It had been a very long first day. The shuttle had arrived late last night and Sharah had been up early to get started on her check-ins. Most everything was a blur. The only easy thing about the day had been finding everything. Two discovery class ships in a row–she was pretty sure that was a fluke of Star Fleet planning. Sharah was done for the day, but she just didn’t feel like going back to sit in her quarters. She didn’t feel like a huge press of people to deal with either. She took a deep breath and sucked it up. She headed for the mess hall. She wasn’t going to figure out the mental ocean of Europa if she didn’t make the effort. She entered the mess hall and joined the line for food. She choose grilled cheese and ice water. She took her tray and choose a table along the wall near the door. Contingency plans: If it got to be too much she could quietly leave. There weren’t a lot of people there yet, but it was filling up as other crew members came in to eat either after their shift or before. She ate slowly analyzing the ebb and flow of the thoughts and feelings around her and carefully working her way to a point where she could hear it, but ignore the specifics.
After awhile she opened the chess program on her PaDD, using the game as a focus to help her continue to mentally maneuver the room.Ensign Fayth, Doctor
As more people filtered in, seating as becoming more sparse. Conversations ebbed and flowed and soon there was one happening right next to Fayth, the words clearly in another language and being translated by the Universal Translator.
“Well, you might as well just go get started with the one assignment and then you can move onto other things.”
“Do I have to?”
“If you want to move on to the next portion. It’s far more exciting, trust me.”
“Fine…”Movement ensued and all of a sudden the ensigns’s water glass was accidentally tapped. A pale yellow hand reached out reflexively and managed to stop it from falling over, though it did splash slightly. The yellow hand belonged to a woman who was quite a bit taller than Sharah and she towered over the seated doctor. The woman had vibrant cherry coloured hair and intense maroon irises. She wore the teal uniform of sciences and one solid and one hollow pip.
Beside her was another person (possibly male) who was likely of the same species, though their colouring was darker. The eyes were the same and they were slightly shorter than the woman and dressed in civilian clothes. Slightly wide eyed, their expression shifted to embarrassment. “Sorry,” he muttered.
“Yes, sorry about that. Jerrin tends to forget not to wave his hands about when talking,” she said, switching to Federation Standard out of habit.
“And where do you think I get that from?” Jerrin said with raised eyebrows.
“Yes, well, mindfulness,” she said before focusing on Fayth. “We didn’t damage anything, did we?”

Sharah startled a bit. She’s been paying attention to the mental noise and not the physical and was caught of guard. Why did that ALWAYS happen when she was in the mess hall. Oh well the woman said it, mindfulness. Hadn’t Joseph talked about that on end too? “Oh no, nothing damaged.” Sharah used a napkin to pick up the spill. “I’m Sharah Fayth, one of the new doctors.” She held out her hand to the woman. Alright Sharah don’t act crazy, surf above the room and make some friends, and stop giving yourself peptalks. “Care to join me?” She waved at the other chairs around her table.
En. Fayth, Doctor
After so long in the Federation, shaking hands was not unusual a greeting for her but Vora still had to think about it. There was only a brief moment of hesitation before she took Fayth’s hand and gave it a firm shake. “I’m Vora Zorell, and this”-she gestured with her head to the one beside her-“is my son, Jerrin.”
Jerrin just gave a nod of greeting.
Vora gave the doctor a smile. “I’d be happy to join you but I think Jerrin is heading off to do studies, yes?” she said, querying her son.
“Yeah. Gotta go,” Jerrin said. “Bye.” And with that, he took off.
Vora just looked amused and startled chuckling. “He’s a boy of many words, clearly,” she joked. “I’m just going to grab something and I’ll be right back.”
