“I mean… that…” He looked off to a corner as he thought about word choice very carefully.

“You seem very… guarded… sometimes.” He considered whether to explain more, but decided it was better not to say anything else, lest it sound accusatory.

Sienna, being honest with herself, could definitely see how she could have come off as guarded. She was being guarded. She didn’t want to expose herself to more pain. While she didn’t know what exactly Johann’s reaction would be if she told him he was her husband’s twin, she knew him well enough to assume he would be greatly uncomfortable and perhaps more than a little weirded out by the notion. Their tenuous peace would be shattered and she didn’t know if their working or their personal relationship could recover.

“I would say that is probably quite true.” She said with a wry half smile. Perhaps she could give him some partial truth and that would ease things a bit. “There are people here who are the counterparts to people I knew in my universe. I have very different relationships with them than I do with people here. I endeavor to keep myself from transferring my ....” She paused trying to come up with the right term. “connection? familiarity? To the people here, I have been careful which to some degree makes me seem guarded.”

“That would make some sense then,” he said simply. “You don’t want to be hurt or to hurt anyone else either.”

Despite having seen all the trees already, he still missed them for the forest.

“I suppose it shouldn’t actually be surprising; from what I gathered the apparent divergence between you and your counterpart happened not that long ago. It would only make sense for you to run into some of the same people. It’s very possible according to certain interpretations of quantum mechanics that the two of you actually are the same person up until a certain point where your universes diverged.”

His implants rolled to focus on the wedding ring for another moment or two, and he seemed to consider it for a moment longer than he did before.

She nodded, struggling to keep her hand where it was under his scrutiny. “I gathered that as well. Where she chose to go one way, I chose to go another. Even then there are… similarities where paths have crossed in a different way due to that choice.” Finally unable to stand it any longer she moved her fingers on her left hand and rotated the ring with her thumb. It was a nervous gesture.

Her voice softened as she remembered the other Johann placing that ring on her finger the day of their wedding. “I don’t know if it was the universe pulling the souls of people together because its a connection they share on a cosmic level or if it was luck that brings people back into my sphere of acquaintance. I am no astrophysicist. I like to think it’s the former though.”

“When you put it that way, it sounds almost romantic,” Johann observed with a bit of a smile.

She smiled warmly at that, her thoughts on her husband. His hand had always been a source of warmth. Not heat necessarily, but whenever he had touched her, she had always felt that energy radiating from him. She missed it. When was the last time she had been touched? Sienna’s smile faded as she realized she couldn’t remember and handshakes didn’t count.

“There are a few theories about the universe pulling people towards events of significance or places of importance, especially in cases where the timeline has been altered in some way. That whole thing with the Guardian of Forever where Kirk and crew apparently accidentally broke Earth’s history and put it back together again is kind of the canonical example of that. Something similar could be true for this cross-universe nonsense you’re going through right now.”

“Mmmmm I suppose so. I really hadn’t done much research into it for fear it would bring down my spirit and my determination to eventually find the bastard who did this to me and fix it somehow.” She sighed heavily.

Meanwhile on the bridge, Cassidy sat comfortably in the captain’s chair gazing at the viewscreen. She wasn’t someone who had been greatly ambitious, but she welcomed her promotion even though it felt slightly awkward at the same time. But sitting in the centre seat felt strangely comfortable. Was this what her mother had felt like earlier on in her career? It left her ponderous.
