“That went better than I expected,” he thought aloud after Deacon was out of earshot.

Vora grinned. “Let’s just say I’m glad it did go so well. But he’s a good person and I suspected it would be fine. Didn’t mean I wasn’t nervous though. You both are so important to me, I just couldn’t wrap my mind around the idea that there might be tension or anything between you two.” Even if she could explain to people that there had never been anything romantic between her and Deacon, they were extremely close and someone prone to jealously could read too much into that fact. But luckily Johann as not the jealous or possessive type. If he had been, they would never have happened. In the very least, she had enough dignity and self-respect not to go down that path again.

“Oh, yeah, I didn’t actually expect that there was going to be any,” he said. “Well, not really. Not because of him, normally…” he trailed off as he tried to think carefully about what he was going to say next.

“I guess… if I were in his position, I might be inclined to be… umm… protective? And while I don’t think there would be anything wrong with that, misunderstandings can occur.” That sounded an awful lot like what had happened between him and Jerrin earlier, though that even wasn’t on his mind at the moment.

“But that obviously didn’t happen here.”

Vora smiled. “Well, he is protective. But he’s seen me go through enough ups and downs over the last few years to know at a glance if I’m doing well and have the right motivations for being involved with anyone.” She slipped her arm through his and gave him a fond grin. “Let’s just say that you’re the first person I’ve ever introduced to Deacon. You are both important to me and you each play vastly different roles in my life. I guess a small part of me-” She cut herself and shook her head. She wasn’t entirely sure what was was trying to say here.

Johann was a bit surprised by this; everything prior to the last sentence that she had been saying was plainly obvious to him, even if he never explicitly indicated that.

Exhaling abruptly, Vora drew them to a stop and she took a moment to gaze deeply in her eyes. “I love you, Johann. I love the ease that exists in our relationship. Sometimes though, it still catches me by surprise. I hate to admit that a part of my mind is waiting for something to mar that, but it never happens. And I hate that this dinner felt like some sort of test, but it was in a way.” She bit her lip for a brief moment and shook her head slightly again. “I’ve never been out and about with my partner and had it been in an equal capacity. I’ve got it down on the Europa because I know how to maintain discretion. But out in a larger public setting where the eyes of the crew aren’t necessarily always on us, it felt a bit strange. Nice, but… strange.”

“We certainly don’t do it… well… ever… right? You know, I have to admit… it’s kind of funny… but sometimes… I think our relationship develops backwards.”

“I mean, usually I ask women out on dates, all planned out and everything, and the times where they go well, things basically go from more formal and structured to less formal and intimate. I didn’t plan anything at all this time, and we kinda started at intimate and informal and now we’re getting structured and formal…” Then he hastily added “…but still intimate.” Lest she interpret that as some sort of negative commentary.

“So I guess it is strange for me too, but in an entirely different way. Though… I think we might be able to fix that…”
