Okay, back to more neutral territory. Good. She leaned back in her seat slightly. “Well, everyone does a rotation in every position. With new members of the team, I’m going to test you out in different roles and see what fits best. I like to keep the shifts balanced,” Cass said simply, her tone utterly professional, though she was careful not to be rigid. “But let me toss it back to you. What is is that you expect as a junior officer on your first posting out of the Academy?”

Trenton chuckles lightly, “Weekly borg encounters, science officers that smuggle contraband on board for the sake of SCIENCE!, medical officers hawking narcotics to the senior staff, and Security taking bribes. What about the Engineers? I hear you asking. Well, they keep the ship afloat and us from dying so you know they’re the top of this pyramid of I must be joking. I’m not really that cynical.” Trenton takes a moment to catch her breath after a round of laughter, mostly to unwind the tension within herself. “In all honesty, I’m expecting to learn more now than I did on the Challenger. A chance to better refine my skills toward my goal of being accepted into Starfleet Intelligence as either Investigations or Internal Affairs. I mean, let’s be honest, the most exciting use of my investigative skills on the Challenger was figuring out which parent sent their kid a crate of Andorian Ale disguised as phaser parts. I’m looking forward to being a part of something deeper or more impactful. Also, because this is a science vessel, I’m looking forward to learning new things I haven’t considered yet. I currently have my degree in InfoSec with a minor in Alien Cultures and would like to expand that further.”

Ahh, finally something concrete. Cassidy found herself nodding. Cadet cruises weren’t really mean to test everything. They were a taste of life in space and a chance to weed out those who could ace a class, but couldn’t handle the everyday practicalities that were needed to not only be in Starfleet, but also excel. But she was also aware that not everyone started with or cared about ambition. There was more to life than what came next. Direction was good; strict adherence to a set path was not.

Trenton stops herself for a moment, “Sorry, I was rambling to distract myself from the long list of…other thoughts I’m dealing with.” She tapped her forehead, “Active mind.”

Abrams smiled lightly. “It happens. And there’s a lot to be thinking about in these first days aboard. But I will caution you that observance is a security officers most valued skills. Don’t let yourself become too distracted that you miss what’s happening around you.”

Trenton shook her head clear of her thoughts, “Yes, of course. I promise I’m not usually this bad. In most cases, I would have come in paranoid and suspicious of everyone, so this is an incredibly good day if a little doe-eyed and love-struck.” There was a long pause before Trenton convincingly slapped herself hard enough to shift herself in the seat. “Yeah, okay, shouldn’t have said that. Only minor regrets. Moving on, how do you do the shift schedule on the ship? Three shifts of ten, four of eight?”

Oh boy, she had her work cut out here. It was clear the ensign either was terrible with boundaries or had not had people enforcing them particularly well. But she would learn and Cassidy would have to be firm. “We do the standard four of eight, unless there are extenuating circumstances that require us to do longer shifts. I do a biweekly shift schedule but with an overall monthly rotation that keeps people from getting too bored.”

Cassidy folded her arms on her desk, doing her best to seem firm but casual. “What sort of things were you doing on your shifts during your cadet cruise?”

Ashlyn saw that her lack of self control for attraction wasn’t helping this at all, she needed to get back in control or this whole meeting would spiral away from her. She closed her eyes and took a deep breath, forced her neutral mask back in place and pulled back against her less professional interests. Another deep breath and she exerted as much control as she could muster before opening her eyes again. The young ensign was stiff and uncomfortable, but to her this was better than where things were going just a moment ago. “I was assigned to the third shift under Ensign Bough. During my regular patrols I engaged in intruder responses, emergency fire alarms, decompression warnings, critical power failures and other such alarms. They were discovered to be the result of a prank caused by a few Engineering cadets that had gotten drunk at a recent birthday party. Further investigation showed the parents of the cadet celebrating his day of birth had brought onboard some celebratory alcohol under the condition that any left over was to be removed from the ship. They forgot and the alcohol had been circulating the ship resulting in several incidents that we had to respond to. Eventually the crate of Andorian Ale had been located and confiscated.”

Trenton placed a PaDD in front of Lieutenant Abrams, detailing everything she was discussing. The PaDD was clearly a note book to organize the thoughts, observations, and details of any situation encountered for reports later. “There were a few jealousy fights that had to be sorted out, no one got hurt but it was an issue for a while. I was also asked to lead weapons training for other cadets in all sections.” Later in the notes are references to system limitations and tactical notes for counter boarding operations.
