Avik held on dearly to that numbness. A cold and soothing balm to her emotions that threatened to stir once more. She suspected that some damage had been done, but it was unavoidable. If she had been human, things might’ve been different. However, emotions were rarely considered a part of the equation for life and duty in the Vulcan world. What had resulted from it couldn’t be undone by wishful thinking. She let a polite moment of silence pass to show Cassidy she had absorbed the statement.
Unfortunately, the recent events had started to pile up and take their toil. The numbness wasn’t as effective as it usually was. Avik swallowed. She pushed her clamoring mind away in favor of a cold logic. Avik needed to stop acknowledging her emotions in this issue. She was a senior officer and her responsibility was to the ship above any single individual. Including herself.

The XO let that fact spur her onward. “Thank you for your insight. I will do my best to keep it in mind and I will try to resolve this soon. Now, is there anything else you require?”

Avik knew that Cassidy’s original priority was most likely complete now.

Abrams shook her head. “No, though I could ask you the same thing? I did come down here to make sure you were alright after all.” It was a clear dismissal, but the image of the distraught XO was still fresh in her mind and she didn’t want to leave unless Avik was actually okay, or fine to deal with it on her own.

“Presently, I am fairly certain I’m better than earlier. I just need a bit of routine and isolation for a few hours after being trapped in the turbolift. Fortunately, the only thing that suffered was my office. An easy task to manage when it comes to fixing it.” Avik stated in a more relaxed tone. She began to rise and drift back to her desk. A PADD was already in her hand before she turned to see if Cassidy accepted her insistence.

They weren’t friends and Cass had no idea how much of what the XO said was in fact true or not. Sometimes people lied to themselves, if not other people. “Well then, I’ll leave you to it,” she said, rising to her feet.

Moving to the door, she paused and looked back at Avik. “You know, the comment about getting to know people, goes both ways and not just for Vora. I think you might be surprised to find opportunities for more connection amongst the crew, if you allow it.” And with that, Cass slipped out the door, leaving the Vulcan to her thoughts.

Avik anchored in place. Her body was half turned and facing the retreating senior officer. When Cassidy paused and said her peace, the indication of overhearing it came with a flicker in the XO’s eyes. She inhaled then closed them briefly until the doors sealed shut. A brief peak through her lids revealed she was alone. All the emotions that had been held back by the thin veil of control surged forward again. A subtle whiteness surfaced in her knuckles as her fingers typed rapidly over the screen and sent an email to the counselor. It was a simple request to reschedule their meeting for sooner than later.

While the request was being processed, a deep breath echoed from her lungs into the air. Avik moved around the desk then settled into the chair. Every ounce of strength drained out and she curled her arms about her head, shutting out the world for the moment.
