“Well, we still could,” he offered. “I mean, I don’t know that my parents actually need to be there. When we do it. They kind of understand that I work in space, you know. But I at least have to tell the, both who you are first, and it would be good for them to meet you and everything.”

“Hmmm, okay. Options,” Vora said with a nod. “I think a lot will depend on how Jerrin reacts. If he doesn’t have en entire meltdown, it could be doable. And I think Deacon would be really glad to be there. And then we could always do a bigger sort of celebration later, right?”

“Sure, if you want to,” he said. He wasn’t big on the idea of something big.

“I don’t know, honestly,” Vora said. “I’m mostly tempted to keep it all quiet because it feels like tempting fate to announce my happiness too loudly. But that’s ridiculous, right?”

“Yes, but that’s exactly your brand of ridiculous.”

Vora laughed. “That’s very true.”

The lift stopped suddenly, and the doors parted to reveal someone had been waiting.

“Observation 2,” the newcomer told the computer. The lift resumed. “Was something wrong with the elevator?” he asked them.

“We just finished having sex in it,” Johann offered helpfully.

“Wh- what?”

The lift stopped again, this time on the level that would lead to Europa’s docking port.

Vora’s mouth dropped open slightly as she stared at Johann as they side stepped around the equally shocked officer.

“Bye bye!” Johann said as they walked off of the turbolift. He started leading them down the corridor.

“Johann!” she said, trying to contain her laughter, but only barely managing.

“That was very wrong, you know,” he said to her, referring to his behavior in the turbolift. “But I think I don’t really care. Usually I’m very concerned about propriety. It’s kind of interesting not to be.”

She laughed some more and slipped her arm through his. “Well, as someone who lived a life full of impropriety, I can tell you that it can be quite interesting. I just don’t recommend letting things get too interesting. There’s a line that I’m not sure you want to cross.”

Lt. (j.g) Zorell, Sciences

“I’ll take your word on that as an expert on the topic.”

“Smart move, Dvorak,” she said with a wink.

“Next time you say that it’s going to be hard to know whether you’re talking to yourself,” Mister Captain Johann Dvorak observed.

She gave him an amused sort of grin. “That supposes I’d take your name.” And here they were with another interesting issue to discuss. NOw or later, ti didn’t matter, but it would have to be discussed at some point before they actually got married.

“You can keep yours as long as you promise not to do the hyphen thing,” he said simply.

“I never liked the hyphen. It just creates names that are awkward to say, because it’s two names but you feel like you have to say it as one. You have to race to pronounce it all in a single breath, lest people think it’s your middle name and that you’re being pretentious by insisting that people call you by your full name everywhere, as if you’re famous.”

He adopted a different voice, one that sounded snooty: “Ah, yes, I am Victor Charles Willamson. No, the author of those cheap holonovels is Victor Meade Willamson. I am a classicist.“

“So you avoid that by rushing it. Which is a real problem for us in particular considering how many exotic consonants would all get jammed together.”

They walked a bit farther.

“We’ll have to tell Avik, also,” Johann observed. “I mean, everyone who didn’t already figure it out is going to know, but we should tell her first. I’m sure there’s some procedural thing she might have to do here.”

Vora tried really hard not to frown, but she managed at least not to make too much of a face. Of course he had to do so. It made sense. “There’s a form that has to be filled out to formally state the relationship. Though I don’t think it has to be specifically her. You could do it yourself. Just so long as one of the command officers files it,” she summarized from her memory.

Lt. (j.g) Zorell, Sciences

“Yeah but it would be sort of impolite not to include her on it,” he said. “Not that we’re always good at politeness.” Though he had to admit, the two of them had been doing better recently. The trick seemed to be to keep Avik busy and focused on problems that they could work on together.

I wonder what she does when she isn’t working… he thought idly. He didn’t typically intrude in the personal lives of people under his command, but he had just considered inventing crises as a way to connect better with his first officer, which seemed like a very bad idea.

“Okay,” Vora said simply, feeling it best to let Johann deal with it. Regardless of her feelings about the first officer, she knew that this was another thing that simply had to happen one way or another and she didn’t need to complicate it further needless objections.

Soon enough, the reached the docking section where the Europa was berthed. Vora slowed down and came to a stop. “So, who do we tell first. My feeling is Jerrin, but it may not matter so long as it hears it from me and not someone else.” Once they left the relative quiet of the base they would be under the microscope so to speak. Once work got out, everyone would quickly know. Such was the life of a starship crew. Vora actually didn’t mind, but she knew it was going to be a massive transition for Jerrin and she was taking it whether he approved or not. On the other hand, if they blended their lives, Jerrin had to feel at least a little okay with the idea or else this would blow up in their faces.

Lt. (J.g) Zorell, Sciences

“Jerrin should definitely be told first,” Johann agreed. “And if he’s not on board with it for some reason, I think we need to consider very carefully how we go about proceeding.” Marrying someone with children of their own had never been something that Johann had planned on –well, until very recently, anyway– and he wasn’t sure how to go about that. Usually it was something that would create problems. Fortunately Jerrin’s father was already dead and not really in his life to begin with…
