“Oh, right. Umm, let’s see…”

“Ricktor Prime, huh? Did you actually get to see The Enterprise?”

– Johann Dvorak, CO (except he’s not because this is a parallel universe or whatever… so maybe I should start noting that here in this signature?)

“I saw people from the Enterprise, but I was never on it myself. Far too busy at the surface with the wounded being transported down from multiple sources. I did work on the Captain at one point. He had sustained an injury that required surgery. I remember his injury better than I remember his face, but I think that is a hazard of the job. Have you ever seen it?”

Nox, CNS

Really? he thought. You don’t remember Captain Picard’s face?

“I just missed it,” he said. “Back in ‘78, out in the Maelstrom. I was assigned to Dauntless. Enterprise came to our AO along with half the fleet as that whole mess with those rogue Cardassians flared up. But I never got to see her before our ship was blown to bits. The hospital ship that picked up our escape pods didn’t have very good windows.”

“I got to see Captain Picard though. Just before that he hitched a ride with us to go give a lecture at Biranu Station. Briefly. He got off the turbolift just as I was getting on.”

– The Other Johann Dvorak

“I suppose it seems strange.” She said with a rueful grin. “That I do not remember his face, but I think you will forgive me when I tell you, I was in a complicated surgery on his liver and that I was not the surgeon assigned to him. Normally, I would meet the patient and answer any questions they have, go over the procedure and how it will work… any complications I might have or they might have and all of that. However, Picard was already under when I was brought in to replace the surgeon who had been working on him. Things had… not gone well and the Doctor was not handling the situation with professional decorum. I only knew what his name was because I studied his chart and had the rest read to me while I worked on the botched surgery. I’m afraid I was already gone when he was roused post surgery.”

“Did you get to have a conversation with him or did you act like he wasn’t there?”

Nox, CNS

“It wasn’t a real conversation,” Johann said, as he thought back to the time in question.

“You’re going to have to tell us what’s going on if you find out up there.”
“You mean when he finds out.”
“I doubt I’m going to find out anything.”
“Dude, it’s the Bridge.
“Dude, it’s the night shift. Everything important that happens, happens during the day shift. That’s the way it works everywhere.”

Ensign Dvorak pushed the call button on the turbolift again. It was unusual that it was taking this long for a car to show up, though shifts were currently changing on the Dauntless.

“That really makes no sense how it works out that way.”
“It’s because they plan it that way.”
“Are you serious? Did they like, tell you that?”
“No, they don’t tell me anything. But it’s obvious. The ship always arrives wherever we’re going when the Captain and all the senior officers are awake. Every shift I’ve done up there has been while we were at warp or about to be at warp.”
“We were at warp most of the day today. Maybe this time you’ll do something.”
“Nah, we’re going to warp again soon. I bet we’re only stopping to drop Captain Picard off.”
“Really? I heard he was going to take Command.”
“What?”
“I mean, think about it, someone has to replace Captain Wright.”
“The Captain replaced Captain Wright.”
“Well, yeah, but that’s really irregular, right? Giving a Galaxy-class ship and the Captain rank to someone without that much experience. I bet they sent Picard out here to take command in case the Captain wasn’t going to work out.”
“If they thought the Captain wasn’t going to work out they wouldn’t have given him the ship anyway.”
“Well, yeah, but, I mean, you know, work out with Larsen.”
“Oh…”
“They wouldn’t have put Commander Larsen here if they didn’t think she wasn’t going to work out.”
“Yeah, but you can tell she’d rather be working with someone more…”
“Stiff?”
“Experienced.”
“I’d still go with ‘stiff’.”
“Either way, Command clearly sent Picard here to make sure she doesn’t try to advance the Klingon way.”
“Let me get this straight…”

Ensign Dvorak turned around, and in so doing failed to notice that the doors to the turbolift were parting as he was talking.

”… Captain Picard is here on a secret mission from Starfleet Command to make sure our First Officer isn’t a Klingon spy planning to take over the ship. Have I got that right?”

“No.”

All three of the ensigns from the science department who had been waiting for the turbolift promptly stood at attention at the highly authoritative voice of Captain Picard as he walked past them.

“As you were,” he said over his shoulder as he continued down the corridor before entering the Transporter Room.

“Yeah,” Commander Dvorak said. “Definitely wasn’t a real conversation. Now that I think back on it I didn’t actually say anything to him. I was kind of in the middle of talking to other people as he walked by.” She would be able to taste the tinge of embarrassment at his recollection of that event.

– Johann Dvorak, Korolev XO

OOC: Fantastic story. I was laughing so hard my husbeast walked in wanting to know what was up.

IC: She could tell the memory of the encounter washed over his mind and the tinge of embarrassment made her think of him as more of a person than he had been before. Even the lofty commander could be embarrassed by his own memories. “I suppose it’s my turn for a question.” She said tapping her finger gently on the table as she thought. Sienna was very tactile this way. Almost always when she was in deep thought, she used her hands to figit while her mind wandered.

“How about favorite story about a childhood friend?”

Nox, CNS
