“Let’s head to the shuttlebay,” he said. “I have an idea on how we can disrupt the field. If it’s brief, we’ll want to get spaceborne fast to exploit the gap. If it’s not, the ship is still going to be helpless for a while.”

Vora nodded, eager to be doing something that seemed useful. Not that her memory wasn’t helpful here, but it only got them so far.

Next he tried using the little miniature comm relays that they had sprinkled all the way up here back from Engineering. =/\= Hello Engineering, can you hear me? =/\=

Vora repacked the toolkit and got herself ready to go, moving towards the corridor.

The engineer left the discharged battery behind as she packed up her own gear. A response came in to the Captain’s call. =/\=Hello, we can hear you.=/\= The signal crackled slightly but was understandable. =/\=What can we do to help?=/\=

Well at least they didn’t have to worry about communications at the moment. It was one less thing they had to juggle as they made their way to the shuttlebay. She had a good feeling about their plan and that it would net them the information they desperately needed.

=/\= Well… =/\= Johann paused a moment to compose his thoughts slightly, to ensure he could explain the plan clearly.

=/\= We’ve got a working theory that whatever it is that has us trapped here is feeding off of Europa’s main power, and we’re going to launch a shuttle to investigate that further in the next few minutes. We will need to create a large power disruption in order in order to confirm that, so I would like you to be ready to perform an emergency shutdown of the matter/antimatter reactor when I give the explicit order to do so. =/\=

He stopped talking and let the plan hang in the air, as if acknowledging that it would ordinarily be a very bad idea. Some ideas are so bad, they’re worth doing anyway, he thought.

=/\=Acknowledged Captain. We’ll start the steps needed to shut it down but hold off on the final button push until you give the order.=/\=

After arriving to the shuttlebay, the engineer had to manually open the doors as power to them were out. “Phew.” She said while wiping her brow. “A thought I had on getting the outer doors open… I’m not sure if the external forcefield will actually be on when the door cracks open. I’m also not sure on how we’re going to get those open manually.”

“EVA suits and magnetic openers?” Vora suggested, glancing at Johann. Now that they had a basis for a way forward, she wasn’t about to let them be easily deterred. Their plan was a sound one in her mind and it sure beat sitting around waiting to run out of breathable air.

“We’d still have to contend with decompression and anything not nailed down being sucked out. Otherwise I think that’s as good an idea as any.” The engineer replied.

GM Dread

“We should test the gravity boots on the suits first,” Johann said. “And shut the door behind us before we try to open the hangar. I’d suggest trying to start the shuttle up first too, and maybe using its tractor emitter to open the bay door, but whatever is draining everything from everywhere might not give us the luxury of doing that.”

“Wait, actually… doesn’t this thing have explosive bolts?” he wondered aloud. “I mean, I don’t remember, but some bay doors do.” He’d have to look for that, since he couldn’t just ask the computer or look up the manual.

The engineer shook her head. “I’ve never seen anything in our specifications mention explosive bolts to breach the bay doors.” She turned around and sealed the door behind them to prepare the bay for vacuum. “The shuttle tractor beam idea is fantastic though it’ll require a deft touch. It’ll save us from cranking away at the doors forever.” She paused in thought before moving to a console and checking the status of it. “Okay so some good news. I can do a controlled venting of the atmosphere from the environmental controls instead of risking an explosive decompression. We’ll want to get suited up or in a shuttle before that.”

“I vote for before,” Vora said, even though it meant being in an EVA suit for longer and of which she normally wouldn’t want. While her claustrophobia was rather specific, she never liked being in a suit longer than she had to. “And then we can do as you suggest and test the boots first too,” she said to Johann.
