As if on cue, he happened to step through right at that moment, though he noticed Marsh was about to speak and therefore did not ask for a report.

“It’s radiation.” Marsh said after a moment. “It will resolve itself as we get closer. There is one class M… if we are looking.”

“We’re always looking,” the Captain said more confidently than he actually felt. All of the oddness with this mission made him feel like this time they’d only be looking for trouble.

“Do we know if-“

Matty came onto the bridge for a moment “Captain, I’m going to go back to main engineering and make sure that everything is working right.”

“Yes, that would be appropriate. Carry on, Miss Sullivan.” That was a little weird… he thought.

Cassidy slipped onto the bridge and took her station, looking over the sensor readings to get an idea of the situation. The news of Archie’s death was still sitting hard with her, even after the weeks had passed. It was that feeling like you knew you should have done more but didn’t know what exactly you could have done to have changed. “Any idea if the scattering field is naturally created or artificial?” she asked.

That’s what I was going to ask… Johann thought.

“Commander, I’d recommend we go to yellow alert and keep the shields raised until we have our bearings. There’s far too much unknown about this place and the situation and given everything that happened back at Starbase, I’d advise extra caution,” Abrams said.

Avik nodded at Marsh’s report, “Noted, see what else you can learn about it. Especially if there are any communication signals coming from it.”

She wondered if there was any life on the planet. Avik spotted both the CE and CoS arrive onto the bridge, her attention turned to listen to their comments. She replied to Sullivan first.

“Noted and keep us updated. Especially if something happens,” her eyes turned to Abrams afterward.

Truthfully, she had considered it earlier but she felt she might’ve been overreacting. Seeing the department head hold concerns and suggest it, made her rethink that earlier assumption.

“I was thinking the same thing earlier.”

She turned to the crew and made the orders, “Put the ship on Yellow alert and keep the shields up.”

“Yes, Commander,” Cassidy replied. She shifted the ship into Yellow Alert and watched the shields subsequently go up.

Dvorak was pleased that everyone was handling this exactly as they should be so far without him having to say or do anything yet. Definitely things were going much better than the last time they arrived in an unknown system with something unusual going on.

“Have you changed our course or speed?” he asked Avik quietly.

The additional stage of alert also made Abrams more wary and she kept her eyes out for any potential dangers.

“Everything, including field density, power level and rate of decay suggest that the anomaly is a natural occurrence.”

Well, that’s an inconvenient conclusion, Dvorak thought. An artificial radiation field would at least tell them that an ambush was certainly going to happen.

Avik’s head turned toward Dvorak, then shifted her attention back to the front. She spoke to the captain in a soft tone.

“I only advised we approach with caution. Being ambushed was a primary concern considering our recent experiences lately and the reports,” Avik commented.

“Very well,” the Captain said with a hint of approval.

She moved from Marsh back to her own seat, a sign of her giving command back to the CO. As with all her past experiences, she remained ready to step in whenever she was needed.

“Slow to one half impulse power,” the Captain ordered. “And come to new course two-three-five mark three-eight-two.” That would put them on a very cautious approach towards the planet.

As they approached the planet, they could tell that the same radiation that covered system, also prevented the Europa from getting clear readings of the surface. It was M-class, with a population of approximately 3 million humanoids in the pre-bronze age stage of development and 1 human. The majority of the population was situated in small pockets throughout the system. Any further details were unavailable due to the interference from the radiation. The planet had one moon which was devoid of life.
