snipped.~Ensign Winston Greiss, Engineer
In the corner workstation, one of the scientists stood out a little more than usual. Mostly it was the cowboy hat he wore when he could get away with it. At least he wore his duty boots after being chewed out about the cowboy boots enough over the years. Though, Marsh was pretty easy going, so it usually wasn’t him doing the nitpicking about regulations. Tipping his hat up, he peered at the new ensign curiously. “Hey, Newbie,” Clint said with a heavy trace of a drawl in his voice. “Watcha up to?”
~Ensign Clint Marshall
Winston turned to face Clint, eyes wide with anxiety. “Nothing. At least nothing that would interest you. Boring engineer stuff!” He faked a yawn and shifted into an uninterested expression. He tried his hardest to make it seem as if he was actively using the device, rather than disassembling it for components. As Greiss leaned over to carefully pry at a panel, a glimpse could be caught of his box. From Clint’s distance, it was possible to make out the presence of a beige box with a glass panel on the front, a small plastic console with worn buttons, and a large stack of black tape-based video cartridges.

Now, Clint Marshall was often on the wrong sides of many conversations and he wasn’t a man of ambitions, but he was pretty smart and had good instincts. Turning on his stool, his feet in the floor and he rose in a smooth motion. Engineers didn’t hang out in the science labs for no reason, and in fact they tended to have their own spaces, so now his attention was focused on the slightly sketchy behaviour of the other ensign.
Marshall moved over to Griess and slid folded arms on the table, leaning on the top and gazing at him at an angle, his face partly obscured by the cowboy hat. “What are we playing with today? I’m always down for a little build and rebuild.” Not his speciality in the least, but it was true he liked to tinker on occasion.
~Ensign Clint Marshall
The lanky man made a frantic motion to cover up the box as he saw Clint approach closer. In doing this, Greiss’s tight grip wrenched out the panel that he was dismantling. The chunk of metal and wires was just inches from hitting the ground when Winston’s fingertips slightly coerced the item to fall into his hands. Springing back up, he tossed it into the box with speed and vigor.
He stared dead into Clint’s eyes, or where he assumed them to be under that hat of his.
“As far as you are concerned,” He said with his voice lowered, “I was never here. Do not bother investigating and following me, or, or.....” He paused, unable to make up a threat on the fly. “Or something very not cool or favorable might happen to you.” He clutched the box tightly. “Now if you’ll excuse me, I have a great many things to not do.”~Ensign Winston Greiss, Engineer.
Now, Clint might have bene one of the most laid back and easy going of the entire science department, but he knew a cagey person when he saw one and people behaving oddly in a departmental space that was not their own certainly was going to draw a lot of attention. Holding his arm out, Marshall blocked the engineer’s path. “Sorry, newbie, not so fast. I might not outrank you but I do have seniority. Why don’cha have a seat and tell me what all the fuss is about and if the answer is satisfactory, then perhaps we won’t have to involve any of the uppers.
