Greiss straightened out his new uniform as he stood in the turbolift that led to main engineering. At last he thought. Ensign! I can’t believe it.
4 years of tireless study and a month or so on a training ship had really flown by. Now he had reached his goal, for now, at least. His intention now would be to meet the chief of engineering, a figure that he could be taking orders from years down the line. As important as this first impression was to Greiss, he didn’t feel as nervous as he usually did when meeting a superior. Greiss sighed at himself as he realized his folly of getting wrapped up in his thoughts, and watched as the turbolift doors opened up.

In main engineering, things were hopping as usual. A average height Bajoran woman could be seen running diagnostics on a section of the secondary systems that were being incredibly difficult at the moment. Another engineer saw Greiss enter and assumed that he was new and pointed to the Bajoran “Chief, new blood’s here.” He said “I’m NE Breakneck. Welcome to the Europa.” He said “That’s the chief. She can be a bit difficult at times. But she is good at her job and she expects us to do our best.” Breakneck rambled for a minute until Mattie walked over

“Ensign Greiss, we’ve been expecting you. Let’s go to my office and we can talk. Breakneck get that coupling on Deck 4 section 12 replaced and that should take care of the secondary power issues we seem to be having at this moment.” She ordered as she led the way to her office and moved a stack of PaDDs from the other chair “Drink?”

“Just a water, that’s all.” He pulled a PaDD and slid it onto the desk. On it was paragraphs upon paragraphs of small text arranged in a neat, yet condensed fashion. “If you haven’t already, I’d really appreciate if you read my qualification and academy course record. You’ll find I’m quite capable with many ship systems.” He paused to fiddle with his hands for a moment, and continued. “If you don’t mind me asking, what’s our maximum warp factor?”

Mattie returned with a glass of water “I will indeed read over your qualifications and academy course record.” She said “Good to know you are versatile. That is always a big plus on a star ship.” She sat back down at her desk “We can sustain warp 9.8 for 12 hours.” She said “We try not to push her beyond that, we don’t want to damage the warp engine.” She said leaning back in her chair “What made you join Star Fleet?”

Greiss straightened his hair as he responded. “As a kid I always admired the bravery of Starfleet officers, hearing the stories about the war. I just felt that it was an honest and right way to use my skills in engineering. I’ve always been a tinkerer, but what intrigues me is large scale system configuration and maintenance.” He tilted his head with a knowing air as he spoke again “Of course, I am well aware that I’m just an ensign, and I’ll be relegated to busywork, but I’d think that if given the chance to demonstrate my talents over large scale projects, I could prove to be quite capable.”

Mattie looked at Greiss “No one just gets busy work around here. Everyone gets assigned to projects as they come up.” She said “So don’t worry you will get your chance to expand your skills and show us what you can do. ” She said as she picked up a data padd from her desk “In fact, here you go, your first assignment. I need you to work out a plan to upgrade the secondary computer core. ” She said “You have to coordinate what we need to do before we update anything and get me a schedule. You’ll be the project lead.” She said looking at Greiss “Think you’re up to it?”
