Johann stood ramrod straight as soon as he heard the voice, breaking off the kiss. His eyebrows shot up straight as far as they could go.

“That was you?” he asked out loud.

– Johann Dvorak, CO

The kiss was broken to her sudden shock and she realized what she had done. Her speaking to him through their unique connection was not exactly something she had purposefully done. Living the life of a Betazoid meant that telepathic messages were just a part of her daily life. So ingrained in her was the practice that she didn’t always think about doing it… it was just done. And while she had been very careful about this in the professional settings of her life, she had relaxed enough in his presence to forget herself and that someone might feel that to be an intrusion.

Immediately she nodded and stepped away, slipping from his arms. “I am so sorry.” Suddenly her mouth felt dry. She shook her head as she stammered her explanation. “That was incredibly impolite. I promise, I wasn’t actively reading your mind or anything… you just, you think some things very .... ummm… loudly? No, that sounds negative. Ummm. I was just responding to a surface thought. It wasn’t meant to be harmful.” Sienna was obviously flustered by her inadvertent intrusion and one could deduce that she was upset she might have disrupted their date or turned him off from the intimate moment they had.

Nox, CNS

Loudly, huh? he thought. He blinked while taking all of that in. “I mean, it didn’t hurt or anything,” he said a moment later. “It was just a bit of a shock. I guess. A surprise. Though I am pretty used to my thoughts being private.” But it can’t be that bad for me if we ended up here, right? he thought. He smirked a bit, a silly idea having come into his mind.

Pinch hitting for Pedro Borbon, Manny Mota…

– Johann Dvorak, CO

Sienna looked terribly confused and then shook her head with a reproachful look. “Well, that is not very nice. I can’t help it you are loud.” She said, stepping closer to him once more to punch him lightly on the shoulder. Then as if really realizing what he said, she looked even more confused. “What did that mean, Pinch hitting for Pedro Borbon, Manny Mota…”

Nox, CNS

He let out a chuckle. “It means that my thoughts actually are pretty loud, and quite clear as well.”

She stuck out her tongue in an uncharacteristically juvenile gesture. He had baited her or tested himself in the baiting of her and she didn’t much like it though she couldn’t really blame him for it. Whatever tie that bound them had manifested itself in her ability to read his surface thoughts with ease.

This gesture earned Sienna a plainly visible expression of Johann’s amusement that did not require empathy or telepathy to notice.

Ever been to a baseball game? Probably not, actually… Johann hadn’t really been to one himself, considering that the sport had been out of style on Earth for a century or so. It had been making a comeback among certain Human colonies, most notably Cestus III.

– Johann Dvorak, CO

Bemused by the question and wondering at their connection, she decided to try something herself. With a mischievous and slightly superior look on her face, she thought to him, No, I have not ever been to a baseball game. Sports were never high on my list of entertainments, but I hear fans can be quite passionate.

Nox, CNS

They can be, he thought. But I never liked sports either.

“It’s not exactly commonly played on Earth anymore,” he said aloud. “Even though it was historically a very big deal where I grew up.”

— Johann Dvorak, CO

“Ah.” She said smiling. “Well, be glad that things that are wildly popular back home are not necessarily my cup of tea. Otherwise, your privacy would be significantly less in my presence. It was actually a struggle when I was a teenager, to reign in those impulses in the Academy. I made many people angry before I was able to control myself better. And when I went home during a school break, my parents had conniptions.”

Nox, CNS

“Oh? That sounds like a fun story, or three” he said, smiling. “Passing teenage love notes to cute boys, mentally? Unable to control your burning passions? That kind of thing?”

Hmm, how I can I work ‘impulses’, in there? he thought, this time not intending the thought as a message. That wouldn’t have stopped Nox from hearing it.

– Johann Dvorak, CO

She pressed her lips together before giving him a sly smile and chose not to acknowledge his unintended mental message. “More like hearing people’s secret thoughts about me or others and then blurting it out because I think its incredulous or mean and I didn’t hold back my opinions very well. Tact is not something I had inherently. I was quite average in my infatuations and pursuits of them. I wasn’t boy crazy nor a prude. What about you?”
