As he worked on the garlic, the young man gave a slight shrug. “Depends. I mean, my father is kind of the obvious one, but then when my mom started talking about him it kind of made sense why she didn’t like talking about him, or their life. So if I can’t know about him then I guess I want to know about the others.”

Sienna took a clean spoon and scooped out some of the tomato mixture. It tasted almost perfect. She added a bit more salt and mixed more. “From what I have read, your father isn’t exactly the world’s best role model and he did a lot of damage to your mother. What do you think you would get out of knowing him? Or maybe more accurately, what do you want to get out of knowing him?”

Jerrin glowered slightly as he shifted on his feet slightly, still ready with knife in hand. What a question!

She set the mixture aside and began readjusting her work area for the main course. “If you don’t know… that is a totally valid answer, I am just curious if you have an idea or not?”

Tapping the tip of the knife on the cutting board, Jerrin didn’t reply, but after several moments he just shrugged. There were words on the tip of his tongue that said otherwise, but it wasn’t exactly the kind of conversation he wanted to have.

Sienna noticed, not only on an empath level, but also his facial expressions and body language displayed his agitated state. He either didn’t know or he didn’t want to talk about it and she wasn’t going to push. She figured that would be quite a heavy subject and probably not one he was ready to visit but she wanted to see where his line was currently so that she could see progress later as they continued. She merely nodded, dropping that part of the subject without malice.

“Garlic is really key to great Bruschetta… the appetizer we are making. Chefs often don’t add enough or simply make it a part of the mixture of tomatoes, basil and spices. But for me, roasted garlic is more deep in flavor and doesn’t have a sharp tang to combat or displace the natural tang of tomatoes. Thus, I prefer using a roasted garlic paste on the toast as a base.” Satisfied with the flavor of the tomato mix, she passed the bowl over to him. “After placing a little layer of the garlic paste on the toast, go ahead and place a spoonful of this on the toast as well.”

“Have you ever had Italian food?”

Nox, CNS

“Can’t say I have,” Jerrin said simply, switching tasks easily and following her instructions to the letter. He handled the toast with a delicate touch, though it took him a couple tries to figure out how much of the tomato mixture to put on so it wouldn’t overflow. “My mom and I eat a lot of stuff from back home, though she likes to try something new once or twice a week. But Earth has a lot of cuisines.”

~Jerrin

Sienna smiled softly watching him put his mind to the new task. Jerrin was smart and though he might not admit it, he was kind too. He was a good kid going through a lot of complicated things. She finished setting up for the main course, pulling out a massive casserole tray. “That it does. I found that there were many correlations from Italian food to Betazed formal food when I studied at the Academy. The focus in Italy’s culture is on the family and sharing a meal together that lasts several hours. Mind you, I think I am torturing you enough by having you cook with me and spend an hour with the meal afterwards, so I won’t torture you further with a many course meal.”

She grinned and pulled out her pasta roller. It was a semi automated pasta maker. She wasn’t going to spend a whole day making lasagna noodles from complete scratch. It would take too long. “A lot of times its an entire day affair when you factor in the preparation, cooking time which doubles as social time and then finally the eating and drinking of wine, ending in desserts. Its very much like Betazed family days that way. Even though my family didn’t often do the cooking, we did a lot of social time mixed in our eating. I only really learned to cook later in life.”
