She considered this for what seemed like a while and then shrugged. “Well, there is a difference between choosing on a selection of cultivated choices given by one’s parents and genuinely choosing something for yourself. You are working on your education yes, but what about beyond that? Maybe you are in a bit of limbo. I think its actually quite normal for someone your age to chafe a bit at where they are and what they do all the time. Perhaps it is time to maybe put your mind to figuring out what you want to do with your life. Your future is not that far away.”

Jerrin snorted. “Yeah,” he said quietly. In truth, he didn’t know what he wanted to do, though there were things that piqued his interest. Some aspects of engineering, for example. But did he want to go to the Academy like his mom? Did he want to go back to Tenra? He had no idea.

She had spent enough time with Jerrin now that surface thoughts were starting to become more than simple emotions. She could almost “hear” words floating through to her. One such was Engineering but with a tinge of questioning and not necessarily Star Fleet. “Well then, perhaps a project for you if you are up for it, is look at options. Familiarize yourself with what is out there. Possibilities might feel a bit endless, so stick with a subject.”

“For example, if you were interested in security, you might do some research on Star Fleet Academy. Or there are several large organizations that are civilian run for anything from a corporation’s security, to planetary defense. Engineering could be something as simple as city infrastructure, construction, or terraforming. There is also Star Fleet Academy and civilian schooling available. Human Resources if you like laws and helping people navigate systems. A wide range of sciences are always interesting. You could start here, taking classes on the holodeck, or choose to attend on site. It is a lot to consider.”

“There is no real right or wrong path. If you find you don’t like something, you can change and study something else. It is what I did. I went from medical science to psychology and psychiatry. So…What subject would you like to choose?”

Jerrin chewed on the inside of his cheek bit. “I like building things, or taking them apart. Or both, ” he said with a shrug. “I like some of the engineering things I’m learning. It might be kind of interesting to learn more,” he said nonchalantly. “And Mom and Johann are getting me to do jobs with the departments, so I know I’ll get to do some stuff there soon too.”
