“Wow, that’s… random. Are you very familiar with many of the events from that time?” she asked curiously, snuggling into him a bit. It was rare that she stayed at his place, since because of Jerrin, she normally had to leave after awhile. But as her son got a little bit older and more responsible, they had come to an understanding about some things and he seemed to be comfortable enough with Johann that she could spend the odd night here and there away from her own quarters. After all, she was also just a comm call away.

“Yes, actually,” he said. “I always liked history. And that period was a very decisive one in human history. Also in my family’s history. Several of my ancestors ended up, um… migrating… as a result of how that whole thing turned out. If it played out differently I probably wouldn’t have even been born.” A part of him wondered whether he should actually talk about all of that stuff now or not, but the thought didn’t linger as his mind kept working.

“Well then, I guess I can say I’m just grateful that things worked out the way they did,” Vora said with a grin, running a hand down his arm. Indeed, a lot of the craziness of her life had become rather less-crazy since he had entered her life.

He was still staring at the ceiling, trying to make sense of what happened in his dream. Whatever it was very strange. He was also oblivious to all of the physical contact that was going on along his arm.

“But none of that explains what a cocktail waitress was doing there.”

– Johann Dvorak, CO

Vora just laughed. “Nobody said dreams were ever rational.” She leaned in a bit and smirked. “I hope you tipped her well.”

“I don’t think I settled the bill,” he said. “Right after that I apparently gave some other man the opportunity to push down on a plunger, and it blew up everything. Like, everything. Like everything east of the Rhine. I think it was the Rhine. I don’t actually know because I saw nothing but Allied tanks crossing the bridge. But that was at the beginning. I woke up after the giant fireball.”

“Right,” Vora commented with a slight nod, or at least as much of one as she could with her head on the pillow.

His implants shifted finally to look into her maroon eyes again. “I appreciate you putting up with all of this.”

– Johann Dvorak, CO

“I think we can call it a fair exchange,” she replied with a grin. “Kind of novel that it’s not just me,” Vora teased further. She was teasing, of course, but there was a partial serious element to her train of thought. They had touched on the subject of what would be ‘too much’ before, and had determined he had not reached that point with her. A part of her wondered if there was no such thing with Johann Dvorak and if that was the case, she felt deeply grateful. They had something good here, and special, and while she knew things wouldn’t always be this seemingly perfect, she liked to think that there was something about them that the other needed, even if they didn’t always know what that was. Though at the risk of going down trains of thought that would lead her to dangerous topics (at least for her some days), she made an effort to shift her thoughts away from their relationship.
