“It does raise the stakes, doesn’t it?” he asked as he escorted them down the corridor towards the turbolift. “I mean, one of the consequences of this wonderful Holodeck technology is that any bum can take a woman to the beach for a date, and it can be one of the best beaches in the known galaxy. But, if I choose whatever program is considered to be one of the best beach simulations in the system, I run the risk that a lesser suitor has already taken you on a date there.” Johann was practically glowing with confidence that this would not be a problem, very self-assured in his own superiority at asking women on dates to beaches.
Her heart fluttered again. He seemed very confident and she liked that in him. He was confident in command, but sometimes people who were confident in one thing were very much not in another. He had asked her on the date and was following through. She loved surprises and he was earning more points by the minute.
As they reached the end of the corridor, they boarded the turbolift as the only occupants. “Holodeck 1” he said, and the lift obliged with an obedient set of beeps. It began moving…
– Johann Dvorak, CO
She turned to unabashedly look at her date. He was handsome with his shaved head and facial hair. He looked distinguished. The eyes were mostly innocuous except when they were focusing on something in particular or he had changed a setting. She knew he had them of course, but they looked relatively normal to her. Granted, she was used to deep and dark soulful eyes that were common among her people. He looked relaxed, which was something she didn’t often see in someone in command. She wasn’t arrogant enough to claim it was her presence, but she was glad that he was able to seem relaxed in her company.
Thankfully, Johann had no telepathic ability whatsoever, and had no idea that any of these thoughts were going through Siennadye’s mind. So, none of the insecurities that he still felt about his recently acquired prosthetics were triggered by this line of thought. Indeed, he was unusually relaxed at this moment, but also focused on his current objective, such that he wouldn’t have thought to analyze why that would be.
Before she could open her mouth to speak, the turbolift stopped, allowing an engineering ensign to get on. He was quick to observe and look away, pretending he didn’t really notice the other occupants. “Bridge.” He said simply as the doors shut and the lift continued on its way.
Nox, CNS
A hint of disappointment crept into Johann’s feelings, until he remembered that this particular ensign had only been on the ship since Korolev’s last port call.
Well, at least we don’t need to have an awkward…
Before he could finish that thought, the turbolift stopped early, and a Trill man with a distinguished dark brown beard and a perfectly full head of hair got on board. Unlike everyone else in the car, he wore the vest over his red shirt that was only available to those of Captain rank or higher.
“Bridge,” he said in perfectly stiff fashion, and the doors shut behind him. Unlike the Ensign, he seemed to take careful note of Dvorak and Nox. He also did not require an introduction for everyone there to know who he was.
Siennadye’s eyebrow rose as she watched the Captain get on the turbolift. She didn’t seem to mind his presence, comfortable around him as much as she is anyone. Captains were subject to therapy and mental health check ins just like everyone. While she had not met him personally in her capacity as Counselor, she was able to make friends easily.
“Number One,” he said. There was a formality even to the informal name. “And you are Miss Nox, yes? I do not believe we have had the opportunity to meet yet.”
She smiled warmly to the Captain and nodded in confirmation. “Yes sir, I am Lieutenant Siennadye Nox. And no, we have not yet met but my door is always open.”
Looks like another drastic change you’ve made recently, eh, Johann? Captain Vars thought, not taking any notice of the possibility his thoughts may have been read, despite the fact he was very deliberately contemplating Siennadye’s nature.

Sienna blinked, but did not otherwise acknowledge his rather loud surface thoughts. Most people tended to find her knowing even surface thoughts as rude. She did wonder what other drastic changes Johann had might have made.
Nox, CNS
“I believe I am due for an evaluation, so I probably will grace your door soon. My yeoman will set an appointment up.” It was a formal response that didn’t quite reflect exactly the same sort of warmth that Siennadye had shown.
“Of course sir. I look forward to it.” She found herself immediately liking the man. The fact that he was willing to sit down with another counselor other than the CNS was a nice change from the usual misgivings Captains had when visiting counselors. This would give her great practice in speaking to men at his rank. She was sure she was up to the task. Having been in the heat of battle had given her quite a bit of experience in dealing with challenges.
The turbolift slowed to a halt, and the doors parted.
“This is our stop, sir,” Johann said.
“Ahh, very well, carry on.”Just as they were exiting the lift car, from behind the Captain’s voice came up again: “Oh, actually, Number One…”
Johann quickly pivoted to his left and held the turbolift door open by placing his left hand inside the frame of the door. Siennadye, being attached to his right arm would have been swung in a counter-clockwise direction slightly by the sudden movement.
She had walked a few steps and found herself having to move around to the left as Johann was kept back by the Captain. She was surprised by this movement but was fairly light on her feet. She was only mildly klutzy in moving where she was directed.
“Sir?” he asked.
“Stop by the Ready Room five minutes before your next Bridge shift. We need to plan briefly for that… matter… we discussed earlier.”
“Certainly sir.”He moved his hand away from the door frame, and the turbolift continued proceeding up the shaft.
“Sorry about that,” Johann said as he turned to face Siennadye once again.
– Johann Dvorak, CO
Her attention returned to her date and she smiled. My, he was a handsome man, she thought, gazing into his face and drinking it in. “Is it a super secret matter or are you able to discuss it with me?” Then shaking her head, she hastened to add with a mild hand flail, “Or, is it something you would rather not discuss… You are not obligated to spill every secret to me. I am painfully curious but I respect it if you say no.”
“It’s not a secret; the rest of the crew will find out soon,” he said non-chalantly, as he turned to face his way towards their destination. “The Captain has been selected for joining. It’s part of a special program for Dominion War veterans. They’re trying to preserve the memories for historical purposes.”
She didn’t notice that she had basically been moved to block his way to get to the holodeck by Johann turning back to the Captain to answer him.
Nox, CNS
He, however, did notice that. His occular implants looked her up and down. “Do you dance?” he asked.
– Johann Dvorak, CO
What a peculiar non-sequitur, she thought as she watched him visibily look her body up and down. It did not occur to her that she was blocking the way though it probably should have. She was still thinking about the news he had disclosed about the Captain being selected to Join with a Trill. Confused by his sudden question, she blinked and then nodded. “Any Betazoid worth their weight can dance Johann. Can you?”
Nox, CNS
He leaned towards her slowly, as though he was about to share some great revelation. “I took a class once,” he half-whispered.
She enjoyed the co-conspirator tone he took with her and had to grin. His revelation wasn’t much of one. She shook her head ruefully.
“But the reason I asked is because you handled that sudden spin rather gracefully. Though, I think it would be rude for me to do it again unless we had a compelling reason. Like, unless we were dancing. Or the Captain came by again. Or if there was a Red Alert or something.”
Nah, he thought in response to an unheard question. It’ll be more fun to see if she figures it out…
— Johann Dvorak, CO
For a second, she simply looked at him, wondering what he was meaning for she knew he had some other meaning rather than talking about dancing. Then the light bulb sparked and she looked around, taking in where she was in relation to him and their destination. “Ah, I see.” She wondered if she should move right away. He was close to her now and she could feel the sizzle in the air of attraction she felt for him. Yet they hadn’t even made it to their date, much less through it. Perhaps it was too early for those thoughts. So she smiled. “I appreciate the compliment.” She said as she turned, as gracefully as she had before and took his arm once more. Now out of the way, they could continue onto their destination.
