keep nosy engineers from trying to pick apart its systems while the delegation was away, as well.

COS

Julien gave Thomas a look and nodded. “Ok, but only for guarding the shuttle.” he agreed.

Thomas nodded, and relayed the order for two NEs to report to the Shuttlebay to accompany the away team, then guard the shuttle during their meeting and prevent Federation technology from being analyzed by the younger species.

Marishka finished handing the station over to an NE and fell in with the others on the away team. She was very pleased to be going. New races always piqued her interest. Perhaps it was some of her old Intel paranoia but there was something about this race. Oh well, all will be as it should.

  • Marishka, CIO

David had already turned over the main science station to an NE, having sent a message for one of his more senior science officers to come to the Bridge and take over. He had noted the opening to the large airlock in the other ship and forwarded the coordinates to the shuttle’s navigation system.

Standing next to Marishka, he leaned in and whispered in her ear. “Keep your eyes open.” It was short, if cryptic message.

-David Michaels, CSO

Marishka looked David in the eye and studied his expression. She wanted to remember it in case there was a next time. Nodding, she turned away. If David could say more she knew he would have.

Marishka, CIO

Aevin got up from his station and signaled for an NE to take his place. He walked up to the Captain. “Sir. Do you want us cloaked and out with you, or on standby?” And then he whispered “Sir, what is it going to take for you to trust me? I don’t need a babysitter.“

Ensign Aevin, Pilot

Julien raised his eyebrows and gave Aevin a quizzical look. “I do trust you but an away team should always have at least two people, you know that.” he said silently, and then louder “On standby, let’s see how the situation develops, I hope we won’t need an ace in our sleeve.” he said.

Then he and the away team left the bridge for the shuttle bay.

  • Julien King, CO

OOC: Kenson pls kindly start the thread and put us all into the shuttle when you’re ready. Thanks.

COS

“See if we can keep the Comm badges open. I’d love to keep an ear out of what is going on. We can also use the main computer’s processing power to try to decipher if there some cultural deviations in their language that the translators can’t pick up without the addition support.”

Marius XO

Dagen replied, “Sir, at least one could have a passive open linked channel to the shuttle’s comms. Comm badges only range to 500 kilometers so they would be hopelessly out of range, but if we link them to the shuttle which would be close range, the shuttle comms could relay anything to the Genesis from there. Given that the shuttle will be manned that should not be an issue to monitor and maintain.” Provided the shielding on their ship wasn’t too tight, that is. But that was a bridge to cross when they came to it.
- Dagen, CE

“Well, do some of that Engineering stuff and make it happen.”

Marius XO

“Well Commander looks like you’re stuck with me Sir.” Ben smiled and slightly chuckled at the comment under his breath. Ben coughed and had his fingers on the away team’s signal in case for emergency beam out. “Also I have the away team’s signal in case we need to beam them out directly Sir.”
