Ashlyn saw that her lack of self control for attraction wasn’t helping this at all, she needed to get back in control or this whole meeting would spiral away from her. She closed her eyes and took a deep breath, forced her neutral mask back in place and pulled back against her less professional interests. Another deep breath and she exerted as much control as she could muster before opening her eyes again. The young ensign was stiff and uncomfortable, but to her this was better than where things were going just a moment ago. “I was assigned to the third shift under Ensign Bough. During my regular patrols I engaged in intruder responses, emergency fire alarms, decompression warnings, critical power failures and other such alarms. They were discovered to be the result of a prank caused by a few Engineering cadets that had gotten drunk at a recent birthday party. Further investigation showed the parents of the cadet celebrating his day of birth had brought onboard some celebratory alcohol under the condition that any left over was to be removed from the ship. They forgot and the alcohol had been circulating the ship resulting in several incidents that we had to respond to. Eventually the crate of Andorian Ale had been located and confiscated.”
“Fun times,” Abrams said witha grin. What part was the fun side, she left vague. Trenton didn’t know her well enough yet to know her personality, but Cassidy was happy to socialize and party (lightly), but quick to keep things from escalating when she could. She was a free spirit in comes ways who understood restraint.
Trenton placed a PaDD in front of Lieutenant Abrams, detailing everything she was discussing. The PaDD was clearly a note book to organize the thoughts, observations, and details of any situation encountered for reports later. “There were a few jealousy fights that had to be sorted out, no one got hurt but it was an issue for a while. I was also asked to lead weapons training for other cadets in all sections.” Later in the notes are references to system limitations and tactical notes for counter boarding operations.

Security, USS Europa“And what was the most important thing you think you learned on the Challenger,” the COS asked, tilting her head slightly as she appraised her new (possibly troublemaking) ensign.
Abrams, COS
Ashlyn took a moment to really think about this, there were a lot of lessons she learned on the previous ship but she had to pick out the most important. She thought back to her time on the Challenger, through her hardest trials and what about them made it so difficult. How had she overcome the troubles she encountered while on shift? There was only one logical answer she could give, but it was going to sound horrible no matter how she explained it. “Trust. I learned to trust. One of the biggest struggles I had since going to Earth was getting myself to trust people rather than being overly cautious around them. My time on the Challenger was met with the same hurdles that I had to face then. I was surrounded by Federation personnel, on a Federation ship, deep inside Federation Space, and I still couldn’t bring myself to trust the people around me. There were still too many fresh wounds from the competitive nature of others in the Academy and before when I was growing up on Makoa III. It was filled with back alley deals and back stabbing all to get ahead. So when I got to the Academy Cruise, I didn’t trust anyone, and that forced me onto the back foot pretty hard. I had to learn to let go of that suspicion and understand that I could trust those I worked on ship with. That just because life has been a competition for survival didn’t mean it was always like that. Years of survival instinct and self preservation made it hard to let go of the suspicion which was so much easier. Honestly it was thanks to Sharah that I learned it was okay to trust. Unfortunately, the lack of had already done a lot of harm. My relationship with my previous department head was pretty strained and our parting was…civil.” Trenton maintained her neutral mask, even though it was clear she didn’t want to.

Security, USS EuropaCassidy said nothing for a moment but then nodded slowly. For the time being she didn’t think it necessary to drag out details about her interactions with her department head (though she herself was feeling on edge with Trenton), and wanted the ensign to focus on what was next. “And now you’re here. Where trust, especially of each other in this department is essential. Or people could die or harm could come to them,” she said matter-of-factly. But Cassidy’s expression warmed slightly. “But you’re not the first to come to this ship uncertain how to begin and how to let the past remain there,” she said as she thought of her best friend Vora. “Lot of people have to overcome different things in order to become the kind of officer they really want to be. All I’m going to ask is that you try, and I think you’ll find that people might surprise you.”
Abrams, COS
Ashlyn chuckled a bit, “As long as it’s the kind of surprise that makes me go ‘Huh, neat’ and not the kind that results in accidental broken noses and really long apology letters.” Now that Ashlyn seemed to have shaken herself free of the sudden attraction to the department head, she took a moment to really look around the office and get a feel for the kind of person she was. “So I remember reading that you majored in Botony and Exobiology and it got me curious about how you use both for Security? My own majors are pretty self-explanatory, info security and culture help with gaining new information and protecting it while not offending the dignitaries that I’m assigned to protect. It puts me into a good position to lean toward diplomatic roles if Starfleet Intelligence doesn’t work out.”
