Lucius chuckled when he spotted Avik fight not to sign at his antics. His lips curled into a smile while he tried to encourage her, his tone soft and coaxing.

“Come on, it will be fun. You do remember what fun is, right?” He teased her light then checked his own harness.

Satisfied they were both ready, he began the ascension. His starting point was the rock wall where it was stable and less likely to rotate under their feet. The man’s fingers found purchase into the rock’s craggy surface as he pulled his feet up, the gravity no longer holding them down. He fastened his magnetic anchor into a flatten spot using it to anchor him against the rock.

Lucius pressed a button at his waist that tightened the rope. He didn’t want to float away after all before he looked upward, seeing where a large hole blocked their path. His vision shifted toward the tunnel’s center before spotting a floating ‘island’ hovering a few meters away.

The man inhaled then glanced down for Avik. She was already in his wake, her fingers easily found the right niches and pushed herself up higher. Her movements showed she hadn’t allowed herself to become out of shape at this. Pride filled the counselor, showing on the surface as a smile. This drove him onward while he pushed upward. Avik detaching the anchor after so many feet causing it to zip back to his waist. When finally back, he would reattaching it before moving onward. Their movements began to sync up in a unity of past challenges.

At the edge of the wall ending, Lucius paused. His head examined the ‘floating island’ above before spying back down to Avik, his tone filled with hesitation over his options.

“What do you say? Do we try to leap to that floating ‘island’ or attempt the long jump across this chasm?”

–XO, Avik, Lt. Cmdr

Avik secured her anchor to the rock formation. She slowly began to stand upright. Her hand gripped the rope tightly while she felt her waist rope go taut, hoisting her at an angle. Her sharp eyes looked past Lucius toward the gap. Mentally she calculated the distance. Inside she was determining the odds based on what she remembered about the man’s and her own abilities, the odds not in Lucius’ favor without an anchor across it.

An idea surfaced into her mind. She shook her head then spoke.

“I’ll go first. I’ll use the island to jump off of and cover the gap’s distance. Then I will anchor the rope, you can jump across and I can pull, increasing your odds,” Avik explained.

Lucius nodded, his head twisted over his shoulder. He didn’t seem to agree according to the look in his eyes, but that didn’t bother Avik. She inhaled then lowered herself back to the ‘ground’ where she scaled closer to the edge, aligning herself with the island. Her legs pulled underneath her before she shoved herself off. The anchor was detached during the action. Avik twisted mid-flight as she pushed onto the island, her breath escaped on impact. Ignoring the throbbing her landing cause, the XO turned to shove off the rock mass. The island cracked then propelled away while she went forward. Her hands reached out to scratch along the rock’s surface and finally found purchase along the uneven niches. She inserted the anchor firmly into a deep hole.

Her hand raised to gesture for Lucius to begin his ascension next.

The rock which Avik had used to bounce off of. It twisted then shot backward slowly through space. Its surface crashed into the small debris flying around causing Lucius to shield his head, the small pebbles scratched along his flanks. As the rock storm stopped, the counselor lifted his eyes to glance at Avik with a slight frown and ensured his anchor was released. Finally, he pushed softly upward. His figure began to float out into the between space slowly as if it weightless. In fact, it was in this atmosphere.

Avik didn’t react while she gripped the anchor line. Her fingers wrapped tightly and began to pull him toward her, leaving some slack in the lead. Gently Lucius glided over toward her before his toes touched the rocky surface than found purchase.

“That didn’t end as you expected, did it? Little out of practice?” Lucius asked.

He noted she refused to reply as her eyes looked ahead. They both knew she had miscalculated the rock’s trajectory and she was her worst critic over it, causing a subtle concern to wash over him. Carefully he began to back up. His efforts provided enough space for her to gently skim across the surface then resume leading the way. Her gloved hands found small niches and crevices in the rock formations along the way, her arms mainly the controlled pull forward.

More rocks and pebbles dislodged as they made their way upwards.
