“I’m not sure, honestly. His schooling was rather disrupted and lacklustre, not unlike mine, so we’re just catching him up and letting him explore. I want him to be exposed to lots of new things and see where he is inspired. He’s young still, but Tenraith mature faster in adolescence than Humans, so he’s maturing a lot faster than it might seem. I’ve only got a couple years before he’ll be considered an adult and ready to make his own decisions. Right now I want him to feel he has stability, but also the freedom to choose. And some discipline. Because he’s been a bit moody lately, and we’re having a more rough patch than I expected after he settled.” Vora knew it was impossible to keep him from making poor choices, but she could make sure how they were handled would not be detrimental. But there were no guarantees, of course.

“Well, he’ll find something; there’s plenty inspiring about a starship if he’s looking to be inspired,” Johann thought aloud. “It’s all a lot for him to take in.”

“There is that,” Vora conceded.

I don’t even know how I’ve managed to take it in, he thought as he stabbed at another bit of fried gagh.

“What about some sort of of extra studies thing?” Deacon suggested. “You know, those camps or whatever where kids can go study for a month somewhere with other youth to learn more intensively about something they like.”

Vora seemed to consider that. “Maybe. I just wouldn’t want him to feel like I’m trying to get rid of him because things are a bit rough.”

“Of course not,” Amhurst said quickly. “It’d have to be something he actually wanted to do. Something to look into maybe.”

She nodded and took a final bite before moving her plate to the side, now deeply contemplative. Was distance a good thing at this point? They’d had plenty of time to be considered settled, but they were still making up for lost time. There was the other thought that maybe she simply wouldn’t. maybe she never would.

“Do you know what he wants to do?” Johann asked, playing off of Deacon’s comment. “I mean, I don’t, because we haven’t talked about that. He just seems to sort of soak everything around him up and contemplate it. I can see the gears in that mind of his spinning but what makes them go and why is a lot more opaque.”

Vora nodded at Johann. “He keeps things pretty much to himself unless he’s lashing out these days, but he is a good student and everyone he’s worked with says he’s cooperative. He’s especially good in any of the sciences and shows an aptitude for physical mechanics. Probably worth him spending a bit more time with some of the engineers.” She gave a lopsided smile that was somewhat sad. “Seems he saves his ire for me.”

“It usually works that way at his age,” Johann observed. “But you’re right, he might benefit from hanging around some of the Engineers. I’m sure you can figure something out there with… whoever we will have in Engineering.” Fleet Command had not yet indicated when a new Chief Engineer would be assigned, or who it would be, or how they would get there, let alone that it would be Madison Sullivan who they’d pick up at Starbase 51. That’s because this thread is quite a bit before the current main sim, not that we usually break the forth wall this explicitly to remind people of things.

“Does your fleet operate with the same sort of shambolic inefficiency that we have to deal with here?” Johann asked Deacon directly. Johann had been the Captain of Europa for many years at this point, and Fleet Command never seemed to be particularly on the ball about anything in that entire time. There was even that period where the Europa was apparently missing for 9 months due to a particular classified time travel incident, and nobody at then-Sixth Fleet seemed to notice…
