Johann began typing out a message on the computer terminal in his quarters…
Avik,
I thought about your idea for playing that card game that you mentioned the other day. I think I played it before but it’s been years; like I said, I don’t really remember the rules. I also floated the idea as a trial balloon among a few people on the Bridge; there was some interest but it seems like people might want to try something with betting involved, and I’m not really sure how that would work (or, alternatively, if we should even be encouraging that kind of thing).
I kind of want to try it out and see what we can do before we start pitching it to everyone else. Would you be interested in playing sometime later this week after your shift?

He looked at the words on the screen. Then he squinted at them, as if he was actually thinking about whether he hit the right tone or not, before he decided it was fine and then pushed the “Send” button.
Of course, the moment after he pushed send, he wasn’t sure about how he signed the message. Ehh…? he thought.

Avik reread the message for the sixth time that day. She had been so accustomed to duty instructions and reports. Originally she thought it was a prank rather than an actual invitation.
She clicked it into her memory storage then departed her quarters at the correct time. In certain human events, food was often brought and she hesitated on carrying it out. Avik decided the best course was to apologize for any mistake. She turned up empty-handed as she pressed the button to signal her arrival.
When Dvorak signaled her to enter, she did. The first words out of her mouth was a very logical question.
“Do you have a deck ready or do you need assistance in how to make one?”

Straight to business, Johann thought.
“I have a standard 52-card French-suited deck from Earth already on the table,” he said simply. “Will that be adequate?” It was of course, a relevant question to ask. Playing card games varied quite a bit between cultures and worlds. After all, the cards on Beta Antares 4 are different, but not too different…
Dvorak made no notice at all of no food being brought by Avik; the thought that this could be that sort of occasion did not even occur to him.

Inside, Avik relaxed. Dvorak appeared not to notice or mind the fact she brought nothing. When he mentioned the number, she paused to consider her answer.
“It would for test trials, but to prevent a method called counting cards it’s easier to have more than one deck involved. It increases the number of high-value cards and the possibilities.” She pointed out as she entered.

OOC: I believe we were aiming to continue or revive this, right?
-Janice B.OOC: Up to you. I’ll reply and then you can roll with it (or not if we don’t feel like it).
IC: “Good point,” he said. He wandered over to the replicator and shortly thereafter another 52-card French-suited deck from Earth materialized.
“We could even do more of them with a shoe, except I’ve never loaded one of those.” He had been in a few casinos before, both on Earth and in star systems very far from it, but he was not a card sharp by any means. Or card shark. Whatever the phrase was.

“The more cards we use, the harder it will be to cut and shuffle the deck. Unless you have larger hands to hold them. If memory serves me, most of our crew have fairly similar dimensions for their hand size.” Avik commented, taking the seat across from the CO.
“The best way to determine if the cards are too many is to test it. Holodeck would’ve been a better option to determine what hand sizes might struggle. Are we aiming to have one person always shuffling the cards or passing it around?” Enjoyment peeked out from underneath her inquiring tone.
