Sickbay-Hidden Agenda

: : : : : : : : : : : : : : Kayla was there, too. She was helping one of the other injured This was right up her alley. Recently she had worked with battle damaged crew in the last mission. She was using hr medical tricorder to scan her patients to determine which of the others was the more seriously wounded. But it was the ones with broken bones who concerned her the most.

: : : : : : : : : : : :
: : : : : : : : : : : : The man from earlier, his arm still cradled, stepped forward. His eyes nervously looked over Lazarus’ shoulder into the direction his fellow crewmate disappeared to. Fingers wrung about his other hand while he ignored the pain throbbing through the muscles. He hadn’t noticed the bone was becoming displaced and farther damaged.

: : : : : : : : : : : : “Is she going to be alright?” He asked with worry lacing his tone.

OOC: Updated One shard left. The last shard is still in position near the internal thoracic artery (nearest the heart) and require need some tissue to be repaired. : : : : : : : : IC: The first male nurse nodded then moved for the tanks. He quickly pulled them close to the biobed and hooking them into the machine, holding the oxygen mask in his hand. Closely he watched the pulse for any changes in it. : : : : : : : : As Holway’s scope reached for the bone, trying to clasp it. It slipped from the tip once falling farther down into the rib cavity. The patient’s pulse jerked rapidly, but slowly began to steady again. Thankfully no tissue had been torn and the lung was intact as far as the doctor could tell. She had one more chance before it fell far too deep that she would need to crack the chest in order to retrieve it. : : : : –Janice B : : : : : : Unaware of it, Lake drew her breath in sharply when the bone shard slipped from the tweezing end of the scope. There was a general breath held between the three medical people in the seconds it took for the fragment to stop moving again. Luckily, it hadn’t nicked another vein or artery. : : : : : : “Okay, here’s what we’re going to do now.” She looked at the female nurse. I want you to apply the tissue regenerator to the lung as soon as I get hold of that piece of bone again. I want the tissue in the area healed before I pull that shard out, just in case its plugging a tear we don’t know about.” : : : : : : While Lake maneuvered the tweezer into place once more, and got a fairly firm hold on the bone, the nurse collected a tissue regen unit and applied its beam to the lung tissue. Working together, they were able to extract the fragment and then they tried for the third and last one. : : : : : : —Holway, DR

The nurse nodded as she grabbed the tissue regenerator. She stepped closer until she beside the doctor, pausing long enough to check the settings and make last-minute corrections. When she finished, her eyes turned to the doctor to indicate she was ready. Her right hand held it ready at her side while she watched Lake grip the fragment then pulled it clear of the tissue. As predicted, it sliced into the tissue on its exit. Without wasting time, ignoring the spike in the patient’s pulse, the NE pushed her tissue regeneration into the open cavity then began to heal the damage.

Slowly the pulse stabilized when the damage no longer existed. Relief washed over the NE’s expression as she wiped the tip clean, reddened from her sloppiness.

Now all that remained was the last fragment. Thankfully it hadn’t moved during the procedure.

“One more, that’s all.” Holway looked to her team as she guided the scope, hopefully for the last time that day, to the location of the last bone shard. Softly biting her bottom lip behind the mask, she made tiny adjustments to the angle of the instrument until it was perfectly aligned with the sliver. Ever so carefully, the tweezered end opened and grasped the last fragment. With extreme concentration, Lake guided the medical tool until it was outside of the body, then took a deep breath and sighed. “I think we’ve got it all under control now.”

The bone came out easily, though it tried to slip once or twice, missing any vital organs. The NE nurses breathed in relief that the danger was passed as the patient’s vitals stabilized. Now all that was left was to stitch up the wound and monitor the patient for any minor complications.

The man back in the earlier section continued to insist he wanted to see the woman. His arm still cradled against his side and refusing treatment until he knew she was alright.

-Janice B.

When all the precision work had been done and the patient was stable, Lake relaxed just a bit as she closed and repaired the wound to the muscles and flesh. When the surgery was finished, she dropped her medical garb into the sanitizer and left the patient in the capable hands of the nurses to get her set up to stay in sickbay for 48 hours of observation.

She walked out of the surgical suite rolling her head from side to side, stretching out the muscles in her neck. Brilliantly blue eyes took in sickbay to get a feel for what was now going on, when they spotted the man who’d accompanied the woman she’d just operated on.

Lake walked up to him, noting he hadn’t been medically attended to yet. She frowned at the staff. “Why hasn’t this man been treated?”

“We’re sorry, Sir, but he refused. He insisted on waiting for news of the woman…”

Holway walked over to the man. “Come with me, let me treat your injury and while I do that, we can talk about your friend. Alright?” She took hold of his uninjured arm and led him to a bio bed.

The man nodded then followed Holway, letting her lead him away. He didn’t resist while he hopped onto the bed still cradling his arm close.

“Please tell she’s alright,” His eyes held a distinctive pleading and anxiety within them.

-Janice B.

OOC: I’m going to assume she’s okay since you didn’t say differently. If this is wrong—you can delete it.

IC:
Lake got the injured man settled, gave him something for pain and then began running scans on his arm. She was gentle and professional. “The woman you brought in will be coming out of surgery in a minute or two. We’re going to get her set up in a more private area for now, but she’s fine. We were able to remove several pieces of shrapnel from the rib area and heal the damage they caused.” She smiled at him. “So, let me take care of your arm and anything else I find and then we’ll let you look in on her. Okay?”

—Holway, DR

OOC: You assumed correctly. If there was additional complications that your character would’ve seen, I would’ve mentioned it.

Now to your current patient- The lower arm has several hairline fractures, mostly centered on the ulna with the radius suffering minor impact. The muscles around the lower part of the arm has suffered some heavily impact damage from blunt force trauma indicating that something heavy had landed on top or pinned his lower arm at some point. The annular ligament (tendon wrapped about the wrist) has suffered some heavy tearing which could affect his wrist movement later on if not treated and rested.

IC: “Thank the fates,” the man said using an obscure reference to some higher force in the galaxy.

His worry promptly faded, but his face was still covered in slight wrinkles and showed his age better up close. He appeared to be in his early forties. As the painkillers kicked in, he found himself relieved at being freed from the pain. His lips curled into a small, grateful smile at Lake.

“Thank you, I was afraid for her. I can’t lose another. I couldn’t save her sister,” He mumbled as he allowed the woman to scan his injury, “I’m grateful that this whole ordeal…”

He strangely paused, as if catching his words then noticed how he might’ve looked. Quickly he finished his thought, “… will be over soon. I hope.”
