“Great,” Johann said with a slight smile that seemed to be a deliberate contrast with Jerrin’s teenage ambivalence.

“It would mean continuing the work with Counsellor Nox too. Just like everyone here has to be cleared by her, she gets a say,” Vora said simply. That would help deal with the punching people issue i conjunction with getting him to be productive. This was her non-negotiable point.

Yep, he knew it. That was the obvious thing coming since she had dragged him to Nox in the fist place.

“Of course. After you’ve seen her and she’s approved you for duty, report back here and we’ll have something for you to do. Or we’ll send you along to someone who has something for you to do. Either way, there’s no shortage of things to do.”

Was that a blessing or a curse?

Jerrin sat up a bit more and nodded more confidently. “Okay, I can do that,” he said quietly, though it was clear his mind was active. “Should I… go now?”

Do you want to? Johann thought and almost asked aloud before his mother stepped in.

Vora smiled. “In Starfleet, we wait until we are dismissed by the higher ranking officer. In this case, the Captain will do so if he has nothing else to add or ask.” It was small, yes, but she saw the slight shift in his demeanour that spoke volumes to her.

“I don’t have anything else to add. Do you have anything you want to ask or tell me that we haven’t already talked about?”

Jerrin considered this for a moment, chewing on the inside of his cheek. “Umm, I mean, I figured you would tell me later, but what sort of jobs would I be doing?” he asked, at least managing to look Johann in the eyes.

“That’s a good question,” Johann said. “We’re going to give you a variety of stuff to figure out what it is you’re good at, and for you to figure out what you might like doing. I’m pretty sure every major department can find something for you to do.”

Jerrin nodded slowly, though rather than him seeming disinterested, he seemed to be taking in what Johann was saying.

“I mean, if you have something you want to try, we can start with that. The requirements are that it’s not something we’re making you do against your will, and your mother approves of whatever it is.”

“Nothing specific comes to mind just now, though there are some engineering things that are interesting,” the teen said before glancing at this mother. What limits would she put on this?”
