She wasn’t wrong but it was even more than that. “I don’t really know what family is, and what I’ve learned it to be I have taken from my time here on the Europa. I’ve gotten comfortable with the idea that I get to choose who my family is, and a part of me wonders if that has changed now. But I also know that I still get to choose who I allow into our lives, regardless of genetics. My uncle is a good example of that,” she said, scowling slightly at the thought of Torno Hass. Vora sighed. “I’ve accepted also that showing up on Tenra means I will need to be prepared for a few encounters that I might want or be looking forward to.”

“Yes well, the short answer is .... You will always get to choose who family is. Blood relations can be a part of that family, or as you have lived, not at all. Family is in the heart, a level of care and deep understanding. Family is support and being present. Family is duty mixed with love. If your father becomes a part of that in time, then great. If he doesn’t, then it will be no less to you. He is a person asking to be let in and like anyone you meet, its up to you if he stays based on how he treats you.”

All that Nox described was really exactly as she had found here on the Europa or with Deacon. She considered Deacon family and while she couldn’t quite name what role he had, she just knew he was as important to her as anyone else.

Vora nodded. “What if he is good and lovely, but the others aren’t. I mean, he is a part of a powerful family. I know my Uncle isn’t the best example to go by, but I dealt with people like often when I was with Roquan. That judgement…” She frowned. “I want to say I don’t care what they think, but that isn’t really true.”

“You aren’t a sociopath Vora. That means you do feel. In time any hurt you feel based on how they think of you will fade either because you have lived enough of a life to let it go, or you have chosen to let it go because they are not important. Such things though.... they come in their own time. He may be a part of a powerful family… on his planet, but that is not an indicator as to how much power he has concerning you. That is entirely up to you. In this case, you should consider yourself powerful.”
