“Indeed,” the Tenraith said. “I think the first steps involve just letting the information we now know about each other inform our future interactions. I will try to give you space when I’m experiencing more emotions and I hope you will understand that some of my reactions can’t be helped but also that I’m not a danger to anyone. Not really. Most days the person I’m more of a danger to is myself. Besides, I’ve done a lot of growing, even since that day in that cell on that damn planet. Give me credit for that too, and I suspect things will be easier than they were.”

Avik let Vora finish before she put in her perspective, ensuring her side was not left out. They still had much to learn about each other.

“Fair enough. However, you are allowed to challenge my logic in a respectful manner. If you believe I’m mistaken, then do not hesitate to share why. I might learn new information I didn’t have before and that will influence my actions. Else, nothing will change or get better. I am not unreasonable or practice grudge holding because I do value my officers.”

Avik took a breath then continued. She suspected that Vora had the common sense not question her in front of other officers when she brought up her concerns.

“To be honest, I didn’t expect you to join me on this trip.”

Vora nodded, smirking. “Well, a friend of mine reminded me that while I don’t hide my past, I don’t share it and a lot has changed since I first boarded the Europa. Not everyone knows me or what I’ve been through. I figured you had gone through the trouble of extending an invitation that it would be impolite to say no, given that we had some ground to rebuild between us.”

“What made you extend the invitation in the first place” Vora asked.

“The Counselor suggested it.” Avik saw no reason to lie about the origins.

It really didn’t surprise Vora that that was the case. Nox was not one to shy away from asking people to consider options that might be personally difficult but ultimately worthwhile.

It was clear it wasn’t her idea. If it had been, she would’ve done it sooner. Avik continued as she moved on to explain more.

“At first, I questioned the wisdom of it. I had numerous reasons why I felt it wasn’t a good idea, but the Counselor’s logic was stronger. Starting the invitation was the most difficult part.”

“She can be quite convincing,” Vora said. “And I can understand your hesitancy. We’ve not had the best interactions so it’s easy to conclude that the invitation wouldn’t go over very well. All I can say is I’m glad you did. I’ve spent a long time worrying about how others perceived me. It’s a hard habit to break even though I’m in a much different place in my life. I’ve earned where I am, even when all the variable said I’d fail.” She looked at Avik. “I’ve had people all my life tell me I wasn’t good enough, not worth anything. It’s a hard message to deprogram. I think I perceived your actions after that terrible mission on that planet to be confirmation that I didn’t measure up somehow. But like I’ve said, I’ve been working on it.”

“I’ve always seen failure as a way to progress. Without it, you never understand the incorrect way to move forward and why it is so. Unfortunately, trauma and emotions can make that difficult.” Avik stated, her form comfortable in her seat.

“This experience became an enlightening one. With continual work on both of ours parts, I am confident things will improve.”

Her eyes shifted when she noticed something. Jasper and his half-sister lurked in the shadows nearby. While the teenager had tried her best not to look obvious, the younger child didn’t.

“Jasper, I am certain your mother would consider this ill-manners.” Avik waited to observe his guilty look before turning back to Vora.

“With matters resolved for now, we should continue with our planned events. I believe Jasper’s patience have reached their limits.”
