IC: Stars streaked past on the viewscreen as Europa made its merry way along at warp speed. The Bridge was relatively quiet as instruments beeped and booped like they usually do. NE Keynes sat at the flight control console, and he was bored. They had been following the same course for a whole week. There was not much for him to do here. He was so bored he began brushing his mustache with his finger, just to have something to do. Then when that failed to be entertaining, he decided to take a real risk, and engage NE Hayek at the Ops station in conversation.

“How much longer do you think it will be?” he asked with his English accent.
“Huh?” she asked. She was surprised by the question.
“That we will stay on this course.”
“You can see that on your own panel there.”
“Something will interrupt us.”
“So?”
“How long do you think it will be?”
“I don’t know.”
“Guess.”
“No.”
“Come on, guess.”
“You’re whining like a little kid.”
“Am not.”
“That’s exactly what a little kid would say.”
“Why would you-”

Their rather juvenile discussion was cut short by a series of beeps from both their consoles.

“Are you seeing this on sensors?”
“Yes. Point zero three light years away. Whatever it is we almost missed it…”

Cassidy was on duty, covering the bridge until a more senior officer took over, and while the discussion was remarkably silly, she hadn’t seen a ned to intervene… yet. “Report,” she called out calmly. “What’s on sensors?”
