“How about favorite story about a childhood friend?”

Nox, CNS

“Are you sure it’s your turn for a question?” Johann asked as an attempt to stall for time. “I’m not sure if I have that many good stories about childhood friends. Childhood was pretty boring, you know. That’s at least half the reason I decided to work in space.”

He was thinking about an actual answer, but he was surprised to find how hard it had become to think that far back. I’m finally getting old.

“Our childhood defines at least a part of who we are as adults. You can embrace your history and learn from it, reject your history and run from it, or figure out a middle ground that changes over time, but it will follow you… always present and always giving some measure of influence on your current you. I suppose that is answer enough though.” She laughed and shook her head. “Your turn.”

“You’re very accepting,” Johann casually observed. He was a bit embarrassed that he didn’t give a better answer.

“Let’s maybe peek at your history a bit. Are you actually from Betazed?”

“Oh yes.” She laughed softly. “I think my parents would have what is called a conniption if I ever said no to that. They are very steeped into the culture there and have very little wish to know more outside of Betazed. It is a beautiful planet though and I think there is always a part of me that misses it. I have never seen gardens so green as my memory of my home planet.” Siennadye smiled wistfully, remembering her favorite botanical garden where she spent countless hours reading and studying under a particularly favorite tree. “I suppose that is why they don’t understand my desire to leave.”

“Oh, is it like, a ‘our-planet-is-perfect-because-we’ve-solved-every-problem’ type thing? ‘Cause that’s the big disease on Earth, but we don’t get as much side-eye over it because the other current fad among Humanity is the whole we-strive-to-better-ourselves-just-out-of-pure-goodness deal. So it tends to work out as a wash.” It certainly sounded as if he was very skeptical about these common beliefs that humans had about themselves.

She laughed, a soft melodic sound of amusement, then shook her head. “Goodness no. Betazed is hardly perfect. There is the issue of privacy… being that there is none. There is the issue of our royal caste system, one I think a bit antiquated though the royal families do a decent job of running the planet and its role in interstellar politics. We just tend to concentrate on the green spaces of the planet. We are a bit like showman. If anyone is going to see it, it needs to be breathtaking. That goes for our buildings, our parks, our clothes, our hair, our homes.” She was more than a little flippant about how her people were sticklers for showing off.

“And you? From Earth?”
