“And why should you be?” he asked both rhetorically and supportively. They already had first hand experience with why they should be, and they weren’t going to be dwelling on that detail anymore. He put the PADD on the table, and reached out to hold her hand, his ‘eyes’ meeting hers.

“I’m glad.” Two words that expressed a multitude.

A beaming smile stretched itself across her face, lighting up her eyes. “Me too!” she said, squeezing his hand in return. “I’ve spent so long running away from Tenra, and even when I went back for my rehab when I relapsed, I was terrified constantly. But lately I’ve been wondering more about my planet and my people. All I know is the D and Cortallo. But there’s so much more than that! I feel like I’ve missed out on so much, Johann. But I think I can start to dig and explore Tenra a bit now that I’m doing this memoir thing. Piece by piece I get to be a part of Tenra, if that makes sense?”

“It does,” he said. “You get to maintain your connection to your home planet, and make yourself a permanent part of it. Your way. The way you choose to, rather than the way other people chose for you. You literally are writing the story.”

He made a rather awkward smirk as he thought about that it a bit more. “I know you’re not motivated at all by vengeance, but if you were this would be a pretty fun way to get it.”

She gave him a lopsided smirk. “What, by dropping all kinds of secrets people really don’t to be public?” she said, her eyes gleaming. Vora had considered it but for the most part she was treading a cautious line to keep her anonymity as long as she could. Whether it would stay that way, or whether she’d want it to stay that way later in the process, she wasn’t sure. But for now, caution seem the best way to go and didn’t mean she couldn’t be brutally honest about her experiences.

“Well, yes, but… also more abstractly. There is that saying that ‘living well is the best revenge.’ You’re living well, and you kind of get a chance to brag about that a little in the process. The people who wanted your life to be different lost and you won.” It certainly was both an abstract and reductive way of looking at the situation.

Right after that and right on schedule came the standard defense against being overly-reductive: “Not that you’re bragging, but, you know…”

“Oh, I have it good,” Vora said with a gleam in her eyes. “I mean, I’m clean, I got an excellent education, am doing work I enjoy and have a promising career. I have my son in my life again and I have you and a wonderful future we get to explore together. There’s not much more I can ask for, really.” And she meant that with every fibre of her being. Yes, she was excited to plan a wedding, but she was truly content at the moment and there was only one thing they could do to improve things, but it wasn’t the right time now and they had time yet for that.
