A normal day for the Europa. The ship was running smoothly, all normal. When the captain checked his messages in the morning, he would find a new message for him.

I never thought I’d like this vest, Johann thought as he sat at his desk. But it really is a lot more comfortable than wearing the standard duty uniform.

He took a sip from his coffee mug before pressing the button to display the morning’s messages.

To: Captain Johann Dvorak

From: Commander Alexander Hartke

Orders: The Europa is to report to Starbase 51 at your earliest convince to resupply and to receive new orders from. Shore leave will be granted at Captains discretion for the duration of the resupply. On arrival at Starbase 51, Captain Dvorak and Commander Avik are requested to meet with Rear Admiral Jason Mcginnis for orders briefing.

Johann frowned slightly at the screen. Starbase 51 was out on the farthest edge of known space, even farther than most of the rest of the Black Fleet’s area of operations, and their last mission hadn’t been too difficult. If they were going to offer shore leave up front and insist on a resupply it was because this Rear Admiral Mcginnis probably had a long and difficult mission in store for them. He pushed the intercom button, and put himself on speakers all throughout the ship.

=/\= All hands, this is the Captain speaking. =/\= He paused for a moment for maximum dramatic effect.

=/\= We’ve just received new orders. Europa will be headed to Starbase 51 for resupply, after which we will be given a new assignment. Shore leave will be available during the resupply operation. That is all. Dvorak out. =/\=

They always give us the leave when we don’t really need it, right? he thought. He pressed the intercom button again =/\= Bridge… actually nevermind I’ll come right out. =/\=

He got up from his desk and walked across the room to the door that lead directly to the Bridge. It parted for him, and he walked right through it to where he would no doubt find Avik having the first watch of the day.

“Status?” he asked her.

NE Gordon was at the Helm. “Course is laid in for Starbase 51 sir. At Warp 5 we should be there in.” He checked his station. “9 days 4 hours. All systems are normal.” He reported to the Captain.

The Captain shot the younger man a glare for the breach in protocol.

Avik had been given the first watch on the bridge. Her posture reminding many crew members of a still, organic statue as she stared forward. Her ears listened to the crew following the captain’s orders before a loud hiss caught her attention. She turned about to see the CO’s door open and his figure step into the bridge, the word ‘Status’ out slipped from his lips. Avik paused in her reply as she spotted Gordon begin to speak up.

She was gradually getting better at reading and determining the crew’s behavior patterns. Despite that, Dvorak still presented enough issues to keep her on her toes. For him, the XO began to adopt a wait then reply method during their interations.

“Thank you Ensign, but I was speaking to Commander Avik,” the Captain said somewhat more politely than he thought. He returned his gaze to his XO and attempted to soften it before addressing her next.

NE Gordon looked taken back. “I’m sorry sir. I’m just excited about the new mission.”

“Nine days?” Marsh questioned. He didn’t need the computer, “We can be there in under four days, if we go to warp 7. Still at a very leisurely pace an that gets us three extra days of shore leave… or at least shore leave three days earlier…”

Normally Range left Bridge duty to his younger officers that needed seasoning, it was good for them, it happened to be a shift he had for himself since enough others were off for one reason or another.

“You know, I was just thinking the same thing,” Dvorak admitted, without admitting that he suspected that the shore leave wasn’t going to make up for whatever was going to come after it. “Increase speed to Warp 7,” he ordered.

He finally turned back to Avik. He stepped slightly closer to her in the chair, to indicate that whatever they were going to talk about wasn’t exactly a public discussion. Lowering his voice he said: “There’s a briefing for you and I when we get there. With a Rear Admiral Jason Mcguinness.”

Avik let her thoughts slid into a compartment. She felt the CO’s reaction to a Junior over a Senior was treading on favoritism, but considering past events it had logical reasoning behind it. This satisfied her enough to let it go. Her head turned to view the approaching CO, realizing something pressing was on his mind and in a simple statement was revealed.

She paused a moment in thought, trying to remember if she had ever heard of the name before. It was unlikely but it could’ve been in passing reading.

“That is… irregular,” she briefly commented, lowering her tone slightly. Until she got additional data, jumping to assumptions or theories couldn’t feed her curiosity.
