Johann suddenly burst out laughing.

“That was kind of the idea, actually,” he explained with a smile that had persisted from before. The irony of the situation was very amusing. “I was figuring that I’d put that statement to you in the form of a question sometime during the trip. You know, all proper like. Do you want to skip it?”

“The trip or the whole proper statement part?” she asked coyly, smirking.

“Both. You know, that whole thing I was saying about going forwards instead of backwards or whatever earlier that sounded so apt. “

“I think we should still go. Regardless of the getting married part, we do need some time away. It’ll be good for us,” she reasoned.

He stood very close to her. “Either way, we should celebrate. Right now.” He gave her a kiss as the turbolift continued descending, slowly.

Kissing him back deeply, Vora felt a lightness inside that she remembered feeling that first time they kissed after the absolute failure of a camping trip on the holodeck. She could only describe it as feeling ‘right’. Pulling back slightly enough to speak, she whispered in his ear, “So… is that a yes?”

“Yes,” he whispered back. Unlike that first time, he wasn’t hesitant. Not yet, anyway.

“Oh good. Just needed that to be clear.”

He was also content to resume kissing immediately after clearing that point of confusion up.

It seemed like a lifetime ago that she had fallen in love with someone she thought she would have married. Marriage scared her. Being bound to a person for a lifetime in her experience was, at best, a nightmare waiting to happen. But that was before. She had lived through so much since then and until the words had come out of her mouth, she hadn’t realized how strongly she wanted a life with Johann. they already had one, sure, but she wanted more, and knowing that he wanted the same thing made it ten times better.

So knowing that, Vora happily kissed him some more until the lift door slipped open and someone moved to enter. Vora was startled and could feel her cheeks warm, but she still couldn’t fully wipe the smile off her face as she tied to resume some sort of professional demeanour, even though she and Johann were both currently off-duty.

Johann knew he was off duty, and decided he was going to act accordingly.

“Hi,” he said to the new person in the lift as it started to move again. “This is my fiancée. We just decided to get married. That’s why we were making out. I’m completely sober.”
