She thought about his question for a moment. Sienna could have given quite a list she liked based on what she would be eating with it, but he assumed drinking it just to drink it. There not only was type of wine to consider: red, white, rose, and blends. Also the many varieties, blends and flavors within each type. Her mind kept returning to one in particular though and so she answered, “Pinor Noir. And yourself?”

Nox, CNS

“Pinor Noir, that’s can be so many flavors,” He paused. “People underestimate how hard it is to make the Pinot wines… the grapes are clustered like a pine cone increasing the chance for cross infection and rot. Back in the day, for a great wine, the grapes needed to be checked by hand.” He waved his hand about, “the flavors grow over time, so a young wine is medium-bodied and more fruity like cherries, raspberries, and strawberries. As the wine ages it gets more complex and a little more… earthy.”

He looked about, it didn’t seem that either lady was entertained by his monologue about wine. “Cabernet Sauvignon,” He said flatly seemingly hurt by their lack of interest. “It actually can come from the same region as the Pinors. Slightly better grape, it tends to be better in the warmer regions of France… Italy makes some good one’s too. Don’t tell my father I said so though. The only way I could make him madder was if I commented about the great wines of California… he’d disown me.”

Cass laughed. “I’m sure you’ve said far worse at times and he hasn’t disowned you yet,” she said with affection. They had had that talk, about him eventually leaving Starfleet to assume his responsibilities as a heir. What they hadn’t talked about, at least not for a good long while, was if she factored into those plans or not, or even how she felt about them. Was it something she wanted? It wasn’t a bad sounding life and she was an intelligent woman who could hold her own in a crowd, but here, as a security officer, as a department head, she did something, had a role she was proud of. She didn’t have huge ambitions and wasn’t necessarily aiming for the captain’s chair or anything, and yet.. she could see that one day. Another Captain Abrams in the family. Could she be a partner (or even wife, as she suspected Steven’s family would insist on) and still serve? She didn’t know. Hell, she didn’t know if they would even approve of her. She was born and raised on a colony of no appreciable social status. Smart, yes, and driven when needed. But did that make her a reasonable candidate for wife of a future Baron. Cass had no idea.

“Yes, but there are lines you just don’t cross.” Steven said ominously.

“A Cabernet man.” She smiled and nodded. “Somehow that seems about right for you. If your father doesn’t want to know about wines made in California, he will positively faint at the mention of the delicious new wine variations coming out of New France colony.” She knew of Steven’s family through his file, but she liked to ignore that in some social settings and give her a chance to get to know the person in front of her in a different way. “I take it he is a stickler for tradition.”

Nox, CNS

Steven tilted his head and exhaled. “For me mostly, I have to be a good Noble.”

“He might b able to survive the shock of good wines coming from off world,”Marsh agreed, “And he is a Francophile, so New France might just be French enough for him not to lose his mind.” Steven smiled. “France is the best, Spain, is next Germany for some strange reason is next, then the rest of Europe. Then he can’t seem to decide if he hate England or The United States more. Generally its England if you don’t talk about the wine industry since England doesn’t have much of one.”

Marsh

Resting her arm on the table, Cassidy listened attentively, as she did. She didn’t have much to contribute to the conversation but Steven Marsh was always full of interesting tidbits of knowledge. She knew his relationship with his father was at times complicated, but she would always take an opportunity to get to know more about her partner’s family. “I really should learn French,” she said.
